Fantasy Baseball Final: April 7, 2015

Welcome to the TheFantasyFix.com’s nightly fantasy baseball recap, where you’ll find updates on bullpen usage, lineup construction, injuries, and transactions. No matter the format, we got you covered with everything you need to know to help you win your league.

We had eight games scheduled for our second day of baseball, though one of them, St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs, was postponed. Though just a day into the season, the Giants are already without two of their top starting pitchers. Jake Peavy was scratched from tonights with what the Giants called “back trouble”, but for now he’s scheduled to make his next start, so hopefully its nothing too serious. As for Matt Cain, he was placed on the 15 Day DL earlier today with a flexor tendon strain in his right elbow. Cain was slated to start Wednesday’s game against the Diamondbacks, but the Giants have recalled starting pitcher Chris Heston from Triple-A to make his start.

IF YOU ONLY READ ONE THING…

The Atlanta Braves exploded for 12 runs Tuesday on the road against the Miami Marlins. Mat Latos, one of the big offseason acquisitions by the Miami Marlins, let up seven runs while only recording two outs. This isn’t the start the Marlins were hoping for from Latos, as they now fall to 0-2 on the season after the eventual 10-2 loss. Latos was sitting about 90-91mph with his fastball, the same speed he was averaging on the pitch last year before he had elbow surgery to remove bone spurs, so that’s something to keep an eye on. After tonights season debut, Latos’ ERA sits at 94.50. As for the Braves, the blowout comes as a surprise to many, since most figured this club would be one of the worst in baseball. Of course, we’re only two games in, but so far the Braves have outscored the Marlins 14-3 in the series.

JUST AS WE EXPECTED…

Alex Wood, one of the few bright spots on the Atlanta Braves, picked up his first win of the season in the blowout over the Miami Marlins. Understandably, the Braves didn’t let Wood go any further than the fifth inning, since they were already up 7-2 and he was already at 85 pitches. Though he picked up the win, Wood struggled a bit with his command as he walked 3 batters. Wood’s next scheduled start should come Monday, April 13th at home against the Marlins.

BUT WE DIDN’T SEE THIS COMING…

Just as they did on Opening Day, the Colorado Rockies were able to score early on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers and hold on to the lead the rest of the way en route to a 5-2 victory. Jordan Lyles picked up the wins for the Rockies, tossing six innings, giving up two runs and striking out two. Rockies’ outfielder Corey Dickerson and third baseman Nolan Arenado both picked up their NL leading 5th RBIs.
Mark Trumbo’s first two hits of the night were triples, and he now leads the major leagues in that category. If you predicted that outcome, please do not hesitate to email me some numbers that I can play in the lottery.

RUMORS & TRANSACTIONS

The Oakland Athletics will sign former Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox outfielder Cody Ross once he officially clears his release waivers. Ross signed a three-year deal with the Diamondbacks prior to the 2013 season after hitting 22 home runs while driving in 81 runs in 2012. Ross never lived up to his contract in Arizona, and his release a few days ago didn’t come as a major shock since his name floated around during trade rumors over the offseason. Center fielder Coco Crisp is going to be out at least two months following his elbow surgery, so Ross looks destined for left field, with Sam Fuld and Craig Gentry likely to platoon in center while Crisp remains sidelined.
