2013 Fantasy Football, Week 6 Gold Mine: Dalton, Jacobs, Cotchery

So you’re telling me 506 yards passing and 5 touchdown passes doesn’t equate to a win? If it weren’t for the fact that I saw the game live I wouldn’t believe you if you told me. But in the fantasy world, the idea of having a player or two go off for you in one week doesn’t always equal a win.

Just this past week, I scored 181.5 points. I lost my week to a team that scored 185.6 points. The third highest scoring team in the league had 132 points. Those weeks will come and believe me they will, just remember that it’s not going to happen every week and you can be fairly certain if you’re scoring that much you’re doing the right thing, just keep your head straight and move forward.

With that said, if you aren’t scoring that much you might want to rethink a few things. The season isn’t over not by a long shot, but if you aren’t at the top of your league it’s going to be n up hill climb to right the ship.

Below check out the under 25% owned players who could make a big impact for your team. [am4show have=’p9;p4;p3;p7;’ guest_error=’Front Office’ user_error=’Front Office’ ]

Quarterbacks:

Andy Dalton (CIN): Dalton (24.4%) has slowly seen his percentage of ownership drop over the last few weeks. With QBs out there averaging 25 – 30 points per week Dalton is only averaging 13.4 points. The last two weeks of the season haven’t been so good for him, or even for the Bengals offense that has seen less than 20 points scored. To kick off the season Dalton had at least 280 yards or 2 TDs in two of the first three games, equating to an average of 18 points per game. Dalton isn’t going to blow up like Peyton Manning (DEN) or Drew Brees (NO) but he is a viable option in 12 – 16 team leagues and as a bye week filler. This week Dalton goes up against the 17th best defense to opposing QBs. The Bills have given up at least 15 points in each week thus far with 2 passing TDs in 4 of the first 5 weeks. AJ Green owners really need Dalton to turn it around, look for him to do it this week.

Chad Henne (JAX): Henne (0.6%) had his best year in 2010 as the QB of the Dolphins, a year in which he threw more INTs than he did TDs and only amassed 3,300 yards. Henne’s situation is worse now that it was in 2010 team wise, but match up wise it’s looking pretty good. Henne’s week 6 opponent Denver Broncos are currently favored by nearly 28 points according to Vegas but are the 25th ranked defense against opposing QBs, including a 500 yard 5 TD performance in week 5. Now obviously Henne is not Tony Romo (DAL) but with Justin Blackmon (JAX) running routes and undoubtedly the Jags playing from behind before the game even starts Henne is going to need to throw the ball a lot. Look for a decent amount of garbage time points.

Running Backs:

Andre Ellington (ARI): Ellington (6.7%) is the 4th RB on the Arizona Cardinals depth chart. But in each and every week he seems to get chance after chance. Ellington took his most carries of the season on Sunday with 7 gaining 52 yards but where his fantasy value goes up is in the passing game. Ellington has at least 2 receptions in each of the last 4 games with 4 receptions in week 5. Not only is he getting catches but also turning them into yards with at least 31 yards in 3 of the last 4 weeks. Ellington is not going to light up the score board but he is getting his chances and against the 21st ranked defense against opposing HBs Ellington has a solid match up to be considered as a FLEX option in deeper leagues.

Brandon Jacobs (NYG): Jacobs (1.8%) has been less than stellar since his return to NY. A fumble last week did not go over too well, and his playing time is still completely up in the air because of it. However, in a dismal offense and with David Wilson (NYG) on the shelf due to injury Jacobs is going to get the majority of the carries. If the Giants defense can hold the Bears offensive attack down a little bit it will give Jacobs more opportunities. Of the HB with less than 25% ownership Jacobs seems to be the only one capable of double-digit carries. The Bears are ranked 21st against opposing RBs this season.

Wide Receivers:

Ted Ginn (CAR): Ginn (7.2%) has never been known as a fantasy stud or even an average fantasy player so far in his tenure, specifically in leagues where kick returns are not recorded at the individual level. But Ginn so far has been surprising a few, with an average of 11.3 points per week through the first 5. Ginn has had at least 3 catches and 62 yards in the last three games scoring in 2 of the 3. He is becoming more and more involved into the Panther offense and should start seeing more fantasy playing time. Although he only has 5 returns on the year he is known for his return yardage with at least 320 yards in each of the last three seasons and if he can get more opportunities for the Panthers he will pack even more of a punch. Ginn faces the 26th ranked defense against opposing WR in week 6.

Jericho Cotchery (PIT): Cotchery (2.8%) has been fairly surprising through the first 5 weeks. With 12.5 points per game, Cotchery has been a shining light on what has been a pretty dismal season for the Steelers. Jericho has at least 3 grabs in each of the first 4 played games with a TD in two of them including a 5 catch 103 yard 1 score performance in their week 4 matchup vs. Minnesota. Cotchery faces the 18th ranked New York Jet defense vs. opposing WR this week and should get a few good looks against his old running mates.

Tight End:

Fred Davis (WSH): 5 years removed from his 6 TD season, Davis (13.3%) is listed as probable going up against the Dallas Cowboys who have given up the most fantasy points to opposing TEs so far this year. Jordan Reed (WSH) is still the key guy out of the TE position but a healthy Davis is a good thing. Davis hasn’t been able to put anything together so far this year and an injury has sidelined him as well but there is no questioning his talent and if he can get an opportunity, there will be no time like week 6 to break out.

Jeff Cumberland (NYJ): Cumberland (1.1%) had his coming out party in week 5, Monday Night vs. Atlanta compiling 16 fantasy points in PPR leagues. Cumberland is the #2 TE on the Jets depth chart but he shows youth and exuberance that older Kellen Winslow (NYJ) just does not. With Winslow’s injury concerns looming every time he steps on the field it will be Cumberland who is inserted immediately if all else fails. His match up in week 6 isn’t the best facing a 4th ranked Steelers defense against opposing TEs but he has scored in two consecutive weeks and Geno Smith (NYJ) is looking for him more and more, which is always a good thing.

Although we are only entering the 6th week of the season, your chances of making a comeback are dwindling and you need to make the right moves each week form here on out to provide yourself with the best chance to turn it around. My choices won’t give you all the answers but they will certainly help.
