Fantasy Baseball Final: May 2nd, 2015
If you only read one thing…
There’s not much left to say about Nelson Cruz at this point. He is hitting everything right now, hitting for average and for power at his new home, Safeco Field. HOWEVER, I put Nelson Cruz in the sell high category as of today, because I believe there is someone out there that is probably panicking over the fact that Andrew McCutchen is off too a slow start or that they’re worried about Carlos Gomez’s hamstring. My belief on Nelson Cruz is that, even though he’s on pace for, like, a billion home runs and RBI this season, is that he will slow way own and start hitting like he is ranked in the mid-forties of all ESPN standard leagues. Like I said before, with Cruz dominating all aspects of hitting right now, the time to sell WAY high is now, and I believe that it would be worth it to see if you could snag a top 10-20 player in exchange.
Just as we expected…
Carlos Gomez returned to the Brewers lineup on Saturday, just as they had said all week. He was running on the treadmill at full speed earlier in the week, and the Brewers said that he would make his return on Saturday. He stole two bases in the process, and went 1/3 with a run scored. He left the game early, but that was all part of their plan to ease him back in to a full nine innings of work.
But we didn’t see this coming…
Coming in to Saturday’s start, Gio Gonzalez had a 5.01 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP in four starts for the Nationals this season. He was on the road to take on Jonathon Niese and the mighty New York Mets. The main concern for Gio coming in to this game was his control issues, even in his two quality starts of the season. His first start of the year against the Phillies he went 6.1 innings and gave up three earned runs, but he gave up five hits and walked four. In the only scoreless outing of the season against the Cardinals, he gave up eight hits and walked four in six innings of work. He’s had trouble keeping people off base, so to allow a combination of 7 hits and walks on Saturday, while striking out nine and allowing 0 runs, was definitely a good thing for fantasy owners.
Save Chances…
Dellin Betances pitched 1.1 innings, striking out every hitter that he faced to earn a four out save against the Red Sox, Saturday. We all know that Betances has overpowering stuff, much like Aroldis Chapman in Cincy, so this doesn’t come as much of a surprise. However, it’s nice to see him earn his first save of the season, which might be a sign to things to come if he continues this dominance.
Chris Hatcher of the Los Angeles Dodgers was rewarded the save on Saturday in a wacky rule even though the Dodgers won 8-3.
Brad Brach earned the save for the Orioles on Saturday. Again, another scenario where it wasn’t a save situation being up four runs, but was still rewarded the save because of the situation when he entered the game.
Casilla, Perkins, Storen, and Kimbrel also earned saves.
Injuries…
The major injuries APPEAR (knock on wood) to be slowing down, and people have begun to come off of the disabled list. Carlos Gomez returned to the Brewers lineup Saturday, and it looks like Greg Holland will be activated possibly on Tuesday from the Royals DL
Yasiel Puig is hoping to begin a rehab stint soon, which would also allow him to return when he is eligible to come off of the disabled list in the next few days.
