Daily Fantasy Hockey: DraftKings Value Picks, December 27th

Christopher Morais

The Fix always has a full breakdown of significant NHL slates for our Front Office subscribers, but now we’re also going to be highlighting a few value plays for everyone on most days with big NHL slates. Below you’ll find three or four players who are cheap and undervalued in today’s DraftKings contests.

If you’d like to read our full breakdown of tonight’s slate, complete with player rankings, you can become a Front Office member or purchase today’s breakdown individually

Rene Bourque—Columbus Blue Jackets–$2500

Rene Bourque still plays in the NHL? Yes, and tonight he actually becomes a player you can use if you really need a boxing bay bargain. Bourque is expected to play on the top line with Boone Jenner and Ryan Johansen. If he’s going to play with good players, he’s got a chance to pick up some points. At minimum price, it’s not a huge risk to start him, but he could easily put up a zero a ruin everything. The reward does outweigh the risk, so if you need to go cheap on a forward, Rene is your guy.

John Mitchell—Colorado Avalanche–$3100

Patrick Roy is once again changing his line combinations. This time he’s moved John Mitchell to the top line and moved Nathan MacKinnon down to the second line. This isn’t ideal for fantasy owners who wanted to stack Colorado’s top line, but it does open the door for some great value. Mitchell has 10 points (8G, 2A) in 24 games so far this season—with five of those points coming in the last ten games. He’s certainly earned his promotion. He isn’t expected to see any power play time, so his upside is limited, but at $3100, I’ll take it. Mitchell is an affordable option down the middle if you need one.

Joe Colborne—Calgary Flames–$3600

I’m not exactly big on recommending Colborne, but I do like his chances of picking up some points. Colborne is expected to skate on a line with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan, which give him a boost in value. Gaudreau has been phenomenal at home this season and Monahan has been excellent too. This is a case of a player benefitting from his line mates. Colborne isn’t too expensive to roster and could wind up with a couple of points thanks to Gaudreau and Monahan. The 25-year-old is an option if you want some exposure to Calgary’s top line. I’d advise everyone to use Gaudreau on a night like tonight, but if you can’t fit him in, Colborne is the next best option.
