2012 Fantasy Football, Week 16 Free Agent Fix: Vick Ballard Solid Championship Play

Picture

Vick Ballard

Maybe your starter is banged up.  Maybe they have a bad matchup.  Whatever the case, you’re looking for a quick Fix, and we’ve got you covered.  Every week, we’ll scan the matchups and provide you with two or three favorable options that are available in the majority of Fantasy Leagues.  This week, the Free Agent Fix looks to the Chiefs vs. Colts matchup in Kansas City to uncover two big opportunities for fantasy paydirt.

Vick Ballard, RB, Indianapolis Colts

Vick Ballard seems to be coming alive at just the right time for owners in need of a running back for their season finale.  Last week, Ballard racked up 105 yards on the ground against a Houston defense that hadn’t allowed a 100-yard rusher since Week 4.  After putting up 199 yards on 37 carries in his last two games, the rookie out of Mississippi State looks like a solid play in Week 16 against the lowly Chiefs.

Kansas City ranks 27th in rushing yards allowed (136.4 YPG) and is giving up a whopping 4.6 yards per carry.  We can certainly understand if you’re hesitant to turn to a guy with such a flimsy track record in your biggest game of the year, but all signs point to Ballard feasting on the Chiefs Sunday afternoon.  If you’re in the unenviable position of having to find your RB2 on the waiver wire this week, look no further.  As of Wednesday afternoon, Ballard is still available in 48% of Yahoo leagues.

Indianapolis Colts Defense/Special Teams

We owe our readers on apology for recommending Detroit’s defense last week against the Cardinals.  Those who went into their semifinal matchup with the Lions in their starting lineup – this author included – were left in rough shape.  But in the holiday spirit, we’re giving you something even better than an apology: a DEF/ST play that could tip the scales in your favor as you chase fantasy football glory.

Indianapolis has a tantalizing matchup this week against a Chiefs team that’s scored a grand total of seven points in their last two games – against the Browns and Raiders, mind you.  The Colts still haven’t locked up a playoff berth, and you can bet they’ll go all out to avoid putting themselves in a must-win situation when they face the Texans again in Week 17.

Jamaal Charles can be a handful, but we think Indianapolis, who needs the game, will be up for the challenge.  If they can take an early lead and force the Chiefs to go to the air, the Colts’ defense (15% owned in Yahoo leagues) will be in great shape to pile up the sacks and hopefully, a few turnovers as well.  Start them with confidence.

Good luck, and happy holidays!
