2014 Fantasy Golf Daily Fix: Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial
Welcome back to another exciting week on the PGA Tour. We stay in Texas this week and head off to Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial played in Fort Worth, Texas at the Colonial Country Club. Below you will find my DraftStreet daily fantasy picks for the tournament this week. Come on and join me for a round!
Tour Stop
Colonial Country Club is a 7,204 yard par 70 course that first opened in 1936. The club has a rich history and has been a staple of Tour play holding this tournament at the same venue since 1946. This week’s course is similar to the Byron Hogan last week in that there are only two par fives on the course so ball striking and play around the greens will be extremely important. Long hitters hold very little advantage here.
Field
It is another relatively thin field this week as we have just 20 out of the top 50 in the Overall World Golf Rankings in the field this year. However, we do have new World Number One Adam Scott in the field.
Injuries
Patrick Reed remains out with his first child due May 26. Graeme McDowell is also out for the same reason (well, not the exact same – his wife is also having a baby). John Merrick withdrew last week with a hand injury – it is unclear if he’ll remain in the field this week. He’s not worth the risk. D.H Lee, Jason Day and Victor Dubuisson all remain out with unclear return dates as does former number one in the world Tiger Woods.
2013 Tournament Results
Here is the top 20 from the Crowne Plaza Invitational in 2013:
Let’s look at a few options this week.
DraftStreet Expert Picks
Matt Kuchar | $26,575, Zach Johnson | $25,427, and Jim Furyk | $24,537 – I can’t really separate these three, so you should strive to have one of them on your roster this week. Kuchar is playing out of his mind right now. He has five top 10s in his last six tourneys. Zach Johnson has won here twice in the last four years. His other two finishes were a tie for ninth and a solo fourth. Furyk is likely my choice as he’s the cheapest of the three and is on a roll with back to back solo second place finishes and no finish lower than 20th in his last six tourneys.
Paul Casey | $16,294 – Three straight top 20 finishes shows that Casey is in fine form heading into the Colonial. He actually snuck into the field when Patrick Reed withdrew. He hasn’t played here since 2010, but his form is excellent and he did finish fifth and ninth in his prior two starts here.
Graham DeLaet | $20,126 – DeLaet is a ball striking wizard. I’m going to keep trotting him out here every week until he wins. He was tied for seventh last week and is in solid form.
Charley Hoffman | $15,438 – Hoffman hasn’t missed a cut since February and that’s the only one he’s missed in 15 tourneys this season. He’s got two top 20 finsishes in his last two trips to Colonial.
John Huh | $15,616 – Huh has alternated making and missing cuts over his last six tourneys. However, last week he was tied for 16th at the Byron Nelson, a tourney that should be similar to this week’s stop. He’s played the Colonial twice and has a tie for fifth place and a tie for 11th in those two appearances.
Kevin Kisner | $13,220 – Kisner played well last week (tied for 16th) and has made five cuts in a row. He’s a solid, inexpensive option.
Ryan Palmer | $16,983 – Palmer is from Texas so that’s good for this week. He’s a member at Colonial. Oh, really? He was tied for 14th last year after a fifth place finish in 2012.
Boo Weekley | $15,617 – I don’t generally recommend a defending champion, but Weekley’s game is just too good not to put him on the list. He finished fifth last week and of course has a win at the Colonial under his belt with four sub-70 rounds last year.
Louis Oosthuizen | $16,515, Brendon de Jonge | $14,321 and Rory Sabbatini | $14,485 all fall into my Sub-Saharan Africa group Oosthuizen and Sabbatini hail from South Africa and de Jonge from Zimbabwe. All three looked solid last week. Sabbatini has a win here in 2007, de Jonge has made four straight cuts here and has improved his place each of those and Oosthuizen finished in a solo 11th place last week. I’m going with de Jonge, but all three make reasonable options for middling prices.
And from way downtown…. couple of really deep plays to help you get some more studs on your squad.
Franklin Corpening | $7,789 – Who? Exactly. Corpening is from Texas. Good. He went to TCU. Better. He’s a member at Colonial. Best! He finished tied for 14th here last year and that brings him back again this year. He’s a regular on the WEB.com tour, but he’s no stud there. However, he did fire a final round 62 last year at Colonial. The course record is 61. He gives you so much flexibility elsewhere that it’s going to be hard not to have him on your squad.
Julien Brun | $7,712 – Brun is another cheap option (though without the upside of Corpening). Burn is a junior at TCU and he is skipping the NCAAs to play in this tourney. He’s even won a tourney in Europe so he knows how to play the pro game.
Check out my lineup as it sits right now – I may pull Huh out for Hoffman, but we’ll see.
Good luck this week! Head over to DraftStreet to choose your squad for this week.
