The 2014 NHL season has begun! The first weekend of hockey is behind us, so lets look at some of the players you should be on the lookout for on your waiver wire.

Players to Add Now

Tyler Toffoli | Los Angeles Kings | ESPN Ownership – 63.1%

The 22-year-old native of Scarborough, Ontario has been finding good chemistry with Tanner Pearson and Jeff Carteras the trio each have three points and a (+5) plus/minus rating through three games. The former second round pick is still growing as a player, and has loads of potential. He’s a guy you want to add now before it’s too late.

Who I’d drop for him: Evgeny Kuznetsov (97.6%), Lars Eller (80.0%), Mikhail Grabovski (91.3%)

Pascal Dupuis | Pittsburgh Penguins | ESPN Ownership- 53.2%

The 35-year-old Dupuis was extremely productive in 2011 through the end of the 2012 season, registering 0.75 points per game. Dupuis was less productive last year — an injury shortened campaign — but with good health and the opportunity to skate with Evgeni Malkin, the Quebec native should return to being a very productive player.

Who I’d drop for him: All players listed above and… Alex Tanguay (95.0%), Clarke MacArthur (100%), Loui Eriksson (100%), Brayden Schenn (99.0%)

Tomas Plekanec | Montreal Canadiens | ESPN Ownership – 56.4%

“Pleks” is more well known for his defense than his offense, but he’s well known to be very streaky. He’s had seasons in which he put together really nice offensive numbers (2009 and 2010) but overall he can’t be counted on for consistent offensive production. I’d be willing to ride out this hot streak though…

Who I’d drop for him: Daniel Briere (71.2%), Chris Stewart (61.2%), Tanguay,

Darcy Kuemper | Minnesota Wild | Goaltender | ESPN Ownership – 67.2%

Kuemper has started the season with back-to-back shutouts of the Colorado Avalanche. While this originally was supposed to be a “platoon” of sorts, with Niklas Backstromthe 24-year-old Kuemper has superior talent and obviously significant more upside than the aging Backstrom. If Kuemper can keep up this pace — and this talent is something we saw last year as well — than he could easily find his way into the Top-15. He needs to be added now!

Who I’d drop for him: John Gibson (98.8%), Ben Scrivens (93.1%), Jake Allen (92.3%), Cam Ward (79.6%)

Players to Watch:

After all, it’s just the first weekend of the NHL season, but these players should be on your watch list.
