 Game times and Weather

We have a full schedule of night games, which is always ideal when constructing your daily lineups. We get started on the east coast, with the 7:05 pm EST games. I’m staying away from the Yankees/Tigers game today, as rain looks unavoidable there, so why bother? As of post time, nothing else looks worrisome but as always, check the weather when you’re looking at the starting lineups.

Stacking options

There are so many ways to skin this proverbial Daily Fantasy Sports cat, and a very popular way to construct your DraftKings lineup is by stacking your roster with multiple players from one or two teams. One way to pick your stack is to look at who Draftkings prices as the worst pitcher for the day, and see if the numbers match up. The Royals face Ricky Nolasco and the Twins tonight, but as far as stacks are concerned, nothing jumps off the page for me today. The Rockies typically hit left-handed pitching well, but they’re facing Madison Bumgarner, who’s not your league average lefty. I’m going to lean heavily on the BvP (batter vs. pitcher) data today. Some in the industry think it’s a fool errand to chase BvP data, and I agree that using it independent of anything else, it’s a bad idea. It’s a piece of the puzzle, but today it’ll be a bit bigger of a piece.

Pitchers

Wow what a day on the bump! The options are plentiful today. The price for Alex Cobb ($10,300) finally seems right, after being a tremendous discount for the past few outings. Cobb has the best hard-hit-against rate in the majors since the All-Star break, with just 9.3% of contact-against being classified as hard hit. Johnny Cueto ($11,400) is appealing since the Cubs top hitters haven’t fared well against him in the past, but it’s hard to swing that price with all the options today. Weather keeps us away from Rick Porcello today, but as I mentioned earlier, the Rockies keep me away from Madison Bumgarner ($10,000). Tyson Ross ($9,500), Matt Shoemaker ($8,200) and Jose Quintana ($8,000) are worth a look today, but my other starter today is Alex Wood ($8,200). He gets a Mets team that struggles against left-handed pitching, their .290 wOBA and 87 wRC+ against lefties is the third worst in the league in both categories.

Catcher

Catcher is always one of the places I’ll look save a few bucks. Today we have a couple options, but my first pick is Wilin Rosario ($3,500). Teammate Michael McKenry ($3,400) is a nice sub in Rosario doesn’t start, but he’s likely to play with his success against Bumgarner in previous outings. Also Derrick Norris ($3,600) is worth a look today against left-hander Dallas Keuchel.

First baseman

Jose Abreu ($5,400) is always an option, especially against a lefty, but my pick at first today is Adrian Gonzalez ($3,600). The near $2,000 difference is huge, and Gonzalez flat-out owns Trevor Cahill, slugging .833 against him lifetime.

Second baseman

Very slim picking today at second base, which makes Neil Walker ($4,000) the bell of the ball. If you don’t use the left-handed Walker against Lance Lynn, go dirt cheap and keep it under $3,000 with someone that’s starting.

Third baseman

If you find a discount you like a third, then you can move my third base pick, Kyle Seager ($4,500) to second. Seager is hitting well of late, and Nick Martinez scares no one. The 3-3 lifetime sample size is just a wee-bit small, but again, it’s Nick Martinez, people. Otherwise, Nolan Arenado ($4,600) is the hottest hitter on the planet, so he’s worth riding out, even though his career numbers against MadBum aren’t spectacular.

Shortstop

We’ll listen to what Draftkings is trying to tell us here, and we’ll start a Royals’ position player. Alcides Escobar ($3,900) is our guy at shortstop today. If you’re picking up Rockies, then the discounted Josh Rutledge ($2,700) is your guy.

Outfielder

As is typically the case, we have options galore in the outfield today. More than likely, you have money to spend big here as well. Here’s the kicker though, I’m going to give you one HUGE discount. Scott Hariston ($1,900) is going to be the guinea pig today, putting the BvP data to the test in a big way. We obviously need to see if he starts, but his career numbers against Cole Hamels are solid. In a fairly decent sample size (46 PA’s), Hariston has .386/.426/.841 slash line against Hamels, including five home runs. Watch those lineups. Starlin Marte ($4,700) has been the top fantasy producer over the past two weeks, and he’s a good option today as well. The left over funds from the Scott Hariston experiment will leave you with options like Mike Trout ($5,400), Giancarlo Stanton ($5,700) and Hunter Pence ($4,600).
