Dustin Ackley Blasts 1st Homer, Carl Crawford Hits DL & Other Fantasy Baseball News

Picture

The Mariners called up Dustin Ackley this week and he is definitely worth keeping an eye on. He hit his first major league homer of his career against Vance Worley last night. Prior to the season, Baseball America had him ranked as the #12 prospect in all of baseball. If he flamed out, he wouldn’t be the first that failed to reach his promise. But if he is the Truth, you want to be the one to grab him for your team.

Carl Crawford has a Grade 1 hamstring sprain, not good news for a player who accumulates a lot of value from using his legs. He was placed on the 15-day DL.

Believe it or not, Scott Baker has been one of the hottest pitchers in the last 30 days and it is mind bottling (ode to Will Ferrell) that he is only owned in 58% of Y! leagues and even less in ESPN with 46.1%. Baker blanked the Padres, striking out 10 in 8 innings. Over the last month he has won 3 games, K’d 40, sits with a 2.36 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He has a career high in K/9 (8.64) and his .241 BAA is a lowest as well.

Jose Bautista has 1 home run in his last 19 games. What the *&%%! happened?

Matt Holliday’s homer in the 8th sealed the deal for the Cards over the Royals. It was his 2nd home run since returning from the DL 3 games ago.

Ubaldo Jimenez won his 2nd win of the season and stands a pitiful 2-7. Even John Danks (3-8) was laughing at him.

Wandy Rodriguez continues to be one of the only bright spots for the Astros. He won his 3rd straight game, pitching 6 innings of shutout ball. He has 7 straight Quality Starts in a row.

Will it be Michael Morse leading the Nationals in 2012? He's already taken the team under his wing so far this year. Morse hit his 13th home run, leading the Nats over the O's. Morse leads the team in homers, RBI's and batting average.

Dan Uggla had 2 doubles against the Rangers. Every bit helps…

The Mets pounded Dan Haren for his worst outing of the season. Haren only lasted four innings with the Mets scoring 6 runs off of 7 hits and a walk.

Gary Carter was rushed to the hospital on Thursday due to a coughing attack. As you may or may not know, he is battling brain cancer, please send positive thoughts to him and his loved ones.

Excellent article about the plight of the Oakland A’s in the bay area. As a bay area native I can attest to how the dynamic shifted in the early 1990’s when the Giants received their “territorial rights” to the south bay, including Santa Clara County. What was once an evenly divided A’s/Giants fanbase was slowly swallowed up by the Giants. Most do not remember, but before the crypt keeper, aka Al Davis, came in and took over the Coliseum, it was a great place to watch a baseball game. Then his shrine to commercialism and luxury boxes took over the outfield and all was lost. The Giants capitalized, and took the mantle as destination ballpark in the Bay and since then, Oakland has seen a slow, but steady decline. One has to wonder if the Giants looked decades into the future and knew that securing those territorial rights would eventually turn the bay area into a one-team location. Was this their end game all along? If so, as an A’s fan, I must sadly say well played.

Impressive string of pitchers going Sunday Cole Hamels, C.C. Sabathia, Alexi Ogando, Matt Cain, Jair Jurrjens, Yovani Gallardo. But special mentions must be given to Francisco Liriano and Justin Verlander who have entered that rarified air where they are a threat to throw a no-hiiter every time they toe the rubber.
