2011 Fantasy Baseball Rookie Report Week 9: Colorado’s Juan Nicasio Impressive in First Start

Picture

SP- JUAN NICASIO (COLORADO ROCKIES) – Nicasio was called up immediately following the season ending injury to starter Jorge De La Rosa. Juan had a 5-1 record at AA Tulsa with a paltry 2.22 ERA. In his first major league start Saturday he pitched seven innings only allowing one unearned run against the Central division leading St. Louis Cardinals. Aaron Cook is due to come off the disabled list soon so keep an eye on Nicasio and how the Rockies will use him. I see plenty of upside here if he gets a chance to show it.

RP- AARON CROW (KANSAS CITY ROYALS) – I touched on Crow in a previous Fantasy Fix Report but advised caution in picking him up not knowing how the Royals would use him. Well now we know, as of today Joakim Soria has been removed from the closers role and Mr. Crow has now been inserted. He is currently 2-0 with a 1.33 ERA, averaging nearly a strike out per inning. He is a must pick up going forward.

RP- AROLDIS CHAPMAN (CINCINNATI REDS) – Chapman is set to come off the disabled list today but do not get too excited just yet. Yes we love the 105 mph fastball, but I am starting to have concerns about his ability to throw strikes. Chapman has walked 20 batters while only striking out 15 this year. In addition he owns a 6.92 ERA a 2.00 WHIP and can not stay healthy. Not worth taking up a roster spot on your team unless he can throw more strikes and stay on an active roster. You can have him if you want.

1B- ERIC HOSMER (KANSAS CITY ROYALS) – Eric had a wonderful first month of his career posting .274/5/15 numbers and leading all rookies for the season in slugging percentage with a .505 mark. He has hit safely in 16 out of the 19 games he has played in. Hosmer has been planted into the third slot already for the Royals where he most likely will reside for the next 10-15 years providing they can show him the money. If he is still on your waiver wire grab him before your competitors read this article.

1B- MARK TRUMBO (LOS ANGELES ANGELS) – Mark leads the Angels and all rookies with 10 home runs. He has four home runs in his last 11 games. He credits some "mechanical adjustments" to his recent power surge. Trumbo hit 36 home runs at the AAA level last year so I expect his numbers to remain consistent through out the year. If you need help in power categories I recommend adding ASAP. He is still only owned in 38% of ESPN leagues.

SS- BRANDON CRAWFORD (SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS) – Crawford got his first major league start last Friday against the Brewers and promptly hit a grand slam in the seventh inning for his major league hit. Brandon's minor league career statistics do not show us too much as he only totaled 10 home runs in 2009 in nearly 500 AB's. The Giants infield situation is still unclear so I would temper expectations on Crawford until we see how much he will be used.

2011 HARPER WATCH
BRYCE HARPER (HAGERSTOWN A)
 – Harper is currently hitting .326 with 11 HR's and 35 RBI's in 49 games. He also has a .595 slugging percentage and seven stolen bases. His manager Brian Daubach feels Harper has done well in his transition from catcher to the outfield. The Nationals claim they have no motivation to play Harper at the major league level this year.
