2012 Fantasy Football, Quick Hitters: Getting To Know Brian Quick

Brian Quick | Wide Receiver | St. Louis Rams

Maybe it’s just my conservative nature, but rookie wide-receivers, unless they are top quality talents like A.J. Green or Julio Jones, don’t always have a quick transition into the NFL.

Brian Quick is no exception to that theory; coming out of Division 1-AA Appalachian State, Quick will need to focus hard on learning the playbook (which is something rookie WR’s tend to struggle with). Quick has incredible size, quickness, and good route running ability, all of those tools will help him make up for the lack of experience that he has.

From a fantasy perspective, I like Brian Quick as a late speculative pick, but as a heavy PPR (point-per-reception) player, I know there are better, sneakier options on that team. Quick should be much better in the second half of the season than the first half, because I expect him to get off to a slow start. Keep in mind as well, that Jeff Fisher has shown impatience with young players in the past – Vince Young in Tennessee.

Getting back to the better options on that team, they are: Danny Amendola, and Brandon Gibson. Quite honestly, I don’t think there’s been a wide receiver that I’ve been more in love with –skills wise, (comparative to other fantasy owners) the past couple years than Danny Amendola. Amendola missed basically the entire 2011 season with an elbow injury, and has shown injury problems can be a bit of a concern for him throughout his young career. To put things in perspective, Amendola had 85 receptions in 2010 despite only starting 6 games. He tallied 686 yards but only 3 touchdowns. However, the touchdowns were not due to a lack of targets. He tallied double digit red zone targets, he just got unlucky.

Quick, Amendola, and Gibson will all be fighting for their share of playing time and attention as major parts in the Rams’ offense. My advice is in standard leagues to let Amendola and Gibson slip to the waiver wire and to draft Quick first; but that’s only due to perception of value by other Fantasy players. I expect Gibson to emerge as the best option, and Amendola to emerge as the best PPR option. Quick could explode in the second half, but he has a lot to learn. Quick’s ADP is 150, which is ahead of Santana Moss, which is quite frankly, preposterous. Take the proven WR’s first and gamble on Quick in the last round before you take your defense and kicker.
