Fantasy Baseball Final: August 19, 2015
Welcome to the TheFantasyFix.com’s nightly fantasy baseball recap, where you’ll find updates on bullpen usage, lineup construction, injuries, and transactions. No matter the format, we got you covered with everything you need to know to help you win your league.
What’s not mentioned below: Khris Davis launched two home runs and drove in five runs for the Milwaukee Brewers in their 8-7 win over the Miami Marlins this afternoon. Ryan Braun also went deep the Brew Crew, while Marcell Ozuna launched his first home run since being called back up to the big leagues over the weekend. San Diego Padres’ third baseman Yangervis Solarte had three hits today, including his ninth home run of the season, in the team’s 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves. Tyson Ross took the no-decision for the Padres, letting up one run over six innings with three walks and five strikeouts. Julio Teheran struck out seven over his six innings, walking one and giving up one run across four hits.
Currently in action: The New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles are currently tied at four heading into the ninth inning. Adam Jones currently has two hits in his three at-bats, including his 23rd home run of the season. Noah Syndergaard let up three runs in his five innings of work for the Mets, striking out six and walking two. The St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants are also currently tied up in their ballgame, 3-3 in the eighth inning. Matt Cain was surprisingly not terrible in his start, allowing two runs across six innings with six strikeouts. One of his mistakes in the game, however, game off the bat of Stephen Piscotty in the second inning, his second home run of the season. The Boston Red Sox tagged Corey Kluber for six runs, and currently lead the Cleveland Indians 6-1 in the eighth inning. David Ortiz, Jackie Bradley Jr, Ryan Hanigan, and Travis Shaw all went deep for the Sox.
IF YOU ONLY READ ONE THING…
The bird is the word! New York Yankees’ rookie first baseman had himself a day today, launching his first and second career home runs, in the team’s 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins, marking this their sixth win in their last seven games. Both home runs were two run blasts, as Bird accounted for the entire Yankees’ offense today as he drove in all four of the team’s runs. Bird was filling in for the injured Mark Teixeira, who is battling a right leg injury that could send him to the disabled list. Tex’s 31 home runs on the season lead the team, and if he does go on the DL, the Bronx Bombers are going to need Bird to continue to produce like he did this afternoon to fill the void in the lineup. Nathan Eovaldi continued his upward trend this afternoon, letting up three runs across seven innings of work with eight strikeouts. Eovaldi improves to 13-2 on the season (8-0 in 11 starts since June 20th), and owns a 3.48 ERA since the All-Star break. Twins’ starter Ervin Santana was responsible for all four Yankees’ runs in his 7.2 innings of work, striking out six while walking two. Joe Mauer plated two runs in the team’s loss, while Dellin Betances shut the door for the Yanks in the ninth for his eighth save of the season.
JUST AS WE EXPECTED…
Derek Holland looked sharp in his return to the mound this afternoon for the Texas Rangers, striking out six over 6.1 innings while letting up two runs in the team’s 7-2 win over the Seattle Mariners. It was Holland’s first start since early April after spending the past few months on the shelf with a shoulder injury, and the hope for the Rangers is that he can get through the rest of the season without any setbacks and eventually front the 2016 rotation with Cole Hamels and Yu Darvish. The addition of Holland to the rotation also helps the team in the playoff race, as they sit just 3.5 games back of the AL West leading Houston Astros. Mitch Moreland drove in three runs for the Rangers, including his 18th home run of the season in the seventh inning. Elvis Andrus and Mike Napoli also went deep for the Rangers, providing Holland with more than enough run support to pick up his first win of 2015. Mike Montgomery was pegged with the loss for the Mariners, lasting six innings, giving up three runs while walking four and striking our three.
BUT WE DIDN’T SEE THIS COMING…
The Oakland A’s completed their two game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers today, beating the team 5-2 behind Jesse Chavez’s eight solid innings of work. Chavez gave up just two hits on the day, one being a home run off the bat of Jimmy Rollins, to go along with six strikeouts and two walks. Rookie outfielder Billy Burns had himself a nice day at the plate for the A’s, going 3-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Alex Wood took the loss for the Dodgers, lasting 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on five hits, walking three and striking out just one batter. With the loss, the Dodgers are just a game and a half up on the San Francisco Giants, who are currently playing the St. Louis Cardinals as I type this. Things are really starting to get interesting in the wide-open NL West, with the defending World Series Champs making a late August push for first place.

Rumors & Transactions
After days of conflicting reports, Phillies’ second baseman Chase Utley is finally on the move, as he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two prospects, Jon Heyman of CBSsports.com reported today. The Dodgers were one of many teams that were linked to Utley, as second baseman Howie Kendrick is still nursing his hamstring injury and shouldn’t be back for at least another two weeks. The deal reunites Utley with his former double play partner, current Dodgers’ shortstop Jimmy Rollins. Utley struggled mightily for most of the season, but since being activated from the disabled list, Utley is slashing an absurd .484/.485/.742 across 31 plate appearances. The sample size there is obviously small, but this may suggest that the 36 year old is finally healthy after an ankle injury that was nagging him for most of this season. The Phillies are sending $4M to the Dodgers to cover most of the remaining $5.85M that the veteran infielder is owed.
