The Rubber: Top 75 SP Rest-of-Season Rankings

Max Scherzer

I present to you my top 75 starting pitcher rankings for the remainder of 2013. I’d trade anyone for any player listed above them.  I present them without comment as we go along because I’m balls deep in football material trying to get our Football Draft Guide ready to launch. Check that out; it’s coming very, very soon. But next week I’ll follow up on the piece and discuss some specific names.

If you have any comment on the rankings or if you disagree, I’d love to be distracted from work today and discuss things with you in the comment section below. Enjoy!

What are your thoughts on Iwakuma ROW?

Still like him quite a bit. Think his struggles lately have just been the result mainly of a run of bad homer luck. His control has remained excellent, and though his K% has dipped as we’ve gone along this year, his velocity is actually up recently. So I think he’ll be just fine.

I’m curious why Parker dropped 10 spots from your rankings in early June considering he’s pitched so much better over the past couple of months. Concerns? Thanks!

I was a big Parker fan in the preseason, and I liked what he showed in May, so that’s why I had him higher in my early June ranks. But I don’t like what he’s done since then. I know the surface numbers look good, but his strikeout rate has been well below average, and he’s had all the recent success because of a .175 BABIP since June. That won’t keep up. And if his skills don’t rebound before the luck runs out, he’s got some rough starts ahead of him.

Travis Woods keeps being ranked fairly low by every expert. He has a 2.79 ERA and 1.04 WHIP half way through the season, What am I missing? Should I try and make a trade for the likes of Kluber or Gee?

Wood has the highest xFIP and highest SIERA out of that trio. He has the worst strikeout rate, he has the worst walk rate. In other words, he’s shown the lowest level of skill but has produced the best results. The reason is that he’s been very lucky. He has a .227 BABIP, which is the lowest mark in the league and completely unsustainable. He also has a 5.8% HR/FB ratio which is very low for any pitcher, but especially low for one who has bad strikeout and walk skills and who plays in a homer friendly home park. He’s also an extreme fly ball pitcher. He has the 5th highest fly ball rate among pitchers. so when that home run luck turns, it’s going to hit him especially hard.

Back end of tier 3 or top end of tier 4

Surprised to see that Clay Buchholz was done for the year, since 13-1 apparently wasn’t good enough to make the top 75 for the second half
