What’s not mentioned below: Tonight’s Maryland matchup between the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles was postponed due to rain; the makeup date for the game is Thursday afternoon at 4:05PM. Xander Bogaerts launched a grand slam in the eighth inning to life the Boston Red Sox over the Tampa Bay Rays, 8-7. Dustin Pedroia collected three hits for the Sox in the win. Chris Archer left after just five innings, tallying 99 pitches thanks in part to five walks that he issued. Jorge Soler smacked a pinch-hit three run home run in the seventh inning to help pad the Cubs’ lead over the Brewers, as they ultimately won the game 9-5. Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo both collected three hits for the Cubs in the team’s victory. Starling Marte hit his 18th home run of the season in the Pirates’ 9-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. A.J. Burnett got the win for the Bucs, as he gave up two runs over 5.2 innings of work, walking four and striking out five.
IF YOU ONLY READ ONE THING…
Dallas Keuchel improved to 18-8 on the season in the Houston Astros’ 6-3 win over the Atlanta Braves tonight, bouncing back from his last start against the Rangers in which he gave up nine earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. Tonight, however, Keuchel gave up just one run over 7.2 innings, walking just one batter and striking out six. The CY Young candidate needed to have a start like this if he wanted to stay in the contention for the award, and the southpaw delivered. Keuchel was backed with six runs from his offense, including home runs from Evan Gattis and Carlos Correa. Correa went 3-4 for the Astros batting in the three spot, driving in three runs and bringing his average up to .279. Gattis’ home run was his 26th on the year, though that was the only hit he collected in the game. Jared Weaver took the loss for the Angels’, allowing five runs over 5.2 innings, scattering nine hits and striking out five; his ERA sits at 4.86 on the season. With the win, the Astros now sit a game back in the AL West, while the Angels sit 4.5 games back.
JUST AS WE EXPECTED…
The New York Mets cruised to victory tonight behind starting pitcher Jonathon Niese, beating the Atlanta Braves 4-0 at home. Niese tossed six scoreless innings in the win, giving up three this and striking out two. Rookie outfielder Michael Conforto launched his eighth home run in the win, while Yoenis Cespedes went 3-4, raising his average to .293 on the year. Shelby Miller lost his 23rd straight start, falling to 5-16 on the year after giving up two runs over six innings of work. Miller leads the National League in both shutouts and losses, which gives you an indicator on the bad luck he’s been having all year; Miller’s ERA sits at an even 3.00 on the season. The Mets seem well on their way to the division title this season, as they sit 6.5 games in front of the Washington Nationals. The team does have some concerns heading into the postseason, however, particularly with starting pitcher Matt Harvey.
David Price and the Toronto Blue Jays topped the division rival New York Yankees tonight at home, increasing their lead in the AL East to 3.5 games. David Price went seven strong innings for the Jays, allowing just three base runners (two hits, one walk), while striking out seven. Price sits at 17-5 on the season, sporting a 2.34 ERA to go along with 219 strikeouts in 215.1 innings. The Jays played three runs in the first inning off Yankees’ starter Adam Warren, who only lasted 3.1 innings in the game. Jose Bautista opened up the scoring in the game with an RBI single, one of his two hits in his four trips to the plate. The Yankees threatened in the late innings of the game, though they failed to come back and tie the game up. Rookie first baseman Greg Bird hit his 9th home run of the season in the loss for the Yankees, hitting it in the ninth inning off Blue Jays’ closer Roberto Osuna. Besides that blip in the road, Osuna was able to shut down the Yankees and notch his 17th save on the year.
BUT WE DIDN’T SEE THIS COMING…
Jeff Samardzija spun an absolute gem for the Chicago White Sox this afternoon against the Detroit Tigers in the first game of the day/night doubleheader, tossing a complete game shutout to earn him his 10th win of the season. There is no doubt that this season has been a disaster for Samardzija as he prepares for free agency, but starts like these can only help his chances of earning the big contract he wants this winter. Though he obviously won’t get the payday he would have gotten had he been a free agent last offseason, teams with a need for rotation help will surely be lining up for the right-hander’s services. This afternoon, “the Shark” gave up just one hit in his nine innings of work, walking zero and striking out six batters. Samardzija was in complete control from the start, as it took the former Notre Dame wide receiver just 88 pitches to collect 27 outs. Samardzija was the complete opposite in his start prior to this one, as he gave up ten runs in just three innings of work against Oakland. Nonetheless, this was an encouraging start for him and his camp as they prepare for the offseason ahead. Chicago second basemen Carlos Sanchez led the offense for the team today, as he went 3-3 with his fifth home run of the season, while also scoring both of the team’s runs on the afternoon. Kyle Ryan was solid for the Tigers on the mound, giving up two runs over seven innings with two strikeouts, though it ultimately didn’t matter since the offense was non-existent in the ballgame. What a disappointing season it has been for these two teams, as they both came into the season looking to make some noise in the AL Central, though now they’re bottom feeders in the division.
