Justin Verlander Flirts With Another No-Hitter & Other Fantasy Baseball News

Justin Verlander flirted with another no-hitter, bringing it into the eighth inning when it was broke up by a single to Orlando Cabrera. The only other hit was by Carlos Santana in the ninth. Verlander finished the night with 1 walk and 12K. Two things to note from this game: (A) Verlander has etched himself as arguably the top pitcher in at least the AL if not the league; (B) Anyone can beat the Tribe right now (they are 2-8 in the last 10 and now trail the Tigers by a game).

The pursuit of 3,000 hits will have to be put on hold for the aged legend, Derek Jeter. The captain strained his calf and was put on the 15-day DL, keeping him 6 shy of 3,000 hits, a task only 27 other players have accomplished in the history of the game.

The Yankees rolled without a hitch, even without their mainstay and hammered the Rangers 12-4. A 41-minute game delay may have thrown thus far stud Alexi Ogando off track, as he was whipped for six runs all in the 2nd inning. One must wonder if our Senior Analyst, Brett Talley, made a voodoo doll, as he predicted the demise of Ogando in his last article of The Rubber. CC Sabathia wasn't beautiful, giving up 4 runs off 8 hits in 7 innings, but nonetheless easily won his 8th game of the year. Curtis Granderson hit his 21st dinger of the year and is now tied for most in the majors with Jose Bautista.

Albert Pujols (15) and Lance Berkman (17) again both homered, but it wasn’t enough to top the Nationals. Jaime Garcia pitched quite well, again distancing himself from his 11-run self-implosion 4 games ago, but was denied the W.

Cole Hamels is dirty, filthy, narrrsty and any other word that describes how ridiculously good he is this year. Hamels won his 9th game (T-1st) and held the Marlins in check to the tune of 1 run over 7 innings. Hamels has held 9 teams to 2 runs or less this season (if you were wondering, partner in crime Roy Halladay has done it to 10 teams). Cole had plenty of backing to win the game though, with homers from Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and 2 from rookie phenom Domonic Brown.

Adam Lind continues to tear the lid off the ball. Since his return from the DL on June 4th, he is batting .400, with 5 HR, 9 R and 12 RBI. He seems to have stolen Jose Bautista's mojo who has been relatively quiet as of late. It's not a huge surprise though, as J-Bot hot a crazy hot start and then cooled off in June last year too.

The Mets have managed to settle in the middle of the NL East standings, winning against the Braves last night and are 7-3 in the last 10. Jose Reyes stole 2 bases giving him 22 on the year and also raised his NL-best average to .346. Stay healthy buddy, that Carl Crawford-esque deal is right around the corner!

Jair Jurrjens was denied his 9th win, but still easily leads the NL with a 2.13 ERA. Dan Ughhh-la hit his 9th home run and has made a little run in the last 4 games that will hopefully carry him out of the worst season of his career.

James Shields KO’d the Red Sox, pitching his 3rd complete game shutout of the season. Besides a hiccup in Seattle, Shields seems to have finally really figured it out and should be a solid lock the remainder of the season.

Jered Weaver also pitched his 3rd complete game shutout of the season, easily beating the weak hitting Mariners. Weaver has struggled to get wins since he won his first 6 games of the year, but even in his 4 losses, he has looked quite phenomenal in every game. His 2.06 ERA leads the league (tied with Josh Beckett).

Yovani Gallardo and the Brew Crew didn't have enough fire power and yet another 9-game winner was denied. Gallardo did his part only giving up 1 run on 3 hits with 10 K.

Keep an eye on rookie Juan Nicasio. He struckout 9 in only 6 innings, albeit against the Padres.

Joakim Soria took back what was rightfully his and hasn't looked back. He earned his 3rd save in a row and in the last 8 innings has given up only 2 hits and zero runs.

Clayton Kershaw bounced back from 2 ugly starts and held the Reds in check for only 1 run, but Johnny Cueto and the Reds got the win. Speedster Dee Gordon stole his 3rd base since being called-up.

Darwin Barney hit the 15-day DL with a strain to his PCL in his right knee according to multiple sources.

Triple-A stud Andrew Miller may get the call-up to the majors next week. The Red Sox are considering having a 6-man rotation. If you are in a deeper league, you might try to find room for the to-be rookie.

It was short-lived but Kyle Drabek was sent back to the minors. Drabek started off the season strong and showed some real promise but struggled mightily recently, especially after giving up 8 runs to the BoSox.

Pitching matchups of the day: Anibal Sanchez @Roy Halladay, Travis Wood @Chad Billingsley, Mat Latos @Jhoulys Chacin, Dillon Gee @Tim Hudson, Josh Beckett @Jeremy Hellickson. Other hurlers going today are Madison Bumgarner, Ricky Romero & Derek Holland.
