Cash Game Plays:

When in doubt, pick on the dumpster fires. This means, Edmonton, it means Buffalo, and it means Calgary.

My two cash game goalies are Pekka Rinne ($8,100) and Jonathan Quick ($8,000). Cam Ward is sadly not in play against terrible Buffalo, because when a stoppable force meets a movable object, there’s no telling what will happen.

Top-5 Mini stacks for Cash Games:

1. Jiri Tlusty / Alexander Semin | Carolina Hurricanes | Combined Cost: $9,900

2. Phil Kessel / James van Riemsdyk | Toronto Maple Leafs | Combined cost: $14,300

3. Tyler Seguin / Jamie Benn | Dallas Stars | Combined Cost: $14,300

4. Ryan Getzlaf / Corey Perry | Anaheim Ducks | Combined Cost: $15,300

5. Jeff Carter / Tanner Pearson | Los Angeles Kings | Combined Cost: $8,300

Top-5 Defensemen

1. Drew Doughty | LA | $4,900

2. Tyson Barrie | COL | $4,600

3. Shea Weber | NSH | $6,100

4. Brent Burns | SJ | $4,800

5. John-Michael Liles | CAR | $2,900

These players are all “Cash game” plays because they will all see Top line minutes, and power-play time (with the exception of Pearson, as he’s more of a salary relief option playing on a good line against a dumpster fire). If their team gets on the scoreboard, these are the most likely guys to be doing it, based on expected production.

But what about GPPs or Boosters? You want to maximize your upside, and the problem in particular with these goalie selections, are that they are unlikely to face many shots at all — Rinne in particular, as Nashville has the stingiest shots allowed per game total so far.

GPP Goaltenders:

Kari Lehtonen | $7,000 | Dallas Stars: Lehtonen is an excellent goaltender facing a team in Columbus that can score, but is clearly overmatched against Western Conference powers like Dallas. I’m absolutely expecting Kari to pick up a win here, and he’ll almost certainly face more shots than Rinne or Quick, with almost as good of a chance to get the win as the other two.

Jhonas Enroth | $6,200 | Buffalo Sabres: Nobody is more vocal about how bad Cam Ward is, than yours truly. He is simply not the same goalie he used to be. Given his advancing age at the missing stars that are Eric Staal and Jeff Skinner, I could easily see the Buffalo Dumpster Fires beating this watered down version of the Hurricanes. Enroth has been known to have games in the past where he stands on his head, and you can bet absolutely nobody will own him.

GPP Contrarian Forward Plays:

1. Rick Nash / Martin St. Louis | New York Rangers | Combined Cost: $9,900

The New York Islanders have so far just faced one team: The Carolina Hurricanes. We know that this team is basically an AHL team at this point, so the Islanders clearly have yet to be tested. This combo has been very hot as of late, as Nash has scored four goals already in just three games.

2. Michael Ryder / Adam Henrique | New Jersey Devils | Combined Cost: $8,400

Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Evgeni Nabokov will be making his first start in goal this year, as the Lightning are coming off a 7-1 destruction of the previously unbeaten Habs yesterday. It was a very emotional win for the Lightning, as they were swept by the Habs in the playoffs without having the services of their top goaltender Ben Bishop. The Bolts could mentally be unprepared for this game, and the Devils have had a hot start to the season. Henrique and Ryder will face off against a dumpster fire pairing that is Eric Brewer and Matt Carle*Note, despite out-shooting the Habs last night 41-17, Lightning defenseman Eric Brewer finished with a (-11) Corsi Rating. Yeah, he’s bad.

The Rest:

If you have multiple lineups, make sure you get exposure to Patrick MarleauMatt Ducheneand all Top-6 forwards for the LA Kings.
