2014 Fantasy Golf Daily Fix: The Memorial

Welcome back to another exciting week on the PGA Tour. We head to Muirfield Village Golf Club for The Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance. Muirfield Village is Jack Nicklaus’ baby and is located in Dublin, OH – Jack’s hometown. Below you will find my DraftStreet daily fantasy picks for the tournament this week. Come on and join me for a round!

Tour Stop

Jack NicklausMuirfield Village Golf Club is a 7,352 yards, par 72 course that first opened in 1974. Jack Nicklaus named the club for Muirfield in Scotland where he won his first British Open title. This is a difficult course especially over the last couple of years as it’s been one of the toughest outside of the majors.

This week we are looking for premium players who can stay out of trouble and when in trouble can get out either with solid play around the green or out of this world putting. Easy, right?

Also, last year’s Presidents Cup was played at Muirfield so some players got two looks at the course last year. Could that be valuable?

Field

The field improves a bit this week as we get 26 of the top 50 in the Overall World Golf Rankings in the field this year. And it’s top heavy as we have seven of the top ten in OWGR this week.

Injuries

Sergio Garcia is out with a knee injury and hopes to return for the U.S Open in a couple of weeks. Graeme McDowell and Patrick Reed remain out for new children. Jason Day is back in the field (currently), but monitor him. I wouldn’t jump on Day as he’s back after a long layoff for a thumb injury. D.H Lee, Jason Day and Victor Dubuisson all remain out with unclear return dates as does former number one in the world Tiger Woods.  Peter Uihlein also backed out of a U.S Open qualifier and could be out for a bit with a back issue. Graham DeLaet also withdrew late this week. No reason was given.

Let’s look at a few options this week.

DraftStreet Expert Picks

First, I’d fade the two highest price players in Rory McIlroy ($27,759) and Adam Scott ($27,270). They are nearly $5,000 more than the third highest priced player and that’s just not a premium we should need to pay this week. This is a good field and there are plenty of players at all salary levels.

Kevin Chappell | $14,589 – At lot of players will be on Chappell as he finished second here last year, he’s made four straight cuts including a tenth place finish last week and he’s cheap.

Stewart Cink | $11,932 – Cink isn’t the player he once was. And who among us really is anymore? However, he crushes this course as he’s made 16 straight cuts here and he’s made six cuts in a row on tour. You won’t pay a lot, but you’ll get a lot out of Cink.

Jason Dufner | $17,000 – Coming off a tie for second last week, Dufner is one of those guys who played Muirfield last year during the Presidents Cup and went 3-1. He’s picked up four top 10s this year and should be a solid play here even though he hasn’t played The Memorial in a few years and when he has, he’s not had success.

Dustin Johnson | $19,871 – This is all about current form as he’s got two top 15s in his last two starts. He missed the cut last year here so he’s probably not going to be on a lot of rosters.

Matt Kuchar | $23,249 – Sure, he missed the cut last week, but I don’t think that’s the start of a trend. His worst finishe here in his last six appearances? A tie for 13 th. Yea, he’s a must start.

Ryan Moore | $15,004 – He missed the cut last week so we may see some players jump off the ship. Don’t give up yet – he was tied for 13 th last year. He had a solid couple of weeks before missing the cut last week.

Carlos Ortiz | $10,439 – The Mexican star has won twice on the WEB.com tour and gets a start here on an exemption. He’s a long shot, but will allow you to go top heavy in other spots.

Justin Rose | $22,882 – Rose has a win and two eighth place finishes among his last four appearances here. Yes, he did miss the cut here in those four appearances, but he’s in form (three straight top 10s on the PGA tour and can win again.

Charl Schwartzel | $16,100 – My man is back in my good graces as he’s picked up two top 15 finishes in his last three PGA tour stops. He was tied for eighth here last year and was in the top 25 in the two starts prior to last year. He’s the kind of player who won’t blow up on the course. Slow and steady wins the race this week.

Check out my lineup as it sits right now. I still have some flexibility to move guys around if I’d like.
