Fantasy Football Week 5: Jets vs. Vikings Monday Night Football Analysis

Picture

An already intriguing game became even more so this week with the trade of Randy Moss, the reinstatement of Santonio Holmes, and the introduction of Brett Favre’s penis to the Internet.

Let’s go in reverse order: Favre, the penis picture is not the best way to close. Mark Sanchez has been hot, but I think Santonio needs a little time to get back into the offense. And if I’m a Jets fan, I’m genuinely terrified of Moss.

Randy always does well when he feels disrespected and switches teams. Throw in the fact that Darrelle Revis continues to talk yak, and Randy has all the incentive he needs to have a huge game.

All that said, this is a battle of two very good defenses, so it's unlikely any team goes off.  Plus, the Vikings are really trying to find themselves on offense and might take a little time to fit Moss in.  But, you still have to assume the Vikings will do whatever they can to get Moss into the end zone—if nothing else, the ol' gunslinger will tell him to go long a couple of times and take a couple shots.

The Jets have been surprisingly kind to opposing wide receivers: They are giving up the ninth most points to them.  This can be somewhat tempered with the fact that they've had a couple of blow outs where the other team had to throw, and they probably employed the always fantasy-friendly "prevent defense."

In the alternative, the Vikings are giving up the sixth least points to opposing wide receivers, but then again, they really haven't faced anyone too daunting.

Both teams are stout against the run, so big games from Adrian Peterson, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Shonn Greene are unlikely.  This promises to be an excellent football game against two Super Bowl contenders, but the most interesting aspect of this game might just be the off-field stories swirling around both teams.

The Vikings are dealing with the Brett Favre sexual harassment fallout and trying to introduce a huge new talent (and ego) in Randy Moss.  The Jets are dealing with the always flapping jaws of Darrelle Revis, their role in the Favre harassment scandal, and the introduction of potential No. 1 receiver Santonio Holmes.

Big fantasy days are unlikely, this looks like a 21-17 type of game.  I'd give the edge to the Jets, since they are at home and have looked like the best team in football over the last couple weeks, while the Vikings haven't played well and are now dealing with all kinds of off-field issues.
