2011 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Reyes to DL, Jeter 2 Hits Away From Milestone & More

This article is dedicated to Shannon Stone, who in a freak accident lost his life at the Rangers game yesterday.

The Mets placed Jose Reyes on the 15-day DL. This is a huge loss to owners, as Reyes was playing at a MVP caliber. No one off the waiver wire will fill the huge shoes and with SS being so thin, it’s probably not worth trading for anyone either. Possible pickups that will tide you over: Emilio Bonifacio, Darwin Barney, Alcides Escobar, Brandon Crawford, or Chase d’Arnaud.

The Yankees may have lost to the Rays and fallen behind the Sox by half a game but the city is still buzzing, knowing that Derek Jeter is now 2 hits away from 3,000. Internet casinos and sports gambling sites are probably taking big bets if the Jeter will hit the milestone tonight.

Jason Heyward’s season which started with so much promise has just been plain ugly. Injuries only seem to be part of the problem, but nonetheless J-Hey went yard last night, hopefully giving us a glimpse into the 2nd half of play. Freddie Freeman also sent one sailing, his 4th homer in the last 4 games. Craig Kimbrel notched his league best 27th save in the 6-3 win over Colorado.

Carlos Pena's .225 average is nothing to brag about, but at least he keeps hitting them out of the park. Of his 62 hits, 19 are home runs.

Jose Bautista continues to light up the month of July, hitting his 29th of the year and 5th in the last 7 games.

The Red Sox cruised past the O’s 10-4 giving rookie Andrew Miller his 3rd win. Six Sox hit home runs, including the red-hot Josh Reddick’s 2nd of the year.

Derek Holland 4-hit Oakland on route to a complete game shut-out.

Rickie Weeks hit his 16th home run of the year and trying to prove that he is worthy of playing in the home run derby.

After playing each other 2 weeks in a row, I’m sure Clayton Kershaw and Jered Weaver enjoyed beating up on other teams. Kershaw held the Mets scoreless through 8 and striking out 9 (T-1st with 138). Weaver pitched his 5th complete game of the season, holding Seattle to 1 run and struckout 6. He leads the AL with a 1.86 ERA and is tied for 2nd in WHIP at 0.91.

Barry Zito won his 3rd game in a row since coming off the DL is worth a look in at least NL-leagues.

Scott Baker has a mild flexor muscle strain and will miss his next start and then be re-evaluated.

Some great pitching matchups to watch today are Brandon Beachy @Roy Halladay, Zach Britton @Josh Beckett, Mike Leake @Zack Greinke, Mat Latos @Chad Billingsley and Gio Gonzalez @CJ Wilson. Also hurling today is Jeremy Hellickson, Ian Kennedy, Blake Beavan, Ryan Vogelsong.
