Positional Breakdown

Starting Pitchers

There are plenty of top arms on the mound today, but is any better than Jose Fernandez? I could go for days discussing this kid’s potential and the stuff he brings to the table each and every time he takes the bump, but that wouldn’t be fitting for a rather short breakdown. In the last three weeks, Fernandez hasn’t allowed an earned run and is sporting a WHIP of 0.48. I shouldn’t forget to mention that he’s striking out 12.48 hitters per nine innings. If the Dodgers lineup has you worried, keep in mind that Fernandez has given up 1 earned run in 27 innings on the mound at home this year.

Madison Bumgarner and Alex Wood have both been pretty spectacular thus far this season. Both have had one or two inconsistent starts, but for the most part have been solid daily fantasy options on the year. Today when it’s important to try and pay up for a stud like Fernandez or Yu Darvish, Bumgarner and Wood provide some much needed salary relief. Vegas set the total of the Giants/Braves game at only 7 to start, one of the three lowest totals on the day. The reason I most like these two are their excellent strikeout potentials. Bumgarner and Wood are currently have K/9’s of 9.89 and 8.33 respectively. For the price, you should roster one of these guys.

Others to consider: Yu Darvish, Justin Verlander, Lance Lynn and Wade Miley.

Catchers

It’s hard for me not to just say take all Rockies and Mets today, but I’ll try to show you guys some outside of the box plays. I love two left-handed hitting catchers in particular today. Jason Castro and Matt Wieters are both guys that I’m going to be rostering in some lineups. Castro is actually a very solid hitter, playing for a very bad team. Make note that Brandon Maurer gives up A LOT of homeruns, placing himself in the top third in HR/9 after last season. Castro brings power potential and a low percentage owned to the table today. Wieters has been a catcher that I keep going back to because of his ability to swing the bat. He’s hitting .354 on the year with five homruns already. He gets to face another Minnesota Twins’ mediocre right-handed pitcher in Phil Hughes, roster him accordingly.

First Basemen

Justin Morneau is my top first baseman option today. He took a day off yesterday, but should be right back in there today against Dillon Gee. I could bombard you guys with platoon splits and other advanced statistics, but know that this game is being played in Coors Field with a current run total set of 11.5. You’re going to want to roster as many guys from this game as you can.

If you decide to go away from Coors Field, why not pull the trigger on Matt Adams? Again, I don’t like picking on my Cubs, but Adams had three hits yesterday and provides you with a ton of salary relief. He’s got tons of homerun upside and gets to play on Sunday Night Baseball tonight for that late game sweat. Jason Hammel has been pitching above his true ability this year and Adams hits right-handers with authority.

Others to consider: Lucas Duda and Miguel Cabrera.

Second Basemen

Daniel Murphy seems to be killing it since I recommended his zero hit performance on Friday night. He has five hits in his last two games and is getting to play in the best possible run scoring environment today. David Wright finally put it together behind him yesterday, allowing this Mets lineup to flourish in Coors. Murphy doesn’t provide a lot of power, but is almost a must play for cash games in my opinion.

I’ll once again drag you from Coors Field just for diversity’s sake. Ian Kinsler has been great hitting in front of Miguel Cabrera this year and is typically a genius play against left-handed pitching. Kinsler and company put up nine runs in Kauffman Stadium last night and have the potential to do so again against the veteran left-hander, Jason Vargas. You’ll have to pay up for him, but it’s a solid matchup.

Third Basemen

David Wright! He finally put together a solid game after my recommendation, hooray! I think I have to recommend him again today in what should be another slugfest at Coors Field. Opposite him, Nolan Arenado is a pure stud. The Kid has a 23 game hit streak and flashes the leather like Brooks Robinson (despite my youth, I do know who Brooks Robinson is). You don’t get points for web gems unfortunately, but you’ll get points if he hits another grand slam like last night. Feel free to roster both of these guys accordingly and sit back and watch the run totals pile up in this game at Coors Field.

Others to consider: Adrian Beltre and Evan Longoria.

Shortstop

#1: Troy Tulowitzki. I know I did this yesterday, but it’s the same business today, Tulo is the top option on the board anytime just about anytime he’s in the lineup. Especially today given the fact that he’s at Coors Field in what should be a slugfest, Tulo is your top option.

If you’re looking to go cheap and want to stay in Coors Field, keep your eye on Ruben Tejada. Tejada got the start last night and wasn’t really a part of the Met’s onslaught, but at his price and potential, he makes for a very solid option. Unfortunately he’ll be slotted down near the bottom of the order, but his salary relief at Coors Field is too much for me to pass up on if I’m not rostering Tulo.

Others to consider: Elvis Andrus and Derek Jeter.

Outfield

Carlos Gonzalez. Charlie Blackmon. Curtis Granderson. All three of these guys must be on your radar today for the oncoming slugfest at Coors Field. If you should decide to look elsewhere, I like Wil Myers, Jose Bautista, Adam Jones and Christian Yelich.

Mini Stacks

Coors Field – Wright, Tulo, Gonzalez, Morneau, Duda

Yankee Stadium – Longoria, Soriano, Myers, Beltran.
