Big Picture Analysis:

Pick Freely from: St. Louis, Chicago, Phoenix, San Jose:

Games to avoid: TB @ NJ, MIN @ COL

Offensive Explosion Potential:

St. Louis Blues @ Columbus Blue Jackets:

This is Blue Jackets goaltender Mike McKenna‘s first  start in over two years and the Blues are coming off a shellacking of the Toronto Maple Leafs by a score of 6-3. An intriguing stat that we uncovered, is that 12 of Columbus’s 14 wins have come against teams that have a worse face-off percentage then they do. The Blue Jackets come into this game 13th in that category. St. Louis, comes in at sixth best.

Of the St. Louis forwards, I am recommending Jaden Schwartz ($5,100 – LW) as the best of the bunch. He should have a very solid game, regardless of whether or not the entire team “explodes”.

We rate the Blues chances of scoring 3+ goals as a A+, 4+goals B+

Other Blues starters to go with:

David Backes ($6,800), Alex Steen ($7,200), Derek Roy ($4,900), Chris Stewart ($3,700), Patrik Berglund ($3,200), Jaroslav Halak ($7,700)

Chicago Blackhawks @ Toronto Maple Leafs

The Blackhawks head into Toronto having scored 6+ goals in each of their past three games. Furthermore, an incredibly intriguing and damning stat: the Blackhawks average 4.5 goals per game against the 10 teams that take the most minor penalties. The Toronto Maple Leafs take the third most minor penalties. I consider all of these players’ very solid starts:

From the Blackhawks #1 power-play unit:

C/Utility- Jonathan Toews | $6,300

C/Utility- Andrew Shaw | $4,900

LW/Utility- Patrick Sharp | $8,400

RW/Utility- Patrick Kane | $8,600

Defense/Utility- Duncan Keith | $5,400

Now, in the Hawks 7-2 destruction of the Philadelphia Flyers many Chicago players got on the scoreboard. With David Clarkson officially out (suspension), there are more great starts to be found here.

Kris Versteeg ($4,700), Brandon Saad ($5,800), Ben Smith ($2,500), Brent Seabrook ($5,900)

We rate the Hawks chances of scoring 3+ goals as an (A+), 4+ goals (A), 5+ goals (B+)

Carolina Hurricanes @ Phoenix Coyotes:

The Carolina Hurricanes are coming into Phoenix at the tail end of a long and unsuccessful West Coast road trip.  They dropped 2-0 to the Vancouver Canucks on Monday, 5-4 in overtime to the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday, and 2-1 in overtime to the Calgary Flames on Thursday. The Hurricanes are exhausted and likely demoralized after so many close games. Their next game is not until next Friday, December 20th. This game has all the makings of a potential blowout.

Most confident start: Mike Ribeiro ($6,300)

Other Coyotes to start: Mikkel Boedker ($5,100), Radim Vrbata ($5,900), Oliver Ekman-Larsson ($4,900), Keith Yandle ($6,300), Antoine Vermette ($5,200)

We rate the Coyotes chances of scoring 3+ goals an (A), 4+ goals a (B+), 5+ goals (B-minus)

Picks and Pans:

Here are some picks and pans for some of the other games.

Center- Gustav Nyquist– Detroit Red Wings | $4,100 | vs. PIT: The Penguins played last night at home, and now play Detroit the next day. With backup goaltender Jeff Zatkoff likely getting the call, Nyquist is among the Red Wings with the likeliest chance to score — especially considering the Penguins lack of depth right now.

LW- Justin Abdelkader– Detroit Red Wings | $3,100 | vs. PIT: He’s playing on a line with Pavel Datsyuk.

LW- Tomas Hertl– San Jose Sharks | $5,500 | @ NSH: Hertl is skating with Joe Thornton ($5,500) and Brent Burns ($5,100), a line likely to be facing the David Legwand line for Nashville. If that happens, it’ll be an offensive explosion for those three.

RW- Zack Kassian– Vancouver Canucks | $2,500 | vs. BOS: Kassian had a beautiful tip-in goal last night against the Edmonton Oilers. With Boston lacking a lot of depth right now, he, Zac Dalpe, Dale Weise, David Boothand Brad Richardson (all of these players between $2,500 and $3,000) are all solid options if you need a very cheap roster filler.

D- Johnny Boychuk– Boston Bruins | $2,800 | @ VAN: Boychuk is back from injury and doing what he has always done — block shots. The 29-year-old blue-liner blocked five against the Oilers, last time out. The Canucks defensemen shoot more than any other team, which makes him a good start on the cheap.

G- Anders Lindback- Tampa Bay Lightning | $6,200 | @ NJ: Lindback at this price is worth the risk. He is the only player from this game we recommend starting, and even still, he’s risky.

Official Lineup

I usually go with multiple lineups, but here is our most balanced one:

C- Mike Ribeiro ($6,300)

LW- Patrick Sharp ($8,400)

RW- Patrick Kane ($8,600)

D- Carl Gunnarsson ($2,800)

D- Johnny Boychuk ($2,800)

G- Anders Lindback ($6,200)

UTIL- Jaden Schwartz ($5,100)

UTIL- Gustav Nyquist ($4,100)

UTIL- Duncan Keith ($5,400)
