We are back this week for another look at PGA DFS at DraftKings. Last week’s lineup proved to be solid enough to cash in most 50/50s. I’m here to hopefully move back into the upper echelon of lineups this week. We stay in Hawaii (because who wouldn’t want to stay in Hawaii) and head over the island of Oahu for the Sony Open in Hawaii at the Waialae Country Club.  We are back on a normal Thursday through Sunday schedule for this tournament so get those lineups in by Thursday. It’s a great week to check out DraftKings as they have some top notch contests. Come on over and take a look.

Tour Stop

There will be a cut this week! This week’s tour stop is the Sony Open in Hawaii at the Waialae Country Club. The Waialae Country Club Championship Golf Course measures 7,020 yards and plays at a par 70 for the tour pros. As with last week’s tournament, trade winds can play into the match and the putting surface and fairways are Bermuda grass. A full course tour is available here should you want to dream of warmer climes.  There was a massive renovation in 1999 so any historical data prior to that time is likely useless.

Field

This is the first full field event since the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, but it’s a little light on star power as we have only six of the top 25 and 13 of the top 50 in the Overall World Golf Rankings. The full field can be found here. Also, thanks to GolfOdds.com for the odds this week. As of the time I filed this (late Tuesday night) the odds had yet to be updated for this week.

Past Tournament Results

2014 Winner: Jimmy Walker carded a final round 7-under 63 to win by one stroke over Chris Kirk. Here is the top 20 from last year’s tournament

2014 Sony Open at Hawaii Top 20
2014 Sony Open at Hawaii Top 20

The tournament has been played at the Waialae Country Club since 1965 (with the exception of 1970) so historical data is quite useful this week though a full scale renovation in 1999 means we’ll only look at data since 1999.

DraftKings Expert Picks

Tim Clark | $9,300 – Clark is in form with a solid showing last week, a tie for seventh at the Needbank Challenge and a solo second at the WGC-HSBC Championship.  He’s played here five times and only missed the cut once (last year when he withdrew). He’s got two top 10s and hasn’t ever finished lower than 25th.

John Daly | $3,100 – Hear me out here…or if you don’t want to, just skip down. If you want to go stars & scrubs, Daly is your man this week. He looks to have his life under more control than he has in years.  Daly has played here 11 times and doesn’t have a top 10, but he was tied for 32nd here last year. And he’s been in the top 30 in his last two tourneys.

Harris English | $9,600 – English is not in form, but he seems to find his form whenever he heads to Hawaii. He’s three for three on cuts here and has top 10s in the last two years here. This is a horse for course call as he’s not playing his best golf now.

Tony Finau | $7,400 – Finau is a rookie, but he’s not playing like one. He’s made four of five cuts in his first time on tour and has two top 10s in those four tourneys.  He has no history here, but he’s in form and priced attractively.

Russell Henley | $10,400 – Henley is another relatively expensive player who is quite in form and has a solid history here.  He’s played twice and won in 2013 so he knows what it takes to succeed. He’s also got two top five finishes in three tournaments this year.

Charles Howell III | $9,100 – Howell III has played here 13 times, and he has 8 top 10 finishes including three straight coming into this year. He owns this course (or close to it). He’s almost a must-have in your lineup this week in cash games. He’s going to be highly owned so if you want to fade someone, fade Charlie (though do it at your own peril).

Jerry Kelly | $7,600 – Kelly plays this course about as well as anyone with seven top 10s in this 14 appearances here. He was third here last year, but missed the cut in 2013. He hasn’t missed a cut since The Players Championship back in May 2014.

Chris Kirk | $12,000 – Kirk looked like a dud last week until a final round 62 put him back on the DFS map. He’s expensive, but not Jason Day ($16,000), so you can fit him into your lineup without completely scrimping elsewhere.  He’s made the cut all four times he’s teed it up here and has back to back top 10 finishes here.

Marc Leishman | $9,000 – The Aussie is familiar with windy courses and Hawaii offers those gentle trade winds that can wreak havoc with your game. Leishman has performed quite well here with two top 10s in his five appearances here and nothing lower than a tie for 27th in those five tourneys. He’s not missed a cut here and is a safe play outside the top tier of golfers.

Kevin Na | $8,800 – Na is a bit schizophrenic as a golfer. He misses a cut one week and then backs that up with a top five finish. Na seems to be in solid form with four cuts made and a withdrawal in this early season.  His last four starts here are: tie for 20th, cut, cut, tie for eighth. So, yea, let’s see where this goes.

Jeff Overton | $6,600 – Overton’s place on the list is all about a horse for a course. He’s got back to back top 10s here (his only two in his eight appearances here). He’s made four of five cuts this season, but hasn’t finished better than 29th in any of those tournaments.

Pat Perez | $6,000 – Perez has four top ten finishes in this 13 appearances at Waialae. And two of those top 10s are in the last two years. He’s a horse for this course.

Robert Streb | $8,400 – Streb continues to be one of the hottest golfers on the planet and continues to be priced not like one of the hottest golfers on the planet. This pick is all about form with Streb. He looked good last week at the Hyundai and continues to lead the tour in FedEx points.

Brian Stuard | $6,800 – Stuard has played here three times finishing in the top ten twice. Those two top ten finishes? 2012 and 2013. He’s not in great form, but this course suits him much like it does Perez.

Brendon Todd | $9,600 – I might rather go with Todd than the similarly priced Harris English. He’s been in the top 20 here in his last two appearances (2014 and 2012).  And he’s in form with a tie for eighth last week and a tie for 12th in the tournament prior.

Good luck this week! Head over to DraftKings to choose your squad for this week.

Scoring Notes: Ties for a finishing position will not reduce or average down points. For example, if 2 golfers tie for 3rd place, each will receive the 18 fantasy points for the 3rd place finish result. Playoff Holes will not count towards final scoring, with the exception of the “finishing position” scoring. For example, the golfer who wins the tournament will receive the sole award of 1st place points, but will not accrue points for their scoring result in the individual playoff holes. Player Lock Notes: All golfers lock at the time the first golfer tees off on day 1 of an event. Full rules are located here for DraftKings golf.
