2014 Fantasy Football: Top Ten Quarterbacks

1. Peyton Manning

Last season Manning threw for 5,477 yards, 55 TDs and just 10 interceptions. Need I say more? He also just happens to have the No. 2 ranked fantasy WR (ADP 8.4) Demaryius Thomas and the No. 3 ranked TE (ADP 28.97) Julius Thomas. They are complimented by one of the most productive slot receivers of all time, Wes Welker. Welker has averaged over 106 receptions per year over the past seven seasons. They also added Emmanuel Sanders who caught 67 passes for 740 yards and six TDs last season in Pittsburgh. Montee Ball will force defenses to respect the rushing attack and catch passes out of the backfield. Manning is pretty much a no brainer.

2. Drew Brees

Brees has thrown for over 5,000 yards in three straight seasons. Throughout this stretch he has also averaged more than 42 TDs and 659 attempts per season (67.6 CMP%). The Saints drafted WR Brandin Cooks to fill Darren Sproles’ role. Cooks caught 128 passes last season at Oregon State. Brees also has the luxury of having the best TE in the game, Jimmy Graham. Last season Graham would have ranked as the number four receiver ahead of AJ Green and just behind Calvin Johnson. He is a nightmarish matchup for defenses. Brees also has his old reliable target Marques Colston. Since 2006, Colson has caught at least 70 passes every season with the exception of 2008, in which he only played 11 games because of injury. Brees throws the ball early and often. He is great at spreading the ball around and is extremely efficient.

3. Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers is arguably the most talented QB in the NFL. He has dealt with injury issues in the past, including being forced to miss seven games last season. The scary thing about Rodgers is that he is yet to meet his full potential. He has only thrown for 40 TDs once in his career and has never thrown for 4,700 yards. He has the ability to crush these numbers. He may very well do so this season. He is expected to have a healthy Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson this season. They are a nice inside, outside 1-2 punch. Eddie Lacy also commands respect between the tackles and should take pressure off the passing attack. A lot of the Packers offense is relying on health and potential, however, if everything falls in to place, Rodgers could easily end the season as the top fantasy QB.

4. Matthew Stafford

Over the past three seasons Stafford has thrown the ball 675 times a year. He already has the greatest athletic specimen the NFL has ever seen at the WR position (Calvin Johnson). Over the past two seasons they have also added an array of weapons for Stafford to throw to. They’ve added the sure handed Golden Tate in free agency, and drafted the freakishly athletic TE out of UNC, Eric Ebron. Last season they also brought in premier PPR RB Reggie Bush and deployed Joique Bell. They also have promising young back Theo Riddick waiting in the wings should Bush go down with an injury. With a new arsenal of weapons, the high volume Lions passing attack should be more potent than ever.

5. Andrew Luck

Luck is the next great NFL QB. He’s coming off a 3,822 yard, 23 TD season. His numbers should only increase this season. Luck has Reggie Wayne and Dwayne Allen returning from injury, and the Colts replaced the dreadful Darrius Heyward-Bey with Hakeem Nicks. Their “star” RB Trent Richardson appears to be incapable of doing anything except catch passes. Elite QBs also tend to take the next step toward greatness in their third season. Expect Luck to continue that trend and begin to separate himself from other young QBs. Many don’t realize that Luck has more red zone rushing TDs than any other QB not named Cam Newton, and he’s sixth in QB rushing yards. Luck’s value should be even greater in dynasty/keeper leagues; he will be the best QB of the next decade.

6. Matt Ryan

With a healthy Julio Jones and Roddy White, Ryan should have a bounce back season. In 2012, the duo combined for 171 receptions, 2,549 yards and 17 TDs. Last season they only managed 104 receptions, 1,291 yards and five TDs. With all the production back in the lineup, Ryan’s numbers should skyrocket. The bright spot of last year was the emergence of WR Harry Douglas, who should continue to contribute. Rookie RB Devonte Freeman could really help their backfield as well. Expect Ryan to rebound from a disappointing 2013.

7. Tom Brady

Brady is flying under the radar this season. Nonetheless, he’s still Tom Brady. The former MVP and three time Super Bowl champion should have a much better season this year than last. Another offseason to build chemistry with his young receivers should go a long way in helping to improve the Patriots’ aerial assault. The return of the oft injured Rob Gronkowski and the even more oft injured Danny Amendola will make a huge difference if they can stay healthy, especially Gronk. The Patriots’ WRs dropped more passes last year than any other WR corps in the league. Brady is coming off his worst fantasy season since 2006 (not including 2007 when he tore his ACL week one). I’m putting my money on last year being an aberration and Tom Brady being Tom Brady again.

8. Cam Newton

Newton has slipped a bit on this list due to recent reports that he is dealing with a hairline fracture on one of his ribs. Still, he has been a top QB every year of his career, much in part due to the fact he is the best rushing QB in the NFL. Since being drafted first overall in 2011, Newton has rushed for a league leading 28 TDs. His numbers were down a bit last year from his sophomore campaign, however contrary to popular belief, the Panthers WR corps is improved from 2013. Newton accounted for 3,964 yards last season, down from 4,610 in 2012. Assuming he’s healthy, expect Newton’s yardage totals to improve this season. With the arrival of first-round pick Kelvin Benjamin and veteran Jerricho Cotchery, Newton’s TD passes should also go up. Cotchery caught 10 TDs last season in Pittsburgh and Benjamin scored 15 times at Florida State. Last season Carolina WRs Steve Smith, Brandon Lafell and Ted Ginn Jr only combined for 14 TD receptions. Newton could easily once again be a top five QB this season. His ADP of 69.11 gives him great value as the No. 9 QB coming off the board.

9. Robert Griffin III

Despite a 2013 season hampered by nagging injuries and a woeful preseason, Griffin still comes with great value this season. His ADP (86.70) has him the number 12 QB coming off the board. This year with a healthy Jordan Reed and the addition of DeSean Jackson, RG3 has better weapons than he’s had in his young career. The most important addition to the Redskins’ offense may be new head coach Jay Gruden. Gruden was able to turn Andy Dalton in to a top five fantasy QB in Cincinnati last season. I think it’s reasonable to assume that most of us believe that RG3 has a greater fantasy ceiling than Dalton. A healthy Griffin can greatly outperform his ADP and ranking this season.

10. Nick Foles

Foles is entering his first season as a full time starter. Last season, Foles accounted for 30 TDs and threw just two INTs. While no one can expect him to duplicate that incredible TD/INT ratio, he should improve as a QB with a full year under his belt. Chip Kelly’s high-tempo offense leads to more opportunities for their offensive players to acquire fantasy points. With Michael Vick gone, there will be no QB controversy in Philly this season. D-Jax is now catching passes in the nation’s capital, nevertheless he was replaced with Darren Sproles and rookie WRs Jordan Matthews and Josh Huff. More importantly, the Eagles top pass-catcher, Jeremy Maclin, is back on the field and could potentially be a comeback player of the year candidate. Foles efficiency could drop off a bit this season, however his yards and TDs should come at the same clip if not better. His ADP of 57.90 is a bit rich for me, but he has the potential to live up to his QB No. 6 draft slot.
