2014 Fantasy Golf Daily Fix: The Wyndham Championship

If you read this Daily Fantasy golf column and followed my advice last week you were likely pretty successful. It was one of those weeks where all of my analysis came together. However, it’s a new week and no one cares what happened last week. In this edition of The Fantasy Fix’s Daily Fantasy golf column. We head to Greensboro, NC for the Wyndham Championship. And DraftKings is back with some top notch contests. Come on over and take a look.

Tour Stop

This week the PGA holds it final stop prior to the FedEx playoffs. The pros head to Greensboro, NC for the Wyndham Championship at the Sedgefield Country Club and specifically the Donald Ross Course. The course is a par-71 that runs 7,130 yards. The tournament has been held here since 2008.

The course has only three par 5s so scoring on par 4s will be key as it was last week. I’m also going to focus on Greens in Regulation (GIR) statistics as well to find some players.  Also, I’m going to look at those folks who succeed at the U.S. Open as Pinehurst 2 is a similar course to Sedgefield.

Unlike last week, we are going to have to do some digging – the top players in this field are barely top players and it’s likely that many players will be on many of them. We won’t go crazy with low dollar options, but we are going to have to dig around. I’m going to probably line up a stars and scrubs lineup.

Field

This tournament is the week after a major and as a result the field is weak. The top ranked player in the field is Hideki Matsuyama and he’s only rated 18th.

Also, thanks to GolfOdds.com for the odds this week.

Past Tournament Results

I’m throwing the last three years of top 20 at you – you’re welcome:

Past three years of Wyndham results

Let’s look at a few options this week.

DraftKingsExpert Picks

Charlie Beljan | $5,500 – He finished in a tie for 20th last year and he’s been OK on tour this year making just more than half of the cuts in his tournaments. He won’t win you much, but if he makes the cut he allows you to go big with some of the studs.

Tommy Gainey ($6,100) is another cheap option – he finished third here in 2011. And if you want to go even cheaper check out Ben Curtis ($4,900) – just a hunch. When he’s been up this year, he’s been quite good and he finished tied for 12 th his last time out at the RBC Canadian Open. Oh, even cheaper is Davis Love III ($4,300) who had back to back top 20s in 2011 and 2012. He missed the cut at the PGA, but that was his first miss since May.

Chad Campbell | $8,000 – Campbell is #1 in GIR % and did finish in a tie for fourth here in 2012. He’s gone T7, CUT, T13, CUT in his last four tourneys so he’s due!

Bill Haas | $10,500 – Haas doesn’t miss cuts. The only tourney he didn’t finish this season was one he withdrew from. Oh, and he also has back to back top 20 finishes here.

John Huh | $7,500 – Huh was tied for third here last year and 19th the year before. I really wish he was in better form as he hasn’t made a cut in over a month. But, I like him as a horse for this course.

Brooks Koepka | $9,600 – Koepka finished in a tie for fourth at Pinehurst this year. He hasn’t missed a cut since the Byron Nelson in mid-May. He’s tied for 34th in par 4 scoring average. He’s a bit cheaper than the most expensive players so he could lead a squad for all of solid players if you don’t want to spend on one of the big bucks players this week.

Bryce Molder | $6,300 – Molder finished tied for 16th here last year. Again, he’s not in top form, but he’s an above average putter and is not a long hitter so the shorter course should suit him.

Webb Simpson | $10,800 – He has four top 20 finishes in his last four trips to Greensboro. He also picked up a win in 2011. He’s been up and down all year long, but did make the cut at the U.S. Open (tied for 45th). He’s also from Charlotte which is closer to Greensboro than where I live so that’s something.

Brandt Snedeker | $11,200 – Best player in the field right now. His time with Butch Harmon has paid immediate dividends. Three straight top 25s and he tied for ninth at Pinehurst.

Robert Streb | $5,600 – Streb’s form isn’t great, but he’s got one number on his side – par 4 scoring average – where he’s tied for ninth. Well, two numbers – he’s cheap too!

David Toms | $6,900 – Toms withdrew from the PGA Championship with a back injury. He’s finished top 20 in two of the last three years here so he makes an attractive option. He’s also been on a bit of a run over the last couple of weeks. However, watch his injury (he’s also inside the top 125 so he may not need to play here to advance to the playoffs) to see if he’s going to tee it up.

Johnson Wagner – $6,900 – Wagner is another member of the Charlotte crew here and he’s played pretty well over the last month (nothing lower than 34th). He doesn’t have any of the numbers in his favor, but if it were all numbers you wouldn’t need analysts. Just plug in the data and winners for everyone! Plus, he has a killer mustache – just check out his DraftKings profile photo.

Check out my lineup as it sits right now.

Scoring Notes: Ties for a finishing position will not reduce or average down points. For example, if 2 golfers tie for 3rd place, each will receive the 18 fantasy points for the 3rd place finish result. Playoff Holes will not count towards final scoring, with the exception of the “finishing position” scoring. For example, the golfer who wins the tournament will receive the sole award of 1st place points, but will not accrue points for their scoring result in the individual playoff holes.

Player Lock Notes: All golfers lock at the time the first golfer tees off on day 1 of an event.
