2013 Fantasy Hockey Forecaster, Week 9: Game Picks, Accuracy Data and Sleepers

Week Eight of the 2013-2014 National Hockey League Season is in the books. There were some notable pieces of news last week, but none more important than the charges levied against Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov

Back on October 30th, the 25-year-old goaltender, according to his girlfriend Evgeniya Vavrinyuk, allegedly knocked her down with a kick and stomped on her chest. The arrest affidavit containing that information, also stated that Vavrinyuk accused him of dragging her by her hair and telling her that he “would have beaten her more if they been in Russia”.

The explicit statement made by Varlamov, again we want to emphasize that these are alleged actions,  shows clear malice and could possibly be looked at as an action of moral turpitude.

The question of moral turpitude is important to Semyon’s case, because as you can see for yourself at this link, his third degree misdemeanor assault charge (the kidnapping charge was not levied on him, despite rumors to the contrary) combined with actions of moral turpitude, could be enough to get the Russian goaltender, who is here on a work visa, deported if convicted.

While the immoral and illegal weight that these alleged actions carry, is the keystone reason we are discussing this, the far less important consequences are relevant to those of us who play Fantasy Hockey.

It’s hard to imagination this case getting resolved very quickly because we assume the plea bargain is not an option given the potential deportation consequences that still linger for the Avalanche goalie. Owners of Varlamov need to invest in Jean-Sebastien Giguere as an insurance policy. Ultimately however, we all hope these allegations of heinous behavior are false, because that’s the most important thing at stake here.

It is always difficult to transition from a story like this, into a full-on discussion of Fantasy sports, but we are going to do so, because that’s why you read our content.

We redeemed ourselves picking games last week, going 25-14-7 (seven over-time/shoot-out loss picks). Our current overall record for the season now sits at an impressive 183-95-33. That gives us a point percentage ((wins + (OT/Shootout Losses divided by two)) divided by total games)) of .644. Just for fun, if that were an NHL team, they would be 10th in the league right now.
