Fantasy Football Gold Week 6: Steve Johnson Keeps Paying the Bills

Picture

The great thing about football is that every week we find a new gem to emerge out of nowhere and make fantasy football owners jump to the waiver wire hoping to score big. Although the 0-5 Bills are currently looking like last year’s Rams, there are still players on the team worth the addition. Let’s take a look at WR Steve Johnson

Week 5 Line: 5 catches, 46 yards, 2 TD

The last time the 6’2” Johnson had two touchdowns in a game, he and his fellow Kentucky Wildcats pulled out a 35-28 victory over the Florida State Seminoles in the 2007 Motor City Bowl.

That year Johnson put together a solid season, hauling in 60 passes for 1,041 yards and a surprising 13 touchdowns.  His 13 scores are tied for the second-most single season total in Wildcats history.

Johnson posted a 4.59 40-yard dash time at the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine, .01 seconds faster than the Giants’ Mario Manningham and .04 seconds slower than Jets’ tight end Dustin Keller.  He was the 224th overall pick of the Bills in the 2008 draft, getting picked in the seventh round with the Browns’ Peyton Hillis and the Seahawks’ Justin Forsett.

Projections:

Johnson has had a touchdown in three consecutive games against the Patriots, Jets, and Jaguars.  In the last two weeks, he has more catches, eight, than counterpart top wideout Lee Evans.

When you look at Johnson’s stellar 2007 college campaign, you realize that the guy isn’t a stranger to catching touchdowns.  This is all good news for a player owned in only 13% of Yahoo leagues.

The Bills have a bye this week and their next three opponents allow only marginal success through the air: Baltimore, Kansas City, and Chicago.  However, the emergence of steady running back Fred Jackson and young quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is a positive sign for the Buffalo offense.  If you need a player to fill your flex spot, Johnson could be your strike at fantasy gold.
