2011 Fantasy Baseball Young Guns: Kyle Drabek Dazzles In First MLB Victory

Picture

Kyle Drabek

Former first round draft pick, Kyle Drabek of the Toronto Blue Jays, earned his first Major League victory today in a seven inning, one-hit effort against the Minnesota Twins. The twenty-three year old Drabek took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before surrendering the only hit of the day, a single, to Denard Span

The lone run earned against Kyle was manufactured in the fourth inning. Tsuyoshi Nishioka drew a walk,  then proceeded to steal second base. Joe Mauer advanced Nishioka to third on ground out to second base. Nishioka then scored when Justin Morneau grounded out to second base.

Although Drabek issued three walks, he remained efficient by keeping his pitch count under twenty in each of his seven innings on the mound. Notably, Kyle only needed six pitches to retire the Twins in the second inning.

In all, Drabek threw 100 pitches, 53 of which fell for strikes at the Rogers Centre on Saturday. Brooks Baseball tells us Drabek's favorite pitch was his two-seam fastball, which he threw more than 50 percent of the time and peaked at about 95 mph.

The Blue Jays defeated the Minnesota Twins, 6-1.

The Line: Kyle Drabek (1-0), 7.0 IP, H, ER, 3 BB, 7 K

Other Notes:

The Minnesota Twins’ dynamic duo of Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau were a combined 0/4, with two walks, one strikeout and one RBI against Kyle Drabek.

Both Kyle, and his father Doug Drabek, earned their first career victories versus the Minnesota Twins.

Drabek, the MLB legacy, with make his second start of 2011 on Saturday, 4/8, against Joel Pinero and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Fantasy Spin:

Drabek should already be owned in your AL Only and Dynasty leagues, however, go out and grab him with confidence in your deep mixed-leagues to serve as the fifth or sixth starter on your staff. Expect Drabek to post about seven K/9, an ERA that will hover around 4.00 and a 1.30 WHIP.

Kyle Drabek is currently owned in 25% of Y! and 10% of ESPN leagues.
