2014 Fantasy Baseball: The Fix DL Report – Week Seven
Welcome to the seventh week of the Fix DL Report. Each week I (@Rich_Migs) will cover significant fantasy baseball injuries. As the season continues, the report will address some of the most recent injuries and their fantasy implications.
OUT FOR THE SEASON: Patrick Corbin, Brandon Beachy, Kris Medlen, Jarrod Parker, Cory Luebke, Bruce Rondon, Bobby Parnell, Jameson Taillon, Avisail Garcia, Matt Moore, Maicer Izturis, Ivan Nova, A.J. Griffin
ON THE WAY BACK: Anibal Sanchez (this week/next week), Carlos Quentin (activated), Ryan Braun (activated), Chris Sale (rehab assignment), Jaime Garcia (rehab assignment), Matt Cain (activated)
PLAYERS TO WATCH (Not on DL/DL Updates): Carlos Beltran (elbow), Colby Rasmus (hamstring), Martin Perez (elbow), Rick Porcello (side), Starling Marte (back), Coco Crisp (neck), Omar Infante (back), Jorge De La Rosa (back), Will Middlebrooks (hand), Mark Teixeira (groin), Juan Uribe (hamstring), Michael Saunders (knee)
Beltran, Rasmus, and Perez all could head to the disabled list this week. We will find out more over the next couple of days.
More starters go down and it looks like a young ace may go under the knife. It continues to be a season plagued by injuries.
Here is week six’s DL report. I will be doing my best to avoid too much repetition each week, so be sure to refer back to the past DL reports to keep track of all the injuries. Let’s take a look at some of the key fantasy players on the disabled list this week.
Week Seven:
Pitchers |
Injury |
Expected Return |
Fantasy Implications |
Jose Fernandez (SP) |
Elbow |
Unknown-Out for the Season |
These big time pitcher injuries won’t stop and they are hurting the game of baseball. Losing young star after young star for 12-24 months is really just a shame. And it looks like Jose Fernandez will be the next to have Tommy John surgery. |
C.C. Sabathia (SP) |
Knee |
Unknown |
From one rising ace to one that is fading, Sabathia has hit the DL with fluid in his knee. He is also going to visit Dr. James Andrews about it, so there’s that. The MRI came back clean, so the guess here is Sabathia will be back after missing three to six weeks. |
Sergio Santos (RP) |
Forearm |
Unknown |
Casey Janssen is back and we should expect him to be the closer going forward. Santos has struggled so far this season and it may be related to his strained forearm. Injuries have plagued him in the past, which makes this even worse. |
Others on the DL: Pedro Strop (groin)
Hitters |
Injury |
Expected Return |
Fantasy Implications |
Matt Wieters (C) |
Elbow |
Late May/Early June-Unknown |
This is a tough blow for the Orioles and fantasy owners, as Wieters was putting it together at the plate. He is out with an elbow strain that may require surgery. If Wieters can’t get well over the next few weeks, he will be out for the season after going under the knife. |
Brandon Belt (1B) |
Thumb |
Late June/Early July |
An unlucky situation for Belt, the Giants, and fantasy owners. A broken thumb from a hit by pitch, Belt will be out for six weeks. He is undergoing surgery. |
Donnie Murphy (2B) |
Neck |
Unknown |
Expecting this early of an MLB debut from Rougned Odor is quite surprising, but he’s here and deep leaguers (AL-Only) need to take notice. If he shows well, and so far he has, Odor may continue to start at second even when Murphy comes back. Jurickson Profar will still be out until June or later. |
Adam LaRoche (1B) |
Quad |
Late May/June |
LaRoche was having a nice bounce back season offensively for the Nationals, so this is a bit disappointing. He aggravated the quad more so trying to play through, which could extend his time on the DL. |
Aramis Ramirez (3B) |
Hamstring |
Unknown |
Ramirez strained his hammy and should be back in a few weeks. Mark Reynolds and Lyle Overbay should get some extra at-bats. |
Others on the DL: Ian Stewart (hand)
