2013 Fantasy Baseball, Week 18 Tools of the Trade: Dealing For Hanley Ramirez

TheFantasyFix.com’s “Tools of the Trade” is a unique guide for owners to use while attempting to make an even trade with their league-mates in a standard 12-team mixed, 5×5 head-to-head or rotisserie redraft league.

The values present in this guide are simply the basis for a trade. A full-blown analysis of each team’s strengths and weaknesses are essential prior to proposing or accepting a trade offer.

How to use the guide: Ideally, owners will agree to a trade that will aid both sides and stay within $2-3 of each other in a one-for-one and $4-5 in a multi-player deal, according to our chart.

The Week 1 “Tools of the Trade” was free for all readers, but going forward, the “Tools of the Trade” will only be available to Front Office members. Learn the benefits of being a Front Office member here.
Without further ado, here is week 18′s trade value chart:

Trading isn’t easy. It’s fun, but not easy. Remember that you don’t have to “win” the trade in order to pull the trigger. If you’re improving your team, then you should make the deal.

Each-and-every week fantasy baseball owners send us their trade proposals and/or offers via our “Quick Fix” and Twitter to determine if the offer is fair and whether or not the trade should be proposed or accepted.

This week’s theme? Hanley Ramirez.

There were high expectations entering 2013 for Hanley Ramirez in the City of Angels (Dodgers?). However, Ramirez fell victim to the injury bug and appeared in just 39 contests in the first half of the season. But in those 127 at-bats, Ramirez slashed .386/.444./.685, smashed eight homers, knocked in 23 runs and swiped four bags. His fiery return was exactly what the Dodgers needed, especially with Matt Kemp on-and-off the disabled list with various injuries. Now HanRam and the Dodgers are cruising towards the playoffs with their eyes on a few more pieces to solidify their run. And you should be doing the same. Here are a few recent deals that went down involving one of the hottest players in the league right now:

A month-and-a-half later, it’s easy to say that this is a win for the squad receiving Hanley. But at the time, it was likely a shrewd move on the part of the Alex Gordon owner. To me this is a great deal because Gordon had an excellent first-half, but based on outfield depth in the league, it was worth the risk to acquire a potential top two player at third base or short stop. The flip paid off, but I’m sure the Alex Gordon owner doesn’t feel like he was violated that bad. The guy is still a stud and should pan out well for the remainder of the season.

Again, it’s easy for us to analyze a deal a month after it was done, but I’m still going to tell you I like the Hanley side. Yes, I think Cliff Lee is and will be the better pitcher of the two swapped in this deal for the duration of the twenty-thirteen campaign, but not by enough of a margin to call Hanley for Martinez a wash. Like the outfield situation in the previous deal, starting pitching has enough depth that you can make up the small amount that you may have “lost” out on by dealing Lee for Greinke by fishing from the waiver wire — well, in leagues less than 14-teams, anyway . As of today, this would be a $14 difference according to our chart, so, good job snagging Hanley when you did, Rusty.

A great strategy of dealing from depth to power-up an area of need. The $ appears to be a bit off for the team acquiring Posey — and I’d still rather Hanley of the two — but, this seems to be a fair deal that helped out both teams the time.
