Daily Fantasy Baseball Fix

The Fantasy Baseball season is unfortunately winding down and as such, owners are beginning to lose interest in certain leagues as they fall deeper out of contention for either the playoffs or the Rotisserie league title. Thankfully for those that enjoy Daily Fantasy Gaming, Draft Kings is here to help with their 100k Sweet Spot Challenge. Admittedly, the qualifier format is extremely difficult, but for those with deep pockets, the $100 entry fee can seem like a breeze to handle. After tackling the $2 qualifier yesterday with mediocre results, I am returning today to the Daily Dollar and Triple-Up challenges, my favorites that Draft Kings offer. If I end up losing again, next time I may try and Download Nvidia Control panel on Fileproto.com to make my gaming experience a little better. Maybe by perfecting the quality and speed of the game will give me more chance of winning, but we will have to see.

Anyways, there is very little rain on tomorrow’s slate of games. The Phillies @ Nationals game is highly likely to have a delay, given extremely high rain chances tomorrow before the game. The skies are expected to completely clear though by 7 p.m. eastern time, (the game starts at 5:05 p.m.). If the game starts and stops, that could spell trouble for the pitchers, but I’d be okay in going with any player from that game tomorrow.

As usual, the depth of coverage for possible starts in Sunday games is much greater than that of Saturday games because of Draft Kings’s “Early Only” and “Late Games” formats, which allow them to get in more contests for those eager gamers. Today, instead of just giving my team and some suggestions, I’ll just list a wide range of suggestions at each position, with some commentary. This change in format for me in the Sunday column, was made by me because I personally have struggled with Daily Gaming so far, even though my intentions are correct. I’ve only cashed a couple of times, so hopefully you can make ultimately better decisions if faced with a wider range of choices (which fortunately is an option on Sunday’s).

Pitcher:

Luxury Pick- Mike Minor, Atlanta Braves: vs. MIA, $11,300: Minor, along with league-mate Patrick Corbin (coincidentally also a fellow lefty) has had a phenomenal season. The 25-year-old lefty out of Vanderbilt sports a 2.76 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP along with an 11-5 record on the year. Minor, a fly-ball pitcher (only a 36.0 percent ground ball rate) has been helped by a couple things specifically. Minor has been aided by the addition of B.J. Upton and Justin Upton who have been excellent in the outfield along with Gold Glove winner Jason Heyward. Minor has helped himself as well. He has lowered his walk rate for the second straight season, and that number now sits at 5.2 percent – a much improved number to his 8.3 percent in 2011. Minor has also increased his strikeout rate. Interestingly enough he’s not been very “lucky” per-se (at least not more than last year if you even believe he was lucky in the first place last season. His batting average against last year was .226 and it sits at .223 this year.

Middle Tier “Safety” or “Solid” Pick- John Lackey, Boston Red Sox, @ KC, $8,200: Enter the righty version of Mike Minor, at least in terms of scary close peripherals (setting aside the obvious differences in batted ball tendencies). Minor and Lackey both sport a 3.21 xFIP. Unlike Minor, Lackey has been unable to “outpitch” his xFIP, and his ERA sits at, wait for it, 3.21. Lackey has an identical walk rate to Minor, sitting at 5.1 percent. Ironically, his strikeout rate is also incredibly similar, as that comes in at 22.5 percent. Readers of the fix, and especially my content, should be perfectly familiar with how much I love John Lackey. In a pitchers park, despite going up against a “red-hot”, Royals team, I like his chances.

Bargain Bin “Wal-Mart” pick- Joe Kelly, St. Louis Cardinals, vs. ChC, $5,000: Ahh, the “Wal-Mart” pick. You may regret making the purchase, because the quality can sometimes be pretty crappy – caution, product is highly flammable – , but other times you are pleasantly surprised by the outcome of the purchase. Joe Kelly is the best of the bunch in the bargain bin. He faces Edwin Jackson who is likely to get absolutely pounded by the incredible Cardinals offense. The 25-year-old righty out of UC Riverside, has some strange reverse splits this season, as he’s been significantly better against left handers than right handers. Kelly has a 19.7 percent strikeout rate against lefties and a 7.8 percent walk rate. Against right handers, Kelly strikes out just 13.8 percent of batters he faces, and walks 9.1 percent of them.

Catcher:

Luxury Pick: Carlos Santana, Cleveland Indians, vs. LAA, $4,600: It’s hard to call Santana a “luxury pick”, but against the always flammable Jerome Williams, Santana has a chance to contribute in a big way.

Middle Tier “Safety” or “Solid” Pick: Brian McCann, Atlanta Braves, vs. Mia, $4,000: McCann homered Friday in a 2-for-4 performance but was held out of the lineup yesterday due to knee soreness. He felt well enough to pitch hit yesterday though, so he’s likely to start today. He faces Henderson Alvarez, who McCann is 2-for-4 against in his career. That stat is pretty much meaningless, but it adds to the puzzle.

Bargain Bin “Wal-Mart” pick- Tony Cruz, St. Louis Cardinals, vs. ChC, $2,800: There’s really nothing more to say here, other than the fact that you can’t get a cheaper guy that’s actually a starting catcher, than Cruz. He and Rob Johnson have been spelling the injured Yadier Molina.

First Base:

Luxury Pick: Joey Votto, Cincinnati Reds, vs. SD, $5,300: Votto has three multi-hit games in his past four games and now the Reds welcome (with very big and open arms) the home run prone Ian Kennedy.

Middle Tier “Safety” or “Solid” Pick: Eric Hosmer, Kansas City Royals, vs. Bos, $4,100: Hosmer has been en-fuego in his past eight games, with seven multi-hit games in that stretch. Incredibly, Hosmer has raised his batting average to .298 on the season now, and has made savvy fantasy owners who held onto him, even in shallow 12-team mixed leagues (yes I am one of them) look incredibly smart.

Bargain Bin “Wal-Mart” pick- Chris Colabello, Minnesota Twins, @ CWS, $3,100: Colabello has two home runs in his past four games. The 29-year-old right handed batter out of (and yes this is true) Assumption College, gets the benefit of facing White Sox lefty Jose Quintana.

Second Base:

Luxury Picks: Ian Kinsler, Texas Rangers, @ HOU, $4,800: AND Jason Kipnis, Cleveland Indians, vs. LAA, $4,800: Both Kipnis and Kinsler have excellent matchups tomorrow. Kinsler faces left handed soft tosser Dallas Keuchel in the right handed hitter friendly Minute Maid Park, and Kipnis gets to face the previously mentioned Jerome Williams. Owners would be wise to pick one of these guys and start them.

Middle Tier “Safety” or “Solid” Pick: Matt Carpenter, St. Louis Cardinals, vs. ChC, $4,200: Carpenter was mired in an awful 0-19 slump at one point in late July/ Early August, but Carpenter has five multi-hit games in his past seven starts coming off that slump, getting his average back up to .302 on the season.

Bargain Bin “Wal-Mart” Pick: Maicer Izturis, Toronto Blue Jays, vs. OAK, $3,400:

Third Base:

Luxury Pick: Adrian Beltre, Texas Rangers, @ HOU, $5,300:

Middle Tier “Safety” or “Solid” Pick: Jeff Baker, Texas Rangers, @ HOU, $3,600: Baker, a left handed pitcher world destroyer, was brought to my attention by Brett Talley, managing editor and big time Ranger fan. Baker is a must start whenever a left handed pitcher takes the hill against the Houston Astros. He currently is hitting .362 against them.

Bargain Bin “Wal-Mart” Pick: Junior Lake, Chicago Cubs, @ STL, $2,500:

Shortstop:

Luxury Pick: Brian Dozier, Minnesota Twins, @ CWS, $4,800:

Middle Tier, “Safety” or “Solid” Pick: Elvis Andrus, Texas Rangers, @ HOU, $4,500:

Bargain Bin “Wal-Mart” Pick: Jose Iglesias, Detroit Tigers, @ NYY, $3,000:

Outfield:

Luxury Picks:

Jose Bautista, Toronto Blue Jays, vs. OAK, $5,600:

Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels, @ CLE, $5,700:

Middle Tier, “Safety or “Solid” Picks:

Alex Rios, Texas Rangers, @ HOU, $4,500:

Carlos Beltran, St. Louis Cardinals, vs. ChC, $4,300:

Bargain Bin “Wal-Mart” Pick: Christian Yelich, Miami Marlins, @ ATL, $3,200:
