2011 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Jaime Garcia Implodes, Jose Bautista Hits 20th & More

An implosion of astronomical proportions happened to Jaime Garcia last night. Colorado manhandled Garcia to the tune of 11 earned runs off of 11 hits in just 3.1 innings. Garcia took his first loss of the season and watched his 1.93 ERA skyrocket to 3.28.

There is an incredible array of top pitchers going on Sunday: CC Sabathia, Clayton Kershaw, Dan Haren, Justin Verlander, Josh Beckett, Alexi Ogando, Justin Masterson, Ricky Nolasco, Jair Jurrgens, Jeremy Hellickson, Matt Cain, and Kyle Lohse.

One year ago today, Roy “Doc” Halladay threw the 20th perfect game in League history. At the age of 34, he is showing no signs of slowing down with a 6-3 record, 2.35 ERA and over 9 strikeouts per 9 innings.

After a quiet few days, Jose Bautista went 3-4 with 3 runs and 3 RBI’s while hitting his 20th home run of the season.

Anthony Swarzak, young starter for the Twins had the no-no magic going through 7+ innings, unfortunately, that magic was no match for the mighty bat of Peter Bourjos who broke things up in the 8th. Oh yeah and some guy named Jered Weaver pitched 9 innings and only gave up 2 hits.

We’ll see if the Giants can once again strike lighting and have a young phenomenon carry their offense. Bradon Belt returns to the big leagues after a rather disappointing initial stint this season. We are almost a third of the way through the season and Belt is owned in less than 5% of leagues after his rough start to the season, but if you are willing to take an upside gamble for the rest of the season he might be worth it. Remember, not everyone can hit .300 in their first 50 major league at-bats.

Huge day for Corey Patterson, with 5 hits and 4 runs scored. Still, he is the definition of a hit or miss player.

MVP of the Week:  Jay Bruce (.452, 4 HR, 12 RBI). That's a hell of a week he’s putting together and a solid season too (.282, 14 HR, 39 RBI), as he currently leads in the NL in home runs and is second in RBI’s. Some might say his is having a better year than defending MVP Joey Votto.

There has been much written about the Buster Posey injury (see it here if you haven’t yet) over the last few days. It is certainly regrettable that one of the best young players in the game suffered such a gruesome injury on such a violent play, but I think all the calls for outlawing collisions at the plate is a bit pre-mature.

True, baseball is not normally a full-contact sport, but collisions happen, injuries happen. There is no way to regulate-out all the injuries and actions that happen in sports. Stuff happens whether it is in the midst of battles or in the midst of celebration like Kendrys Morales injury or Bill Gramatica’s jump for joy injury

So let’s step back and consider the fact that the last time any catcher was injured this badly was when Ray Fosee’s career was forever altered by Pete Rose in the 1970 all-star game. The moral of the story, you are more likely to get injured celebrating a win than in a collision at home plate.
