Fantasy Baseball Final: September 15, 2015

Welcome to the TheFantasyFix.com’s nightly fantasy baseball recap, where you’ll find updates on bullpen usage, lineup construction, injuries, and transactions. No matter the format, we got you covered with everything you need to know to help you win your league.

What’s not mentioned below: Andrelton Simmons hit a walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning to lift the Atlanta Braves over the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-2. Justin Smoak hit a game-tying two run home run in the sixth inning for the Jays, his 16th of the season. Jake Odorizzi picked up his eighth win of the season tonight against the New York Yankees, tossing six innings of three run ball, walking three and striking out five. All three of his earned runs came via the home run; a solo shot from Alex Rodriguez, and a two run home run off the bat of rookie Greg Bird. Jacoby Ellsbury went hitless once again for the Yanks, bringing his hitless streak to 0-21 while dragging his average all the way down to .251. Kris Medlen picked up his fourth win of the season for the Kansas City Royals tonight, tossing 6.1 shutout innings against the Cleveland Indians in the 2-0 victory. Medlen brought his ERA down to 3.92 on the year with the strong start, though the right-hander failed to record a strikeout in the start. As a write this, the Oakland A’s are beating the Chicago White Sox down by a score 17-6. Jeff Samardzija let up ten runs on eleven hits in three innings, bringing the upcoming free-agent’s ERA to 5.27 on the year. Josh Reddick and Marcus Semien have both went deep for the A’s.

IF YOU ONLY READ ONE THING…

Who had Jacob deGrom getting lit up like a Christmas tree tonight against the Miami Marlins? Anyone? Bueller..? Bueller…? The Mets’ ace went five innings, letting up six runs on ten hits, striking out five. If you paid the hefty price for deGrom tonight in DFS, well, you paid the price (I’m not funny)! deGrom fell to 13-8 on the season, though he still owns a more than respectable 2.64 on the season, with 189 strikeouts in 181 innings. Second baseman Dee Gordon led the offense for Miami, going 4-5 with two runs and two RBI, including his third home run of the season. First baseman Justin Bour went 3-5 hitting in the cleanup spot tonight, driving in two runs and scoring a run. Tom Koehler held the Mets’ offense at bay tonight, tossing six innings, allowing just one run and striking out four batters to pick up his 10th win of the season. Yoenis Cespedes went 0-4 in the game, which is somewhat of a shock since the outfielder has been on an absolute tear since being traded to the Mets at the deadline.

JUST AS WE EXPECTED…

Stephen Strasburg was absolutely brilliant on the mound tonight for the Washington Nationals, tossing eight scoreless innings to help lead the team to a 4-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Strasburg struck out a season-high 14 batters in the win, while allowing just one hit and issuing one walk. Strasburg has now put together two straight outstanding starts for the Nats, with his last start coming against the New York Mets in which he struck out 13 hitters in 7.1 innings. If there is a silver lining to the Nats collapse this season, it could be that Strasburg is finally fully healthy and pitching like the pitcher they expected to have the entire season; of course now it seems a little late for that. Ready for this? Phillies batters swung and missed on 30 of their 55 swings against Strasburg in the game (54.5%), the highest swing and miss percentage in a game by any starting pitcher in the past ten season (via ESPN stats & info). Wow. An easy pick for the World Series, the Nationals now sit nine games back of both the NL East lead and the NL Wild Card. It’s such a shame, too, that this is all happening for this squad; talk about a team with an abundance of talent coming into the season. All-star outfielder Bryce Harper went 3-3 in the game with four RBI, including two home runs to bring his total on the season to an NL leading 39 home runs. Harper should be on his way to his first career NL MVP, though nothing is set in stone yet, of course…. Not if Zack Greinke has anything to say about it! Harper now has the 39 home runs to go along with 90 RBI and a .338/.467/.667 slash line.

BUT WE DIDN’T SEE THIS COMING…

JON LESTER PICKED OFF A RUNNER!!! Usually I wouldn’t put Jon Lester throwing a complete game under something that we “didn’t see coming”, but holy crap, Jon Lester picked off his first runner since 2011, ending a truly remarkable and extremely funny streak of failed pickoff attempts. The Chicago Cubs needed Lester to be nothing short of spectacular tonight in Pittsburgh, and he was just that. Facing the division rivals and NL Wild Card leading Pittsburgh Pirates, Lester spun his first complete game of the season, letting up just one run and striking out nine batters. Lester was nearly untouchable in this game, giving up just five hits across the nine innings of work, while walking one batter and needing 111 pitches (71 strikes) to get the 27 outs. The game was part two of the day/night doubleheader between the two teams, with the Chicago Cubs capturing both games to move within four of the Pirates in the wild card standings. J.A. Happ was Lester’s opposition on the mound this evening, and he himself had a solid outing. Happ went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, to go along with eight strikeouts. Not too shabby for the journeyman left-hander, huh? Pirates’ superstar Andrew McCutchen went 3-8 combined in the two games, driving in a run while scoring a run.
