2014 Fantasy Golf Daily Fix: BMW Championship

My run of picking the winner ran out last week and I had some solid picks and a couple of misses. But, we’re back on the horse this week’s edition of The Fantasy Fix’s Daily Fantasy golf column. We head to Cherry Hills Village, Colorado for the BMW Championship.  And DraftKings is back with some top notch contests. Come on over and take a look.

Tour Stop

This week we enter the third week of FedEx playoffs. We are now down to 70 eligible players as we continue to whittle the field down to the final 30 who will compete for the top prize.

The tour heads to Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, CO just south of Denver for the BMW Championship. The course is a 7,466 yards long par 71 course that is a mile above sea level so we could see the Coors Field effect coming into play this week. The course doesn’t play nearly as long as the yardage indicates.

There are 82 bunkers on the course and four official water hazards. There is also a little creek that runs through much of the course. The tiny greens offer a reward if you can get there – they aren’t tough to putt on, so you want to find the greens if you can.

Cherry Hills head pro John Ogden estimates that as few as 10 percent of the field has played Cherry Hills before official practice rounds begin Tuesday morning.” And many who have played here previously have very spotty track records (though Phil Mickelson won here as an amateur in 1990).

Field

The second round of the playoffs limits the field to 70 and all but one are here (Dustin Johnson is still out with his personal issues).

This is a no-cut event. All 69 players will play four rounds.

You can follow the projected FedEx Cup standings here.

Also, thanks to GolfOdds.com for the odds this week.

Past Tournament Results

It doesn’t matter who won what over the last few years for this tourney. They’ve all been at different courses.

DraftKingsExpert Picks

Jason Day | $10,500 – Day has back to back top 10s. He’s fully healthy and in form. He’s certainly worth this price.

Graham DeLaet | $6,600 – Follow me here for a second. DeLaet certainly looks to be out of form. However, he’s tenth in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green. And he’s a terrible putter, but that will be mitigated as these greens won’t be as tough.

Rickie Fowler | $9,200 – A down week for Fowler had him tied for 23 rd. I’ve ridden him this far, no reason to stop now.  His 23 rd place finish was his first spot out of the top 15 since June.

Sergio Garcia | $8,900 – I’ll take a well-rested Sergio any day. He took last week off, but he’s up there in all the right statistical categories. He’s a sneaky play to win the tourney

Bill Haas | $8,300 – Haas doesn’t have a finish lower than 27th over his last four tourneys. He’s been a consistent player all season long.

Rory McIlroy | $12,200 – He’s the best player on the planet. His worst finish on tour this year is a tie for 23 rd at the US Open. If you can squeeze him in, he’ll score for you.

Geoff Ogilvy | $7,200 – Ogilvy closed with back to back 65s last week and looks to be in top form. For this price, he’s worth the risk.

Jordan Speith | $8,400 – Speith played in the US Amateur here in 2012 and finished in a tie for seventh place in the stroke play part of the event. He’s played pretty well over the first two FedEx Cup events with a tie for 29th and tie for 22nd. He would have been better last week, but crashed to a 73 in the final round.

John Senden | $6,800 – Senden tied for fifth last week and 22nd the week before. He’s a steady player who’s priced nicely this week.

Kevin Stadler | $6,400 – Stadler is from the Denver area and has played in altitude before. He’s also gone back to Denver recently to play the course as well. He’s also on a run of cuts made where he hasn’t missed one since early June at the St. Jude. He’s just on the outside looking in to the top 30 and certainly wants to make it to the finals.

Jimmy Walker | $8,100 – Walker is an intriguing player here as he took time out of schedule this summer to play a round here giving him a bit of an advantage over the other players.  He finished tied for ninth last week

If you are looking for a couple of punt plays I’d put Chesson Hadley ($5,300) and Carl Petterson ($5,900) who both finished tied for ninth last week. J.B Holmes ($5,700) is a bomber who can outrun problems and if his putter is on he could be dangerous.

Check out my lineup as it sits right now. I believe this is the last week for DraftKings PGA DFS games and if it is, I’ve enjoyed my time writing here and hopefully you’ve found the analysis useful for your plays.

Scoring Notes: Ties for a finishing position will not reduce or average down points. For example, if 2 golfers tie for 3rd place, each will receive the 18 fantasy points for the 3rd place finish result. Playoff Holes will not count towards final scoring, with the exception of the “finishing position” scoring. For example, the golfer who wins the tournament will receive the sole award of 1st place points, but will not accrue points for their scoring result in the individual playoff holes.

Player Lock Notes: All golfers lock at the time the first golfer tees off on day 1 of an event.
