Cubs’ Prospect Willson Contreras Promoted, Glen Perkins Out For the Season
The Chicago Cubs have promoted highly touted catching prospect Willson Contreras to the big league club, according to reports. He’s expected to join the team late Friday. In a corresponding move, the Cubs will designate veteran catcher Tim Federowicz for assignment. In just 13 games this season, Federowicz slashed .192/.222/.269 in 27 plate appearances.
MLB Pipeline called Contreras the top overall catching prospect in the minors and the second-best prospect on the Cubs’ farm. In 55 games at Triple-A Iowa this season, Contreras is slashing .353/.442/.593 with nine home runs, 43 batted in and four stolen bases.
It’s unclear how much playing time Contreras will see right away, but the Cubs appear to be content with carrying a trio of catchers going forward. For fantasy purposes. Contreras should be owned in deeper 15-team mixed leagues. He’s likely rostered in NL-Only, keeper and dynasty formats, but if he’s not, make the add or FAAB bid accordingly.
More to come on Willson Contreras this evening.
Glen Perkins to Miss the Remainder of the 2016 Season
Reports today indicate that Twins’ closer Glen Perkins will likely miss the remainder of the 2016 season. In addition to experiencing rotator cuff issues, the former All-Star will need to go under the knife to repair a torn labrum. After numerous attempts to improve the condition via a throwing program, the southpaw finally shut it down and sought medical assistance.
Brandon Kintzler and Fernando Abad figure to share the closing duties in Minnesota with Kevin Jepsen being recently removed from the position. Abad features the better peripherals (0.79 ERA/1.99 FIP) and strikeout rates (18.8% K-BB%) at this time, so if you’re deciding between the two, he’s the one to be adding.
