This past Thursday we brought you this free preview article, showing you the reader the perks of being a Front Office member of The Fantasy Fix. It was our first Daily Fantasy Hockey of the year, and boy did we hit the nail on the head.

On Thursday, we finished in the money with our starting lineup, and our alternate suggestions were just as good. We suggested Cory Schneider as a alternative at goaltender, Nazem Kadri and Brandon Saad as alternatives at utility. Saad and Kadri both scored goals and Schneider completely stole the show, stopping 34 of 35 shots on Thursday night in the New Jersey Devils 2-1 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings completely outplayed New Jersey, leading in shots 27-5 after two periods.

Now let’s get going with our Team of the Day: As always, we play on Draft Kings, but all of this advice can be translated to whichever site you, the reader, play at. Just keep in mind there will obviously be differences in price with some of these players.

Goaltender:

Antti Niemi– San Jose Sharks | $8,400 | vs. NJ: Niemi is by far the safest pick of any goaltender tonight, as his Sharks are coming off a 5-1 drubbing of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Now, the worry here, is not that Niemi won’t get the three bonus points for the win, but that New Jersey will muster enough shots for Niemi to be able to put up more than five points. In any case, Niemi is by far the safest and most reasonably priced goaltender on the market for today.

Other options:

There are two goalies tied for the lowest priced starting goaltender for the day. The first is Kevin Poulin of the New York Islanders and the second is Jonas Hiller of the Anaheim Ducks. Both of these goaltenders come in with a dirt cheap price of $6,200 but, as with anything cheap, there is a lot of risk as both goaltenders started last night against tough competition.

Let’s start with Poulin. The 23-year-old net-minder has been throw into the proverbial fire in a big way this season, following the injury (as well as poor performance leading up to it) of starting goaltender Evgeni Nabokov. Poulin has seen his goals-against average and save percentage rise considerably over the last five games. With those numbers now sitting at 2.92 and .896 respectively, the Islanders are now staring their seemingly never-ending goaltending troubles in the face yet again. The former fifth-round pick allowed four goals to the Pittsburgh Penguins last night, an unfortunate performance given the fact that Pittsburgh rolled out rookie backup Jeff Zatkoff. Zatkoff of course is best known for allowing six goals to the Florida Panthers in his first career start.

Now Poulin is set to face a, and yes we can’t believe it either, white-hot Philadelphia Flyers team that has scored 22 goals in their past seven games after scoring just five goals in their past five games before that streak. Oh, and fun fact, their game on October 26th was the game before the Flyers streak of five goals in five games. The team they faced on that night was, you guessed it, the New York Islanders, and of course, they scored five goals. The Flyers have not lost in regulation since November 7th. Let’s just say, i’d stay away from Kevin Poulin.

This leaves Jonas Hiller standing alone in the moonlight as the only dirt-cheap option we would touch. The 31-year-old turned in a sterling performance against the Tampa Bay Lightning last night, stopping 28 shots in regulation and then three more in overtime to earn the shut-out as his Ducks blanked the Bolts 1-0. This performance for Hiller is quite the stark contrast to his past two performances. The native of Felben Wellhausen, Switzerland allowed four goals on November 20th against the Devils and five goals (on just 20 shots) against these same Tampa Bay Lightning back on November 14th.

Perhaps for Hiller, the key is being busy. Some goalies are just wired that way. He faced 30 shots last night for the first time since October 18th against, the Phoenix Coyotes, who of course, he faces tonight. In fact, Hiller faced 30 shots in each of his first four games and only allowed six goals over that stretch. For the non-mathematically inclined, that’s a 1.50 GAA over that span. Since then? Hiller has yet to face 30 shots in a game (before last night), and has allowed 29 goals in those 9 games. That mark is good for a 3.22 GAA.

The Coyotes have yet to lose in regulation since, and these coincidences are beginning to get comical, November 6th against these Anaheim Ducks 5-2. Expect the Ducks to be tired, and expect Hiller to face a barrage of shots. Given the information laid out in front of you, that might make him a pretty clever start, would it not?

Left Wing:

Tomas Tatar– Detroit Red Wings | $2,500 | vs. OTT: The Ottawa Senators have been a very porous defensive team this season, except for one line. Their Clarke MacArthur – Kyle Turris – Bobby Ryan line has been absolutely sensational in every facet of the game. Therefore, the Red Wings will need to get scoring from secondary sources, or better yet, on the power-play. The Red Wings home power-play percentage comes in at 25 percent, seventh best in hockey. The Senators, while not having a putrid penalty-kill, do sit in the bottom third of the league. More importantly however, the Senators have spent the most time on the penalty-kill this season. Insert youngster Tomas Tatar for the Red Wings, who has been getting plenty of power-play time. Despite his minus-3 in their most recent game against Carolina, we expect Tatar to benefit from the fact that the Senators third line of Cory Conacher – Zack Smith – Mika Zibanijad doesn’t play any defense whatsoever. Darren Helm and Justin Abdelkader make for intriguing cheap picks for the same reasons

Center:

Henrik Zetterberg– Detroit Red Wings | $6,900 | vs. OTT: Zetterberg is recommended for many of the same reasons as Tatar. Except, Zetterberg gets to face the defensive pairing of Erik Karlsson and Marc Methot, a duo which has been woeful defensively. Offensive-minded Karlsson is a minus-five in his past three games. Also, Zetterberg is paired with Gustav Nyquist, a 24-year-old sniper who announced his presence in a big way, scoring two goals in his debut last game.

Right Wing:

Jakub Voracek– Philadelphia Flyers | $4,900 | vs. NYI: As you already read, we are quite skeptical of the Islanders chances tonight against the Flyers. In addition to the earlier information given, the Islanders have the worst penalty-kill in hockey, coming in at an absolutely putrid 70 percent. While the Flyers power-play hasn’t exactly set the world on fire either, they have been kicking it up a notch lately, having scored a power-play goal in each of their past six games. The 24-year-old Voracek has six points in his past six games, including three power-play points.

Defense:

Alex Pietrangelo– St. Louis Blues | $5,900 | vs. DAL: Pietrangelo has been excellent this season, manning the point with off-season acquisition Jay Bouwmeester. The 23-year-old defenseman currently leads the Blues with eight power-play points. The former fourth overall pick in the first round has been one of the main reasons why the Blues sport the leagues best power-play percentage. He hasn’t recorded a point in the past three games, but he’s blocked 13 shots. In this rivalry game there should be enough penalty minutes allocated to both sides to allow the Blues power-play to thrive against the Dallas Stars 20th ranked penalty-kill unit.

Jay Bouwmeester- St. Louis Blues | $5,100 | vs. DAL: See above. Additionally, Bouwmeester has been the hottest “Blues-liner?” – pun intended – racking up seven points in his past eight games. Roll him with confidence as well.

Utility:

The Rest of the Flyers Power-Play: vs. NYI

Vincent Lecavalier | $5,600

Claude Giroux | $5,900 

Scott Hartnell | $5,000

The trio have been the hottest members of the Flyers lately, with their scoring outputs as follows:

Lecavalier: five points in past six games

Giroux: seven points in past eight games, including  28 shots

Hartnell: six points in past eight games

Roll these guys with extreme confidence.

Other options:

Flyers: RW: Matt Read | $5,000, RW: Steve Downie | $4,900, C: Brayden Schenn | $5,000, C: Sean Couturier | $3,800, D: Mark Streit | $3,900, D: Kimmo Timonen: $4,200 

Vladimir Tarasenko– St. Louis Blues | $4,300 vs. DAL: The 21-year-old Russian right-winger has seven goals on the season, and two in his past five. However, he just has three goals overall since October 15th against the Sharks, a game during which he tallied his fourth goal in as many games. Fortunately, his opposing winger tonight is the slow-skating Erik Cole who has an atrocious minus-10 plus/minus rating.

Vancouver Canucks Defensemen |  vs. Chicago: Ok, hear us out. At 10.7 percent, to say that the Canucks power-play is struggling is an enormous understatement. However, the Chicago Blackhawks penalty-kill problems cannot be overstated. They come in with a six-feet under mark of 72.7 percent, a mark which cements them firmly below the Top-28 teams in the league in terms of penalty-kill efficiency. Head Coach John Tortorella likes to get his defensemen involved on the power-play and defensemen Dustin Byfuglien and Keaton Ellerby both scored power-play goals for the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night against these Chicago Blackhawks. 

Jason Garrison ($4,000) hasn’t registered a point since the Reconstruction Era of 1877, which has landed him in the doghouse of his fiery head coach.

Alex Edler ($4,700) broke a dry spell last night, recording two points after tallying just one in his prior 12 games.

Kevin Bieksa ($4,500) has five points in his past seven games, along with 17 shots, and has been the only consistent Vancouver defender all year long.

These three are risky, there’s no question. But if you like taking risks, need a middle-tier defenseman and/or vehemently dislike the Chicago Blackhawks, you may find solace with one of these three defensemen tonight.
