Daily Fantasy Hockey Strategy: Value Picks, March 8th

The Fix always has a full breakdown of significant NHL slates for our Front Office subscribers, but now we’re also going to be highlighting a few value plays for everyone on most days with big NHL slates. Below you’ll find three or four players who are cheap and undervalued in today’s main DraftKings contests as well as some FanDuel contests from 7:00 pm on.

If you’d like to read our full breakdown of tonight’s slate, complete with player rankings, you can become a Front Office member or purchase today’s breakdown individually here.

DRAFTKINGS

Colton Sceviour— Dallas Stars–$3000 ($3900 on FanDuel)

The center is a bottom six player who has produced six points in his last ten games. It may not be much but he is a good 30-35% above his season average and becomes a case of riding the hot wave while you can. With Dallas having some occasional scoring woes, Sceviour has stepped in nicely to fill in some gaps. He may even see a modest boost in ice time on Tuesday night with a good match-up in Montreal. He is a center on DraftKings and a RW on FanDuel as a bit of a heads up.

Patrick Maroon — Edmonton Oilers –$3200 ($4500 on FanDuel)

He is producing a little bit in the way of points of late. Maroon has managed points in three straight games while gaining trust with the coaching staff. The left winger has ten shots on goal in the previous three contests and it definitely looks like the change of scenery did him good. As Edmonton plays out the string, maybe he even gets some power play time further increasing his value.

Greg Pateryn — Montreal Canadiens — $2800 ($3100 on FanDuel)

When the risks have to be made, what else do you expect us to do. Please remember this is only an eight-game slate and part of that has to do with the rotations of the schedule. Montreal is home to Dallas and a physical defenseman like Pateryn is seeing as much as 21 minutes a night of late. He does have a shot that can definitely hit the net with some force so the blue-liner has to be on the radar at the very least.

Ondrej Pavelec — Winnipeg Jets — $6600 ($6900 on FanDuel)

Pavelec is a high risk play no matter how any person can consciously slice it. The goalie does have two straight solid starts under his belt and does draw a tough match-up in Nashville but it may actually mitigate the risk a little. The Predators have a top six that can fire shots on net and if they are rolling, and that might mean an active night for the embattled Winnipeg netminder. It may be a roll the bones type of play here.

FANDUEL

Alexander Wennberg — Columbus Blue Jackets –$3800

If one wants to really go for it then Wennberg may be a decent stab in the dark here. The center has alternated good and bad performances over the previous four contests. There is no hot streak to report here as the entire Columbus team was a virtual no show against Philadelphia the other night. The best bet is hoping that maybe Columbus gets a good break or two against Jimmy Howard.

Nail Yakupov — Edmonton Oilers–$3200

This is intriguing only because of the simple fact that Yakupov is priced a little bit too low considering he is being paired with Connor McDavid. It does not mean that the play is an automatic one. However, it merits serious potential given the circumstances and match-up. The past couple games have been a struggle but the forward has speed to burn. It just comes down to a question of whether he hands actually fail him or not.
