Stars on the Shelf: TheFantasyFix.com’s Week 11 DL Report
Here is TheFantasyFix.com’s week eleven update on all notable injured players, right here in one spot. Here you will find an update on a player’s progress as well as my spin on their expected return dates and fantasy impact upon return. The players are listed by expected return date.
The big addition this week is Pablo Sandoval. Sandoval should only miss the minimum 15 days but he is a big bat missing for fantasy lineups and of course the Giants. Ryan Braun could hit the DL too, but he hasn’t yet.
NEW ON THE SHELF: Pablo Sandoval, Angel Pagan, Alexi Ogando
KEEP EYE ON: Ryan Braun, Yoenis Cespedes, Coco Crisp
BACK IN ACTION: Giancarlo Stanton, Stephen Strasburg, Johnny Cueto, Huston Street, Shane Victorino
PLAYER | EXPECTED RETURN DATE | LATEST UPDATE |
---|---|---|
Austin Jackson | 6/15/2013 | AJax’s has gone 1-8 so far in his rehab games and he feels ready to go. Leyland on the other hand says he doesn’t care how AJax feels physically, but that he needs to be ready to hit. I figure he should be back this weekend but Leyland loves reminding people who’s in charge. Clubhouse attendants sweeping up Pall Mall butts in the dugout hallways after games can relate. |
Chris Perez | 6/17/2013 | Perez has already been throwing off of the mound with no problems and could return next week if all goes well on a rehab assignment, and by rehab assignment I do mean pitching. |
Ian Kinsler | 6/17/2013 | Kinsler is feeling better and participating in full baseball activities without any issue. He will hit in a rehab game today and then play in the field tomorrow (at second base). He could be back this weekend or they can let him get a few reps and wait until Monday which is my guess since they have Profar in there. |
Brandon Beachy | 6/18/2013 | Beachy is set to pitch for the Braves in one of the double-header games on the 18th. It’s undetermined how deep they will let him go in the game (assuming he pitches well) but this is great for stashers who initially expected him back around the All Star Game. |
Mitch Moreland | 6/21/2013 | Moreland has been doing some running and claims he feels really good. He is confident he can return when he is first able to be taken off the DL on 6/21. I don’t see any reason why this wouldn’t be the case unless he reinjures it. |
Aaron Hill | 6/21/2013 | Hill was teeing off in batting practice and is geared to go on a rehab assignment at Triple-A this weekend. Assuming all goes well and the hand feels good, he could be back in a week. |
Pablo Sandoval | 6/23/2013 | Bruce Bocky full expects Panda to return when he is eligible, by Sunday the 23rd. Sandoval is out with a foot strain. The Giants could use his bat back as they have been struggling to score runs of late. |
JJ Putz | 6/28/2013 | Putz should be heading to Triple-A Monday for a rehab appearance. It’s an elbow injury he’s recovering from so he’ll likely need at least three reps with time off in between to see how he responds. I think end of June could happen for him, but being an elbow injury, this could turn into a disaster quickly, even after he returns. So Heath Bell owners, keep your hair-triggers off the drop button. |
Jose Reyes | 6/28/2013 | Reyes is doing full activity in simulated situations, and if he checks out there he can go on a rehab assignment. The Blue Jays are in the basement of the AL East, may be sellers at the break, and are going nowhere this year so they will certainly not rush the oft-injured SS back. End of June is realistic, but what’s also realistic is this not being Reyes’ last vacation on the DL this season. |
David Price | 6/30/2013 | If all goes well in a simulated game today for Price, he will hit the rehab road for three games which when spread out would have him coming back for the start of July. Hopefully the time off, rest, and rehab starts helps Price find his form from last year for fantasy owners. |
Bryce Harper | 6/30/2013 | After visiting Dr. James Andrews, Harper accepted the decision for a cortisone shot in his knee. He is now in a brace until Monday or Tuesday. Best case scenario is the end of June for his return. Hopefully he goes right back to being the speedy aggressive player he was before, but stays away from walls and injuries this time. |
Angel Pagan | 6/30/2013 | Pagan, out with a strained hamstring was eligible to return this weekend, but he hasn’t done any sort of running yet so it looks like he is still possible two weeks or so away from return on a best case scenario. I am guessing end of this month. |
Rafael Betancourt | 7/1/2013 | Betancourt himself has said he realistically wont return until the end of the month. When a player admits that on their own that means its legit and likely even longer than that. Brothers gets the saves chances while he is out, which could be into July the way it sounds right now. |
Carl Crawford | 7/1/2013 | Did you see that pig fly by? I was right on point with this one so far. the Dodgers initial diagnosis was a mere 15 day stint, but Don Mattingly now has stated that the strain on Crawford’s hamstring is “significant”. On June 6th they changed it to 3 weeks which has him at the end of June. I am sticking to beginning of July, and not very optimistic about it. He hasn’t earned that with his injury track record. |
Asdrubal Cabrera | 7/1/2013 | According to paul hoynes, @hoynsie on 6/11, he spoke to Terry Francona who said Cabrera is “doing good” in his rehab but that he is still ways away. Initially they said 3-4 weeks. early July is still a possible return date for him. |
Michael Pineda | 7/1/2013 | Pineda did well in his first rehab start with class-A, topping off at 95 mph on his fastball. His second rehab start is tonight (Friday) which will actually be a simulated game. He didn’t have a setback or anything its just merely due to scheduling issues and them wanting to keep him on a regiment. He could rejoin the Yanks at the start of July and if you saw the way Phil Hughes threw the other night in Oakland and of late, they will probably love to have him with the big team, whether they’d admit that or not. |
Brandon Morrow | 7/5/2013 | Morrow’s recover/rehab from his forearm injury has been very slow. He wont return for “at least 2-3 weeks” according to the team. Morrow has been terrible this year. If all goes well after a few rehab appearances he could return before the All Star Break. But like with several players on the list here, if you are relying on Brandon Morrow for your fantasy team, you have bigger fish to fry. |
Curtis Granderson | 7/5/2013 | Granderson has been playing catch down in Tampa, but no updates on anything regarding hitting or fielding. He is probably a few weeks away still. The Yanks will get him out there as soon as he’s ready. 1) because they need the offense badly, and 2) he needs to start putting up some numbers for team and personal purposes. It is likely Granderson’s final year with the Yankees as he hits free agency after the season, so he will want to do some damage with the bat to get the best contract possible. He should pay off nicely for patient owners upon his return. |
Matt Kemp | 7/12/2013 | Kemp had a setback on 6/9 that halted his running rehab. He is swinging a bat but obviously if they stopped his running drills he is a ways off. There is no timetable for his return, it will all come down to when he feels no soreness/pain and can begin running again. My best guesstimate is three weeks. Even when Kemp does come back, there are a lot of doubts that we wont be seeing “Beast Mode” Kemp again this season. A lot of people are saying sell his name in a re-draft league if you still can, and I am starting to lean their way on that. |
Chase Utley | 7/16/2013 | I was dead wrong on Utley. I called out the Phillies as dreamers that he could be back mid-month but it appears it will happen barring an incidents. Utley is set to hit a quick rehab game and could be back early next week with the Phillies. I am eating crow, but hey, can you blame me? Utley has been an injury stalwart for the last four seasons. It’s always fun to watch a healthy Utley play though, so cheers to that. |
Brett Lawrie | 7/17/2013 | Lawrie is shut down and in a walking boot. His high ankle sprain appears to be of the most severe variety. There is no timetable for his return. You would have to imagine best case scenario at this point is around the All Star Game consideirng he would need to get out of the boot and start doing basic movement drills, then running, batting practice, rehab games. Best case in my eyes is a month, but I am not e genie or a doctor. What I do know are facts, and the facts are that he has absolutely been awful this year when he was playing. Certainly on “team bust” for 2013. |
Adam Eaton | 7/17/2013 | Dr. Doom (James Andrews) actually gave Eaton good news in that he doesn’t need elbow surgery. However, he has not been cleared for activity, so there is no timetable for a return. Maybe a first half shut down and All Star Break reboot here. |
Corey Hart | 7/17/2013 | according to Tom Haudricourt, @haudricourt: “#Brewers GM Doug Melvin said on his WTMJ Radio show this morning that Corey Hart might not be back until after all-star break.” Hart was a late round value flyer in most leagues so I can’t say he is on the “team BUST” roster, but unless he does serious damage through August and fantasy playoffs, stashing him was a lost cause. |
Colby Lewis | 7/17/2013 | Lewis, on the 60 Day DL, has played pain free catch for three consecutive days. The next step would be half-mound, or mound, and then bullpen sessions, and ultimately a simulated game or rehab assignment. My guess is after the All Star Break. |
Alex Rodriguez | 7/17/2013 | Most ARod updates have to do with this biogenesis scandal but as recent as this week he has been taking BP (hitting to all fields, some over the fence), fielding ground balls from his knees and normally (without making throws). Girardi still said he is a post-All Star Break return, so this doesn’t speed or slow anything down. Stash if you must, like if you have Michael Young as your starting 3B for example. But who knows what this guy is going to give when he returns. |
Ryan Vogelsong | 7/22/2013 | Vogelsong was transferred to the 60 Day DL and isn’t expected to return from his broken hand until after the All Star Game. The Giants could use him now, as rumors are they are shopping for starting pitching, especially with the floundering performances by former Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum. |
Jake Peavy | 7/23/2013 | Track record goes a long way. Siding on the long end of the initial 4-6 week return timeframe was the way to go for Peavy as the White Sox are not admitting he wont be back until after the break. Late July for Peavy at best. Owners should be satisfied with what they have gotten from him so far, considering his injury history. Jake can be a top notch starter when he’s healthy, but there-in lies the rub. |
Derek Jeter | 8/1/2013 | Jeter is supposed to get an update on his ankle 6/13, results have not come out. But if he is cleared to resume full baseball activities the timetable for his return will be set, and likely set at late July. I am sticking with my initial date of August 1, and I recently heard Sweeny Murti of WFAN in NY say the same thing. The Yankees will take their time bringing Derek back after early spring training set backs occurred when he allegedly rushed his way back. |
Daniel Hudson | OUT FOR SEASON | Hudson re-tore his UCL on 6/4 and must have a second Tonny John Surgery. One rehab start in from a full year of surgery, rest, and rehab and he is back to square one. This is simply awful, and I hope Huddy a fast and healthy return back to the mound in 2014. Follow him on twitter, he’s great on there. |
Alexi Ogando | UNKNOWN | Ogando made just one start after being gone for almost a month with his biceps injury and he is back on the list, this time for his shoulder. There is no timetable for his return but my guess is you can pencil him in for another three weeks at this point. |
Brett Anderson | UNKNOWN | Anderson is having his foot evaluated tomorrow (6/14) to see where he stands in terms of a potential return to pitching. The A’s are doing just fine without him, winning their 40th game of the season and holding on to first place in the AL West so there appears to be no rush to bring him back sooner than necessary. Until the foot evaluation comes in, a return date is impossible to determine. |
Chris Carpenter | UNKNOWN | The Cardinals have stated they are taking it as slow as possible with him, especially considering if they got one inning from him it would be more than initially expected this season. He could be back aroudn the All Star Break, in what role I am not sure. It could very well be bullpen, especially for the post-season, where he could certainly help out in a Jason Motte-less pen. |
Ryan Braun | UNKNOWN – DL Possible | Braun has been sitting out with a thumb-injury, one significant enough to contribute to him altering his swing to subside the pain. He hasn’t homered in about 70 at-bats and a DL stint is certainly possible. Keep your eye on this. |
Josh Beckett | UNKNOWN – OUT INDEFINITELY | Beckett could be suspended for being a player on the DL that came onto the field in the brawl with the Dbacks this week. An idiotic move by a player who has a hard time staying on the field during non-contact situations. He could need season ending surgery on his elbow regardless of that. Beckett is not a fantasy asset anymore for 2013, and possibly ever again. Drop away folks, unless you want to stash on the DL and hope. |
Cory Luebke | UNKNOWN – OUT INDEFINITELY | Sorry stashers, but Bud Black said that after a series of setbacks since Spring Training,Luebke may not pitch at all this season. They are still saying possibly mid-August, but its doubtful. If you need the spot for another player you can definitely can Luebke to the waiver wire. |
Ryan Madson | UNKNOWN – OUT INDEFINITELY | The Angels will wait out another week or so to do one of two things, go for my tests or shut Madson down. I think his season is toast. 12 teams or less mixed leagues can drop him without thinking twice. His prognosis has not improved once all season. All setbacks. |
Roy Halladay | UNKNOWN – OUT INDEFINITELY | Halladay’s on the 60-day DL. He could be back for the last month of the season, but thats impossible to determine until he starts some form of throwing after he rehabs post-surgery. Based on how he has pitched this year, his age, and the surgery, his fantasy value for this season is very low. |
