2014 Fantasy Golf Daily Fix: Travelers Championship

Bubba_Watson_600_320

A wire to wire winner at the U.S. Open made for a great week. I didn’t have winner Martin Kaymer in my piece last week as he was one of the last three or four I cut out. That said, we still had some reasonable options. This week we head to the Travelers Championship. Below you will find my DraftStreet daily fantasy picks for the tournament this week. Come on and join me for a round!

Tour Stop

The Travelers Championship is held at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, CT. River Highlands is 6,854 yard, par 70 course – much shorter than most on tour. The course was built in 1928 and has undergone a series of name changes since then finally settling on the current name in 1989. The tournament has been played at this venue since 1984 so historical records all the way back to 1989 (the date of the last redesign) could be relevant.

Field

The quality of the field drops significantly this week as we see only 16 of the top 50 in the Overall World Golf Rankings in the field this year. The week after a major is always a bit of a down field.

Injuries

Tiger Woods is hitting his full range of shots. That means nothing for this tournament, but does give a glimmer of hope that he could be back at some point this year. Lucas Glover may be done for the year, but it’s unclear if he will follow through on his threat to shut it down.  Thomas Bjorn is still out as is Richard Sterne. However, we are supposed to get David Duval, Cameron Beckman and Kris Blanks back for this tournament.

Let’s look at a few options this week.

DraftStreet Expert Picks

Patrick Cantlay | $9,400 – Cantlay owns the course record of 60 from 2011 where Cantlay was still an amateur. Cantlay isn’t in form at the moment, but if you are going to go with one of the more expensive choices, you’ll need to go cheap elsewhere.

Brendon de Jonge | $16,470 – Six straight cuts made and he’s finished 28, 28, 30 and 29 in his last four. He’s got two top 10s here in his last four times out on this course.

J.J. Henry | $12,520 – Henry has made 11 straight cuts at this tournament and won way back in 2006. Again, if you want to run with a big boy this week, you’ll need to go cheap and Henry is a near-lock to make the cut this week.  He’s made four straight cuts and six of his last seven after a long run of missed cuts.

Brian Harman | $15,134 – Harman has been very solid this season with 15 cuts made out of 21 events entered.  His last time out was a tie for sixth at the St. Jude Classic.  And he fits into the salary scheme when going with a top salaried player.

Charley Hoffman | $17,505 – Hoffman has made nine straight cuts and finished tied for seventh here last year.

Marc Leishman | $17,364 – Leishman won here in 2012. He also is in solid form with four straight made cuts and three top 25s in that run.

Patrick Rodgers | $9,520 – He’s the number one ranked amateur player in the world (and he’s just turned pro).  He’s cheap and we do need some cheap options.

Kevin Streelman | $12,241 – Streelman has not looked good lately having missed four straight cuts. However, he’s ranked second in birdie percentage from 125 yards and in – a stat that I believe will lead to success for him this week.

Andrew Svoboda | $14,213 – Svoboda can birdie with the best of them and he’s got another short track on which to birdie away.

Bubba Watson | $27,949 – And here is the top salaried guy I’m going with. Watson is the most expensive player in the game this week and for good reason. He’s won and also has a tie for sixth, tie for 14th, tie for 38th, tie for second and a solo fourth place. He owns this course.
