Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: April 13, 2013

Leading Off

Daniel Murphy led the Mets over the Twinkies 16-5. Murphy had 4 hits in 5 at-bats and drove in 4 runs. Murphy is now hitting .368/.405/.711 on the young season and he looks primed to add a bit to his power. He’s not going to hit anywhere close to 20 HR, but he could hit 13 or 14 with a great batting average and above average counting stats in an improving Mets lineup. He’s owned in 96.1% of ESPN leagues, so he’s really not available much of anywhere. If he is though, pick him up!

John Buck continues to mash like crazy, and he hit this grand slam off Twins pitcher Pedro Hernandez. Owners should definitely sell high on Buck because there is zero chance this continues.

Denard Span stole another base, bringing his total to 2 on the season, but each one has come during the past two games. He continues to play well and has been validating the sleeper status I gave him in the pre-season. Span has an OBP right now of .467 and is a must own in all fantasy leagues. The Braves downed the Nationals 6-4 in 10 innings.

Hunter Pence stole another base yesterday and now has two on the young season. Pence contributing more than he has in the past two years could be a crucial bump for fantasy owners looking to get a better return on their investment of Pence this season. Kyuji Fujikawa blew a save, giving up two doubles – one to Marco Scutaro, the other to Brandon Belt. He came away with a very fortunate win, as Sergio Romo allowed the game winner in the bottom half of the ninth.

Starling Marte stole a base yesterday, and now has two this season. Marte is hitting  .350/.395/.450 right now. I have been beating the drum on the anti-Marte bandwagon for a while now, as I don’t like young prospects with weak plate approaches (guys that don’t walk and also strike out too much). I still think he’s a sell high candidate. He helped the Pirates eek by the Reds 6-5.

Ryan Howard might be coming out of his long slump to start the season, as he mashed two doubles in Friday’s 3-1 win over the Marlins.

In perhaps the biggest news of the day, Jose Reyes sprained his left ankle in what was a gruesome injury as he slid into second base on a steal. He got up writhing in pain, and was carried off on a cart. His timetable is currently 1-3 months according to GM Alex Anthopolous.

Here are some SS replacements to scrounge the waiver wire for:

For some unknown reason Jean Segura of the Brewers is still owned in ONLY 54.1% of ESPN leagues. That needs to change.

OBP leaguers should take a gander at Padres SS Everth Cabrera he will kill your batting average, but makes up for it in walks (which you care about in an OBP league). He is a great source of steals. He is owned in 73.3% of ESPN leagues.

Maicer Izturis is probably the main beneficiary in Toronto of the Reyes injury, as this should mean he can play every day. He can supply steals and light power and modest batting average.

Draft Kings Daily Lineup

Today I will be playing in the MLB Daily Dollar as always! Here is my lineup

Pitchers: Jon Lester | $9,100: Lester faces a Rays team that really struggles against lefties

Matt Harvey | $9,900: Harvey is red hot and draws the light hitting Minnesota Twins in a favorable ballpark

Catcher: John Buck | $3,000: Still dirt cheap in Daily Fantasy games and he’s on absolute FIRE.

First Base: Chris Davis | $4,100: Like Buck, Davis is on absolute fire, and if he can homer again, he’s a great all or nothing sort of play.

Second Base: Matt Carpenter | $4,000: Carpenter is an excellent choice in points leagues (Daily Fantasy obviously included) because he hits for doubles power, walks, and doesn’t strike-out much.

Third Base: Luis Valbuena | $3,000: OK so I’m kind of punting third base, but Valbuena has been walking a lot and if he can get me an extra base hit, he’s getting me what I’m asking out of him.

Shortstop: Ian Desmond | $4,000: Desmond doesn’t walk, which can be a bit of an annoyance, but his extra base pop makes him a good fantasy play in this format.

Outfielders: Shane Victorino | $4,000: Until his price goes up, I’ll be starting Victorino every day.

Alex Rios: | $4,800: Also white hot; plus he faces one of the weaker righties he’ll face in terms of power stuff, in Zach McAllister.

Denard Span: | $4,000: Same reasoning as Shane Victorino; I’ll be choosing Span most days until his price increases.
