The Daily Fix: Jed Lowrie “Adds” Causing Carpal Tunnel For Fantasy Baseball Owners

Picture

On this day in 1999, the “Iron Man”, Cal Ripken, Jr., hit the DL for the first time in his 19-year career with a sore back.

Caught “Red Handed”  – Apparently Mike Leake’s $425,000 salary isn’t enough to put clothes on his back. The Cincinnati Reds pitcher was accused of first-degree misdemeanor shoplifting charges yesterday in Hamilton County, Ohio. The 23 year-old former first round draft pick, reportedly removed the price tags of six American Rag t-shirts and attempted to walk out of Macy’s with them. The six shirts were valued at $59.88.

Fantasy baseball owners raced to their computers yesterday to make Boston's Jed Lowrie (left) the most added player in Yahoo! leagues. Lowrie carries multiple position elgibility (2B/SS) and has earned three consecutive starts from manager Terry Francona. In those starts, Lowrie went 8/14 with two round-trippers, seven runs batted in and six runs scored. Marco Scutarowho?

Good Call! Resident Sit ‘Em, Start ‘Em columnist for the Fix, James Bryce, suggested you should sit Ricky Romero against the Red Sox on Monday. Sure enough, Romero, who has been a top ten pitcher thus far in 2011, surrendered five earned runs on eight hits in just 4.1 IP. Additionally, Ricky Ro dished out five free passes while fanning only four Sawx.

Are you looking for some more production from your second basemen? Danny Espinosa (13% Y! ) of the Nationals is tied for second in MLB with 14 RBIs. Orlando Hudson (17% Y!) of the Padres is tied for third in MLB with six steals. Jed Lowrie, see above.

Matt Kemp (.474), Joey Votto (.444) and Starlin Castro (.418) are the only three players left in MLB batting over .400 with a minimum of 50 at bats.

Grady Sizemore (80% Y!, 90% ESPN) needs to be added to your roster immediately if he’s available in your league. Since returning to the Indians’ lineup from the DL, Sizemore is 5 for 9 with a home run, two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Of the 11 games played yesterday, Matt Capps of the Twins was the only closer to record a save, his second of the season.

Pitching duels I will be watching Tuesday: Jonathan Sanchez (SF) vs. Ubaldo Jimenez (COL), AJ Burnett (NYY) vs. Kyle Drabek (TOR) and Hiroki Kuroda (LAD) vs. Brandon Beachy (ATL)

Quick Fix Mailbag: As many of you know, the Fantasy Fix’s “Quick Fix” feature provides readers with the opportunity to ask for roster/lineup advice, trade mediation and sit/start recommendations for you fantasy baseball teams.

Today’s featured question comes from Caleb. He asks: Is Alexi Ogando a good LONG-TERM pick up and is Francisco Liriano worth keeping?

No, Ogando is NOT a good long-term pick up in 12 team or less mixed leagues. Ogando’s true colors may have poked through in his most recent start, in which he allowed five earned runs in 6.1 IP, and whiffing just one Yankee. In addition to the fact that "Ogando just isn't that good", resident starting pitcher analyst, Brett, considers him "a risk to end up back in the bullpen." Moreover, you have to be a few sandwiches short of a picnic basket to let Liriano go to the wire.Yes, he had a few rough starts, but the season is a marathon and he is to be rostered in ALL formats for now.
