2012 Fantasy Baseball Draft Day Must Have: Tampa Bay Rays’ Desmond Jennings

Desmond Jennings is one of my MUST have players this year as we enter the 2012 draft season. Jennings has all the makings of a five category star for years to come. The best part is that he isn't a house hold name yet as we're seeing him being taken in this year's drafts around the 85th spot and the 20-25th OF off the boards. I will take him in the eighth round in 10 team leagues any day.

It took awhile for him to be called up last year after a nasty wrist injury slowed him down. Once he was called he managed a .333 BA with eight HR's and 14 steals in just five weeks of play. A late season 3 for 40 slump caused his BA to drop to .259 for the year although he did end with 10 HR's and 20 steals in just 63 games. Projecting a year worth of Desmond gives you a 28 HR, 49 SB, 70 RBI, 120 run player with an expected increase in batting to about .275. The only possible hangup on Jennings is that he has not had a big track record of power numbers in the minors averaging about 12.4 a year.

Jennings projects to lead off and play left field for manager Joe Maddon and will be there for years to come.
