Daily Fantasy Golf Strategy: TOUR Championship

We have come to the Tour Championship – the final week of the 2014-2015 PGA Tour season. It’s been quite a ride and I hope you’ve enjoyed playing Daily Fantasy golf at DraftKings and with us here at the Fantasy Fix. We’ll be off for a few weeks until the 2015-2016 season starts up in mid-October with the Frys.com Open.

It’s a great week to check out DraftKings as they have some top notch contests for the final week. Come on over and take a look.

Tour Stop

It is the TOUR Championship and the battle for $10 million. That’s a pretty sweet prize! We are now down to the final 30 29players who are eligible for the ultimate prize of $10,000,000!

The final tour stop is in Atlanta, GA at the East Lake Golf Club which is a 7,307 yard, par 70 course original designed by Tom Bendelow and re-designed by Donald Ross in 1913. In 1994, Rees Jones, restored Ross’ design at East Lake. East Lake has been the host of the TOUR Championship since 2004 and the Championship has been held here a total of 15 times.

It doesn’t look like we’ll have any weather issues this week as the East Coast has been on a run of dry weather and the wind looks like it will be a non-factor. Check back Wednesday to see how the weather evolves.

Scorecard breakdown: This is the scorecard for us “regular” players. They turn two of the par fives into par fours to get to Four (4) par threes, twelve (12) par fours and two (2) par fives.

Field

There are only 30 29 players and all 30 29 see the weekend.

The full field can be found here.

Thanks to GolfOdds.com for the odds this week. If you’d like to see a second set of odds, check out the Betting Zone’s odds here – just click on this week’s tournament on the left hand pane.

Past Tournament Results

The TOUR Championship has been held at East Lake every year since 2004. East Lake also hosted the tourney in 1998, 2000 and 2002. So, we have some solid historical stats to work with for our final tournament.

Statistical Review

It’s a par 70 course, so we’ll be back to focusing on our par four scoring mavens. Beyond that, we don’t want to get to cute. It’s a small field full of some of the best players in the world (and a few others who aren’t so “best”).

This week, I’ll focus on:

Greens in Regulation (GIR) – Those at the top of the leaderboards in the TOUR Championship have always finished at or near the top of the GIR rankings for the week.

Par 4 Birdie or Better (P4:BB) – par 70 courses mean tons of par 4s and the need to score on them.

Strokes Gained: Tee to Green (SG:T2G) – We need to split hairs and this stat will bring out the truly premium player.

I also always examine Strokes Gained: Putting and Strokes Gained: Tee to Green every week with SG: T2G being more important and more predictable from week to week.

DraftKings Expert Picks

Jason Day | $12,500 – Day is the world number one and currently the hottest player on Tour. He has four wins in his last six tournaments. He’s going to be tough to get into lineups, but keep reading to see who you can add to a Day lineup to make it work.

Rory McIlroy | $11,700 – I don’t have a strong feeling either way on McIlroy. He’ll probably be fine as he’s finished in the top 10 here in his last two trips (over three years). His profile is great (but you knew that already – his profile works just about everywhere). I’ll probably end up owning some Rory, but I’ll also jump up to Day or down to Stenson as well.

Jordan Spieth | $11,000 – I know it sounds strange, but something seems off with Spieth. I don’t see playing him this week as his form hasn’t been right since he started fiddling with his irons. He missed back to back cuts to open the playoffs, but righted the ship with a T13 last week. He finished T27 here last year so I’d rather spend my money elsewhere.

Henrik Stenson | $10,500 – Stenson has a statistical profile similar to the high man on the list Jason Day. He’s 14th in P4:BB, first in GIR and second in SG:T2G. He has the best average finish of any player in the tournament. He’s played once and he won. He has three straight top 10 finishes and five in his last seven. I like him to continue his solid run of top 10s this week.

Rickie Fowler | $10,300 – It’s time to ride the Fowler train one more time as he’s playing great golf at the right time. He followed up his win three weeks ago with a T4 at the BWM last week. He finished solo eighth at the TOUR Championship last year.

Justin Rose | $9,800 – I love Rose this week based on his success at this course. He has three top 10s in the last three years. He’s sixth in P4:BB, ninth in GIR and eighth in SG:T2G so his game works as well. Load up on Rose this week.

Dustin Johnson | $9,100 – Eh, not this week. I know he can bomb his way out of a lot of trouble, but he gets himself into a fair amount of it too. He hasn’t performed well tee to green ((77th SG:T2G) and players will need that this week to succeed. I’ll have him in a couple of lineups, but he’s not a core player for me even though he has three top 10 finishes in his last four and has two top 10s in his last two trips to the TOUR Championship

Bubba Watson | $8,700 – Bubba. BubbaBubbaBubba. His profile works (seventh in P4:BB, 13th in GIR and first in SG:T2G). He’s made six straight cuts and has four top 10 finishes in that run. He was 14th last year, but does have two top 10s in his five trips to East Lake.

Zach Johnson | $8,500 – This just seems like the type of course where Zach can succeed. It hasn’t really shown in his results as he has only three top 10 finishes in eight trips. But, he’s playing extremely well as he’s made 11 of his last 12 cuts with five top 10s. He’s played well in the playoffs as he’s finished T4, T22 and T13 in the first three tournaments. He’s a pretty safe play.

Hideki Matsuyama | $8,000 – Hideki debuted here last year and ended up T22. His profile works well here (fifth in P4:BB, 20th in GIR, sixth in SG:T2G). Last week’s T7 was his best finish since his T5 in early June at the Memorial.

Jim Furyk | $7,900 – Withdrew with a wrist injury.

Matt Kuchar | $7,800 – Kuchar has only one top 10 in five trips to East Lake and that alone is enough for me to be underweight on him this week. The profile works, but he’s been up and down on Tour the last two months. I’ll probably slide down a bit in the salaries to find someone else with a bit more upside.

Louis Oosthuizen | $7,700 – Oosthuizen profiles well as he’s 39th in P4:BB, 43rd in GIR, and 22nd in SG:T2G. He seems to be healthy. Seems to be. He’s got back to back top 20s on Tour though his best finish here is T23 in his only trips. I don’t think many gamers will be on him (comparatively) and he can certainly play well here.

Patrick Reed | $7,600 – Reed is the ultimate volatility play and is a perfect choice for this week. The worst he can finish is 29th! He’s 51st in P4:BB, 136th in GIR and 39th in SG:T2G. So, he can score, but has some issues getting to the green on time. He’ll score well and his downside is limited by the short field.

Paul Casey | $7,500 – Casey is kind of Hideki-lite with a bit better debut (T4 back in 2010), but a withdrawal due to injury just a few weeks ago. Casey is 19th in P4:BB, fourth in GIR and ninth in SG:T2G so he should be able to score here this week.

J.B. Holmes | $7,400 – See Johnson, Dustin but with less skill.

Bill Haas | $7,300 – Haas won here in 2011, but has been a bit worse in his only other two trips (the last two years). He’ finished T24 and solo 16th. His struggles on par 4s (90th in P4:BB) says I should probably stay away even though he’s 22nd in GIR and 21st in SG:T2G. He does have a good track record at the Wyndham as well (which is also a Ross) so perhaps I’ll put him in some contrarian lineups.

Brandt Snedeker | $7,300 – Current form is bad – CUT, T44 and 66 th in his last three. Fun fact – has a brother named Haymes. Oh, yeah he won here in 2012, but I don’t care about that now.

Robert Streb | $7,300 – It’s a par 70 course and Streb is one of my favorites to use when par scoring is at a premium. He’s 33rd in P4:BB, 17th in GIR and 24th in SG:T2G so his profile should work. My only concern is that he’s never played here previously, but he’s still a player I’ll use a good deal this week.

Brooks Koepka | $7,300 – Which Koepka do we get? The one who ran off three straight top 10s heading into the playoffs or the one who has missed two of three cuts in the playoffs with his best finish a T49. I’m leaning toward the former a tad bit as his profile work (third in P4:BB, 16th in GIR, and 32nd in SG:T2G).

Charley Hoffman | $7,200 – Hoffman played here once in 2010 and finished in sixth place. He can score on par 4s (25th in P4:BB), but doesn’t have the accuracy and tee to green game we’d like this week. He’s been up and down over the last four (missed cut, T62, third and T53) so he’s a bit of a risk.

Kevin Kisner | $7,200 – Kisner has T20, T12 and T41 in the FedEx Cup playoffs. He’s here in the finals based mostly on his three playoff losses. His profile doesn’t work and we’ll pass.

Daniel Berger | $7,200 – So Berger must really like money because he’s woken up at just the right time. He missed six out of seven cuts heading into the playoffs, promptly missed the cut at the Barclays and then….boom! A T12 and a solo second and his in the TOUR Championship. He makes his debut here, but with a profile that has some pieces to work with (87th in P4:BB, 31st in GIR, and 35th SG:T2G). He’s a good fit in a Jason Day lineup.

Kevin Na | $7,100 – Na has played here three times and never finished better than 17th. His profile isn’t the best and his recent form reminds me a bit of Matt Kuchar’s and as such I’ll probably stay away and just go with…

Scott Piercy | $7,100 – Piercy is a high volatility player who will likely be the one who leads a lot of stars and scrubs to the top or bury them at the bottom of the DraftKings’ leaderboards. Piercy finished third last week. After putting together a run of T79, 48th, T62 and missed cut. But, he can score on par 4s (23rd in P4:BB) and in a week with a guaranteed four rounds, he’s an option in the stars/scrubs setup.

Danny Lee | $7,000 – The thrill is gone. His last four tourneys have found Lee no better than T30. Pass.

Harris English | $7,000 – English has back to back top 20 finishes and miraculously hasn’t missed a cut since early May at the PLAYERS. He’s making his debut here with a profile that shouldn’t work (115th in P4:BB, 51 st in GIR, and 57th in SG:T2G).

Jimmy Walker | $6,900 – Does anyone know how he’s here? Oh, yea, he owned the start of the season. But, lately? Not so much. Since his win at the Valero at the end of March, he’s has one other top 20 finish over 14 tournaments. No thanks.

Sang-Moon Bae | $6,800 – Bae has one of the worst profiles of the 29 players here. He had a T6 at the Barclays, but he’s done little else for most of the year. No thanks.

Steven Bowditch | $6,700 – Nice eybrow. Bad profile.

For example, if 2 golfers tie for 3rd place, each will receive the 18 fantasy points for the 3rd place finish result. Playoff Holes will not count towards final scoring, with the exception of the “finishing position” scoring. For example, the golfer who wins the tournament will receive the sole award of 1st place points, but will not accrue points for their scoring result in the individual playoff holes.

Player Lock Notes: All golfers lock at the time the first golfer tees off on day 1 of an event.
