2013 Fantasy Baseball, The Daily Fix: August 24th, 2013
Saturday is a new day for me to play the daily fix, so I had to the adjust the challenges that come with Saturday baseball. Draftkings loves to separate the schedule between the early games, prime time games, and late games. There are usually more day games on Saturday, so playing either schedule can be daunting. We’ll give it the best shot we can as my lineups have won a couple of days in a row. Who knows, maybe this whole picking based on fantasy points per game inefficiencies is paying off.
Today, I’m playing in a Double Up! contest again. They range anywhere from a dollar to over 100 dollars, but each works the same way. If you finish in the top half you get almost twice as much as you put in. Naturally, DraftKings gets their cut because they have to pay their employees, the light bill, and make a little for their trouble. That being said, they are very generous to those that start playing as they will give you a deposit bonus you can access here.

C

Jason Castro |
3,900 |
7.4 |
He’s not necessarily elite, but considering he has more than 50 extra base hits, he’s a good play. |
1B

Darin Ruf |
3,600 |
7.7 |
If the Phillies have done anything this season they have discovered two new productive bats in Ruf and Brown. |
2B
|
Kyle Seager |
3,900 |
8.0 |
I’m not quite sure why he is going for under 4000 with his numbers. |
3B
|
Evan Longoria |
3,900 |
8.3 |
Like Seager, I’m not quite sure why he is going for less than 4000. |
SS
|
Jean Segura |
4,000 |
8.7 |
He isn’t necessarily elite, but he has settled in at a fair price. |
OF

Shin-Soo Choo |

8.8 |
If he’s not elite, he’s as close as he’s going to get. |
OF

Jayson Werth |
4,200 |
8.8 |
He has been unbelievably hot since the all-star break. |
OF
|
Alfonso Soriano |

Perhaps the numbers themselves justify his move to the Yankees. |
P

Julio Teheran |

He doesn’t get a lot of fanfare, but he is one of the main reasons why the Braves have been dominant. |

Since coming off the DL in July, he is 6-1 with an ERA under 2.00. |
Twitter Question of the Day
One of our fantasy regulars tweeted out a very interesting question the other day and today seemed like a perfect opportunity to address it. He wondered if Roy Halladay was worth stashing on the disabled list. It brings up a very interesting point about disabled lists in general. With the playoffs coming up, players need to look at their disabled list more carefully. Sometimes it’s easy to forget about a guy you have stashed away until you discover one of your guys on the seven day disabled list and nowhere to stash him.
I ran into that problem on a couple of my fantasy rosters when Joe Mauer went on the seven day disabled list. Suddenly, I needed a catcher. Any catcher. I looked at my DL list and saw some guys that hadn’t played in an eternity and with little hope of being a contributor. This is where Halladay comes in. He performed poorly in his last rehab start in A Ball. He will be promoted to AA despite his poor performance. Let’s assume everything goes to plan and he shows enough stamina to move to the next stage. In that case, he won’t make his first appearance back into the big leagues until September. By then, you will either be in the playoffs or your season will be over.
At this point, there are three scenarios that could apply and two of them aren’t good. He could be virtually done and just trying to hang on. However, it is more likely that he will just have to accept pitching with lesser stuff and will have to adjust. Those adjustments will likely not come this year. The last possibility seems more remote by the day. That involves him suddenly and miraculously rediscovering the magic and coming back to dominate in September. I’m not wasting a roster spot gambling on that possibility and you shouldn’t either.
