2013 Fantasy Baseball, Week 13 PCL Update

PCL

Remember the days when you didn’t have to dive into BABIP, ISO and K% to evaluate talent. Well, if you don’t, there was a day not too long ago when looking at batting average, HRs, and RBI in a section of the sports page (in a thing called a newspaper) is where you went to find the talent. Feeling nostalgic? Well, here’s some of the PCL’s League Leaders, mixed with some new school numbers and fantasy thoughts.

Batting Average .386 – OF, Corey Dickerson: Dickerson actually made his MLB debut Saturday going 2 for 4 against the Nationals. In addition to his PCL leading average, Dickerson was slugging .646 (also PCL leading), with nine home runs, 19 doubles, 13 triples and 38 RBI. If you exclude Dickerson because he is now in the majors, D-Backs shortstop, Chris Owings, is next in line with a .360 batting average.

Fantasy Impact: Dickerson could see extending playing time in Colorado with OF Dexter Fowler dealing with a finger injury. Of course his minor league numbers were inflated playing in Colorado Springs, plus he only had a walk % of 7.6 and a high BABIP of .430. Regardless, the Rockies play seven of their next ten games in Coors Field, which will ease him into major league life. Dickerson is definitely worth a flier in NL Only leagues and could have short term value in deeper mixed leagues.

Home Runs 16  -1B, Kila Ka’aihue: If the name Ka’aihue looks familiar, you’re not mistaken. He spent seven years in the Royals organization, hitting only 11 major league home runs in 283 at bats (1 HR for every 26 ABs). After being traded to Oakland last season, he spent time between AAA and the majors hitting 19 home runs. On Saturday, Ka’aihue lost his league lead to Memphis Redbird 1B, Brock Peterson who, in 11 seasons, has never played above AAA.

Fantasy Impact: Ka’aihue was released by the Diamondbacks on June 2nd making it hard for him to have any fantasy value any time soon. While Peterson has a plethora of talent ahead of him in St. Louis, making it hard to crack the Cardinals lineup.

Runs Batted In 56 – 2B, Wilmer Flores: Flores was the sixth ranked prospect to start the season according to Baseball America. Through 71 games now, he has a .309/.349/.504 triple slash, with 8 home runs and a K:BB of just about 2:1. He spent his first four professional seasons as a shortstop but has moved off the position since, playing 59 games at second base in 2013. Fresno Grizzlies first baseman, Brett Pill, also has 56 RBI in spite of having 27 major league at bats this season.

Fantasy Impact: The Mets aren’t going anywhere in 2013 but haven’t been decisive on where to play Daniel Murphy. If Murphy does move to first base full time, Flores should get his shot before too long. In ESPN leagues, Flores is only SS eligible currently but that might be helpful at a position of such scarcity in NL Only leagues.
