2014 Fantasy Football Daily Fix: Week 3 Wide Receivers

Daily Fantasy Baseball Fix

Welcome to Wide Receiver Wednesday at the Daily Fix! Each Wednesday of the NFL regular season I’ll provide you with several receiving options that are strong plays that week at DraftKings. Monday through Friday the Fix writers will provide you with a Daily Fix that covers each position, with a weekly roundup on Friday.

Not into the ‘Daily‘ thing yet? Let’s talk. It’s a ton of fun, you get to start new each week and pick your squad, and DraftKings has a great promo going right now where they’ll match your initial deposit up to $600. Do it. Oh, and you get a free year’s subscription to our premium content as well in the #FrontOffice.

The Wide Receiver position is loaded with options in this new, ever-prolific passing era of the NFL, so options abound. I’ll break it up into tiers, essentially, WR1’s, 2’s, 3’s and FLEX/deep options.

Your WR1 and WR2’s are no-brainer starts in your normal fantasy leagues. I’ll highlight them if they have an exceptional matchup or price. We’re likely going to find some inexpensive plays here week in a week out as well, due to the depth at the position. Scoring and other settings can be found here.

WR1

Brandon Marshall – CHI @ NYJ ($8,300)

Marshall is special. I don’t know what else to say about him after his gutty effort on Sunday night in San Francisco. It appears that B-Marsh came out of the game unscathed, so it’s safe to assume his ankle should be fine on Monday night against the Jets. A Jets team that just got lit up by Jordy Nelson and company in Green Bay, no less. Alshon Jeffery is likely to play again as well but was clearly not 100%, so we can expect Smokin’ Jay Cutler to lean on Marshall once again.

Demaryius Thomas – DEN @ SEA ($6,600)

Yes, I know this game is in Seattle. Howdoes  this sound; 13 receptions, 118 yards, 1 TD. That was Thomas’ line the last time these two teams met, obviously, in the Super Bowl. Thomas will line up all over the field, negating any negative effect on his production due to Richard Sherman’s presence. As expected, Thomas continues to see an uptick in red-zone targets without Eric Decker in town, and I think that continues on Sunday. This is an $8,500 wide receiver, regardless of his opponent.

WR2

Julian Edelman – OAK @ NE ($6,000)

I don’t love the ‘look at me’ nature of the fantasy football writer/pundit, but it’s tough to avoid saying ‘hey look at me’ when you get one right. You rarely see the other side of that coin. Well, here’s one for me. I missed on Julian Edelman. I own zero Edelman shares this year because I thought he was a product of the system and its duct-taped components last season. I thought that a healthy Gronkowski and Amendola, paired with the development of Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins would slide Edelman into WR4 zone again and thus falling short of his draft position in fantasy leagues. Nope. He’s consistent and due for another strong season being likely to approach 90+ receptions again this season. Home against Oakland? Sign me up.

Mike Wallace – KC @ MIA ($5,800)

I think we’re seeing a new Wallace this season. Clearly Ryan Tannehill’s first read on most pass plays, Wallace appears headed for a more consistent week-in-week-out line for both the Dolphins and his fantasy owners. The big play ability remains, and he’s facing a Chiefs defense that’s a shell of the unit they rolled out last season. Start Wallace with confidence, and invest in him this weekend.

WR3

Brian Quick – DAL @ STL ($5,300)

It had to be someone, right? The Rams needed someone to step up and make the leap if they have any shot to compete this season. That guy is Quick. There’s no shortage of names in St. Louis, but Quick has quickly (sorry) established that he’s it, coming off of back to back seven reception outings. His targets (18) through the first two games exceed the number of targets by all the other Rams receivers (14) combined. Still not sold? He gets the Cowboys this week.

Kelvin Benjamin – PIT @ CAR ($4,800)

I really like this price for Benjamin given the likelihood of 8+ targets and more than likely a red-zone look or two. After missing Week 1, Cam Newton was back on Sunday against Detroit and these two weren’t able to find their grove. A very inefficient day resulted in just two receptions for Benjamin, on eight targets, thanks in large part to some key drops by the young rookie. After getting called out by his coach this week for his lack of concentration, look for Benjamin to step up and come down with one in the end zone.

Steve Smith – BAL @ CLE ($4,500)

I can’t miss you if you won’t leave. Steve Smith won’t leave, and I think I’m ok with it. He looks completely rejuvenated so far in Baltimore, while he and Joe Flacco seem to be seamlessly on the same page. Steve’s teammate/brother from another mother, Torrey Smith looked to be the guy this season, and I’m not sold yet that he won’t be, but I expect Torrey will draw Browns CB Joe Haden most of the day, freeing Steve to feast on the rest of the Browns secondary.

FLEX

Greg Jennings – MIN @ NO ($4,200)

Here’s another example of loving the price more than I like the player. In daily games at DraftKings though, cost is King. This smells like a garbage time clean up here for Jennings, and I like his chances of leading the Vikings wide receivers in targets and catches yet again this week. (Not feeling the Corderrelle Patterson thing, sorry).  The Saints defense has been a major disappointment to date as well.

Justin Hunter – TEN @ CIN ($3,600)

Justin Hunter was supposed to be the bell of the ball last week, except he overslept and never showed up.  Hunter is a nice bargain play in tournament-style games due to his big play ability. He’s very capable of only catching three balls, yet topping 100 yards and a score. He’s a perfect lottery ticket for this week, but I’d stay away if you play 50/50’s because he’s so boom or bust.
