2014 Fantasy Golf Daily Fix: Deutsche Bank Championship

deutsche

I had both the winner and runner up in my lineup last week and that made up for two missed cuts. Hopefully, my two-week hot streak continues this week in this edition of The Fantasy Fix’s Daily Fantasy golf column. We head to Norton, Massachusetts for the Deutsche Bank Championship.  And DraftKings is back with some top notch contests. Come on over and take a look.

Tour Stop

This week we enter the second week of FedEx playoffs. This tournament runs starts on Friday and runs through Monday to take advantage of the Labor Day holiday. We are now down to 100 eligible players as we continue to whittle the field down to the final 30 who will compete for the top prize.

The tour heads to TPC Boston in Norton, MA south of Boston for the Deutsche Bank Championship. The course is a par 72, 7,241-yard golf track with 58 bunkers where water comes into play on about half of the holes.

The course was redesigned in 2007 so any results prior to the redesign aren’t nearly as useful even though the tournament has been held here since 2003.  And since that redesign, the course has played under par every year. It’s an easy track for the pros.

The course has four par 5s and four par 3s, but it’s such a simple course that I’m not going to focus on stats for much of the analysis this week.

Field

The second round of the playoffs limits the field to 100 and not all of those 100 are here (we are down to 94). Along with those missing from last week (Dustin Johnson, Jason Dufner and Steve Stricker), we had Graeme McDowell and Paul Casey withdraw due to impending fatherhood.  Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia also withdrew, but most likely to rest up for the Ryder Cup.

You can follow the projected FedEx Cup standings here.

Also, thanks to GolfOdds.com for the odds this week.

Let’s look at a few options this week. You’ll see a couple more choices than normal as there are a lot of ways to go this week.

DraftKingsExpert Picks

Jason Bohn | $4,600 – Bohn isn’t the best option this week, but he is cheap if you want to go with a stars/scrubs roster. Bohn has made the cut in all five of his appearances at Boston so he’s a horse for the course.

Jason Day | $9,800 – Day is healthy and hot. He’s made the cut in all six trips here and has two top 15s in his last three starts here.

Ernie Els | $7,600 – Els is a great mid-tier value play making five straight cuts since the Open Championship with his only real hiccup along the way a tie for 64th at the Wyndham. He tied for fifth last week and closed with a strong 66 on Sunday.

Rickie Fowler | $9,700 – A machine he is. Hasn’t finished lower than a tie for 13th since June.

Jerry Kelly | $5,200 – Another “scrub” this veteran is the definition of a grinder. He’s made seven straight cuts including a tie for third at the John Deere. He was also tied for 10th here in 2011. Another option if you want to get some of the stars into your lineup.

Hunter Mahan | $8,900 – It’s the playoffs and I repeat myself from last week: “He’s never missed the TOUR Championship since the FedEx playoff format was adopted in 2009. He seems to get hot at this time of year, so ride him again this week.”

William McGirt | $6,800 – He’s got back to back top 10 finishes on tour and seems to be heating up at the right time. He’s made the cut two out of the last three years here (though he missed the cut last season).

Vijay Singh | $5,000 – Singh isn’t the Singh of old who won here twice (last time in 2008). However, he’s won here twice and he’s made three straight cuts.

Kevin Stadler | $6,500 – Back to back top 10 finishes over the last two seasons here puts Stadler on the list. He hasn’t been great, but he also hasn’t missed a cut on Tour since June.

Brandt Snedeker | $8,600 – It’s time to get back on the horse. Yes, he missed the cut last week, but he really likes this course and his form (outside of last week) is impeccable.  He tied for 47 th here last year, but the three years prior he was in the top 10 in each start.

Brendan Steele | $5,700 – Steele has finished in the top 20 (including last year) in his only two trips to TPC Boston. He isn’t in the best form (tie for 57th last week, tie for 58th at the PGA), but he did have back to back fifth place finishes earlier this season after missing two straight cuts. He can get hot if a course (like this one) strikes his fancy. He sits outside of the top 70 so he needs to make up some ground to qualify for next week’s tournament.

Bo Van Pelt | $6,800 – Van Pelt needs to make a push to get into the final 70 for next week’s tourney and he’s rounding into form with back to back top 15 finishes. He finished seventh here in 2011.

Gary Woodland | $7,200 – Woodland is long (like the Lama). He can take advantage of some of the par 5s and with an easier course his misfires with the driver won’t be nearly as damaging. He finished tied for 13th last week with his final three rounds all in the 60s.

Check out my lineup as it sits right now. We have until Friday to make moves so we’ll see if any other news comes out that makes me change my lineup.

Scoring Notes: Ties for a finishing position will not reduce or average down points. For example, if 2 golfers tie for 3rd place, each will receive the 18 fantasy points for the 3rd place finish result. Playoff Holes will not count towards final scoring, with the exception of the “finishing position” scoring. For example, the golfer who wins the tournament will receive the sole award of 1st place points, but will not accrue points for their scoring result in the individual playoff holes.

Player Lock Notes: All golfers lock at the time the first golfer tees off on day 1 of an event.
