2014 Fantasy Football, Week Four Waiver Wire: Donald Brown Leads The Way

DBrown

Week three of the National Football League is officially in the books. And with that, fantasy football fans are looking towards the waiver wire to see if their team can be improved in any way. Some fantasy footballers will react — or, overreact — to their players performances unjustly during this period. Plenty of buzz and player recommendations will surface in preparation of your league’s waiver period causing owners to make rash decisions and drop players they spent months researching. But if I had one recommendation at all, it would be to sit back, relax and let your leaguemates be the ones to overreact.

Before we get to this week’s potential waiver wire pickups, it’s important to note that I WOULD NOT spend my first or second waiver priority on any player from the list below. Also, players listed below are in no particular order.

Lorenzo Taliaferro | Baltimore

The NFL is largely a league of opportunity. And this week, Lorenzo Taliaferro, took advantage of the Ray Rice suspension and the Bernard Pierce ineffectiveness — or injury. The rookie out of Coastal Carolina carried the ball 18 times for 91 yards (5.1 y/c) and a touchdown, but failed to haul in his only target out of the backfield. Pierce will likely regain the starting running back role once he returns from the thigh injury, but he could very well be on a short leash, especially if Taliaferro continues to run, miss tackles and accumulate yards after contact like he did in week three.

Players I’d drop for him: your lowest ranked player

Donald Brown | San Diego

Like Taliaferro, Donald Brown finds himself in the drivers seat in the San Diego backfield due to the unfortunate injuries to Ryan Matthews and Danny Woodhead. Brown played 62 of San Diego’s 60 week three snaps, carried the ball 31 times for 62 yards (2.0 y/c) and hauled in five passes on five targets for an additional 27 yards. Brown failed to get in the endzone — and to impress with the ball in his hands in general — but, the fact of the matter is that Brown will see the volume that fantasy football owners need out of their bell cows. In the next three weeks, the Chargers will face the Jaguars, Jets and Raiders. And currently, the Jaguars and the Raiders are among the top ten friendliest teams to opposing ball carriers, for fantasy purposes.

Waiver Priority Worthy: 3 and lower
Spend this much FAAB to acquire: 15-20%
Players I’d drop for him: Jonathan Stewart, Danny Woodhead, Lance Dunbar

Kirk Cousins | Washington

We listed Cousins on last week’s edition of the waiver wire, but not enough fantasy footballers took advantage of his availability, so he’s making back-to-back appearances. Cousins did a pretty good job of torturing Philadelphia’s defensive backs by going 30-of-48 for 427 yards and three touchdowns. Cousins was picked off once, but failed to take a sack and was the victim of five dropped passes. He was 6-of-12 for 230 yards with 2 touchdowns and one pick on passes of 20 yards or more in week three, so the deep ball will continue to be in play and will likely improve the value of Pierre Garcon, DeSean Jackson and open up the running game for Alfred Morris and company. As exciting as Robert Griffin III is, Kirk Cousins may be the better suited gunslinger for this Washington team.

Consider in leagues: 10-team
Waiver Priority Worthy: 8 and lower
Spend this much FAAB to acquire: 5-10%
Players I’d drop for him: Robert Griffin III, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brian Hoyer

Brian Quick | St. Louis and Allen Robinson | Jacksonville

Quick caught a lot of attention last season as a potential breakout player. While that didn’t exactly happen like some anticipated, he’s sure starting off his 2014 campaign on a mission. Despite not having his starting quarterback in Sam Bradford (which may be a blessing in disguise?), Quick has hauled in 16-of-21 targets for 235 yards and a touchdown. In addition to averaging 14.7 yards/reception, Quick has accumulated more than 50 yards after the catch. If you went running back early in your draft, Quick is one of the better waiver options thus far this season. Robinson on the other hand, is starting to get his targets. The rookie out of Penn St. earned three targets in week one, five in week two and ten targets in week three. He’s brought in 12 passes for 154 yards, but hasn’t scored just yet. It’s Blake Bortles time in Jacksonville, more passes and eventually scores should come his way.

Consider in leagues: 12-team
Waiver Priority Worthy: 6 and lower
Spend this much FAAB to acquire: 5-10%
Players I’d drop for him: Tavon Austin, Aaron Dobson, Jarrett Boykin

Marvin Jones | Cincinnati and Andrew Hawkins | Cincinnati

Warning: Both teams are on a bye in week four, so if you’re looking to add a pass catcher to stream for this week, these are not the guys for you. If you’re looking to stash for the long-term, Jone and Hawkins could be right up your alley. Marvin Jones is slated to return from a broken foot after the bye week, but will likely be Andy Dalton’s number three target behind A.J. Green and Mohamed Sanu. Andrew Hawkins hasn’t found the endzone just yet, but those scores are likely to come soon. He’s hauled in 21-of-27 passes (71.8%) for 244 yards (11.6 yards/reception), with 109 of those yards coming after the catch.

Consider in leagues: 12-team
Waiver Priority Worthy: 6 and lower
Spend this much FAAB to acquire: 5-10%
Players I’d drop for him: Tavon Austin, Aaron Dobson, Jarrett Boykin

Dwayne Allen | Indianapolis

Larry Donnell and Niles Paul graduated from the tight end slot in our waiver column. That leaves Dwayne Allen of the Colts in this week’s adventure. Allen has been targeted 12 times (18+% of his snaps) and caught eight passes for 107 yards and two scores. Andrew Luck is having one helluva start to the season, but can he keep it up?

Consider in leagues: 12-team
Waiver Priority Worthy: 10 and lower
Spend this much FAAB to acquire: 0-5%
Players I’d drop for him: Garrett Graham, Brent Celek, Tim Wright
