Before I get into my @DraftKings team of the day, here are some weather notes for tomorrow’s games. –Note rain percentages aren’t definitive and are best used as a reminder to check the weather status again on game-day before selecting a player from that game.
Potential rain concerns: Another potentially rainy day tomorrow in Atlanta for the Dodgers @ Braves game – 50% scattered thunderstorms at game time. Rays @ Orioles – 60% chance of rain, and scattered thunderstorms at game time and all day long.
Wind factors:
DET @ TEX: 19 mph winds blowing in from right field (same as last night, and only 4 runs were scored).
MIL @ STL: 15 mph winds blowing straight across the field (from first base line to third base line) – shouldn’t really effect too much, though the trajectory on the wind could change to allow for a more hitter friendly environment.
Here is my team:
Pitcher: R.A. Dickey | $8,400 @ NYY: Going for the home run pick is the way to win these daily fantasy games. Dickey’s knuckleball velocity came back a bit in his last start, and it resulted in a 10 strikeout performance over just six innings pitched. There are many scenarios where starting Dickey can go woefully wrong. He’s streaky though, so it’s worth a gamble.
Pitcher: Travis Wood | $6,800 vs. NYM: Wood is due to regress eventually, but the Mets wheel out an absolute joke of a lineup against left-handed pitchers. Ike Davis and Lucas Duda usually sit, and Daniel Murphy occasionally sits as well, giving way to Justin Turner. As long as Wood keeps the hot-hitting David Wright in check, he should be excellent.
Other options: Let’s face it, Dickey is quite risky, so A’s starter A.J. Griffin becomes a very intriguing backup option. Griffin has allowed just four earned runs in his last three starts – spanning 20.2 IP, along with a 16:3 K/BB ratio in those last 20.2 innings.
Catcher: Matt Wieters | $3,600 vs. TB: Wieters hits very well against Tampa lefty Matt Moore .545/.643/.1091 against him in 11 at-bats. His three walks compared to four strikeouts is a positive as well.
First Base: Paul Goldschmidt | $4,900 @ MIA: There’s really nothing that can be said to quantify just how amazing of a season Goldschmidt has had so far. Goldy is hitting .339 with 12 HR, and hit two of those 12 HR in a 4-5 performance two games ago in Miami. Ricky Nolasco loves to give up HR’s, so this is an easy pick.
Second Base: Kyle Seager | $4,000 @ CLE: Seager faces off against righty killer Justin Masterson. Thankfully, Masterson is an atrocious pitcher against left-handed batters, which Seager happens to be. Seager is 4-6 with a double against Masterson in his career.
Third Base: Evan Longoria | $5,100 @ BAL: Longoria has completely owned Baltimore SP Chris Tillman in 15 career at-bats, going 7-15 with three home-runs three walks, only one strikeout, and a stolen base. His slash line vs. Tillman sits at an absurd .467/.556/.1133.
Shortstop: Troy Tulowitzki | $5,700 vs. SF: Tulowitzki went 4-5 yesterday against Tim Lincecum in an excellent overall effort by the Rockies against him (scoring a total of 10 runs last night). Tulowitzki does hit an absolutely dreadful .159/.174/.250 against Zito in 44 at-bats, but Zito is due for a lot of regression still, and in Coors Field, it will likely come.
Outfield: Dayan Viciedo | $3,100 @ LAA: Viciedo has been excellent since returning from the disabled list on May 10th. He has four multi-hit games, with seven runs scored, seven RBI, and two home runs. Viciedo is 4-6 with a HR and a walk in his career against Jason Vargas.
Outfield: Carlos Beltran | $4,100 vs. MIL: Beltran is a certified Kyle Lohse kiler. In 43 career at-bats, Beltran has four HR, five stolen bases, eleven walks, only five strikeouts, and twelve RBI. His slash line is an absolutely absurd .511/.596/.911 (that’s a .400 ISO!) vs. Lohse!
Outfield: Shane Victorino | $3,400 @ MIN: Victorino faces off against Pedro Hernandez, whom he and the rest of his Red Sox teammates teed off on two weeks ago. During that start, Hernandez gave up six earned runs and seven hits in two innings. Victorino is 2-2 vs. Hernandez, and one of those is a HR.
Other options:
OF: Jay Bruce | $3,600: Bruce has really been heating up, and he’s insanely cheap. The Reds face Phillies right-hander Jonathan Pettibone, who has been rocked so far this season.
OF: Shin-Soo Choo | $4,900: Choo is a great option, although not cheap, the Reds should have a monstrous day against Pettibone.
News and Notes from Saturday in baseball
The Braves lost relief pitching stud Eric O’Flaherty to a UCL issue, and is likely heading for Tommy John – joining Jonny Venters -. That news for Atlanta puts a big dent into their hopes of overcoming the Nationals due to a sudden lack of depth in the bullpen. The Braves beat the Dodgers 3-1 behind a nice bounce-back performance from Kris Medlen.
The St. Louis Cardinals lost Jaime Garcia to a shoulder injury. As he heads to the disabled list, it creates some very interesting opportunities for some of the young Cardinals pitchers Trevor Rosenthal and Carlos Martinez. With Westbrook on the disabled list as well, there is an opening to be filled in the rotation, and both of those guys are worth a speculative stash in the deepest of leagues.
Red Sox starting pitcher Ryan Dempster pooped the bed again last night, adding to his struggles, that culminate in 11 earned runs allowed in his last nine innings pitched. Fortunately for the Sox, they still won 12-5. Meanwhile, Dempster is absolutely droppable in 10-team leagues.
Kyle Kendrick came back to earth a bit for the Philadelphia Phillies, as the Reds put up 10 runs against the Phils on Saturday. Kendrick gave up four earned runs in six innings pitched . He struck out two and walked four. Perhaps most concerning was the fact that he threw 112 pitches and only 67 of them for strikes. He should be kept in most 12-team mixed leagues, but if you were streaming him, you can safely drop him.
