2014 Fantasy Football: Jarvis Landry in PPR, Standard, and Daily Leagues
After catching four passes in three consecutive games, Jarvis Landry has popped up on the radar of most PPR leagues and is approaching ownable status in standard formats. The 6”0 rookie has supplanted Brandon Gibson as the team’s primary slot receiver, and on a team with a deep ball challenged quarterback that is a valuable and consistent source of catches.
With Ryan Tannehill as the team’s signal caller, a player who primarily runs intermediate routes should see substantial targets while on the field. Currently Landry looks like he is third in line for targets behind Mike Wallace and Charles Clay, but with the offense of the Dolphins in general looking more competent than earlier in the season, I am a fan of Landry going forward.
His athleticism and talent are real. The Dolphins drafted him in the second round and after a one target the first game, he has received at least four targets every week. He is becoming more of a focal point of a chain moving offense.
Another boost to his fantasy value, especially in daily leagues, is that he currently is second in the league in kick return average and has a long of 74. He has 15 kick returns and 11 punt returns this season, so there is always the possibility that he bursts one for a touchdown and adds six essential free points to your roster. This is obviously true for both regular leagues and daily formats, but in daily formats at a very cheap price he could help out by taking one to the house. An interesting idea this week is stacking the Dolphins defense against the Jaguars with Landry, so that if he does actually return one you would get double points for one play.
Going forward I expect Landry to provide more value as the Dolphins continue to focus on their running game and short passing game. Earlier in the season it looked like the team was going to attempt to stretch out the field and run an up tempo offense, but with the emergence of Lamar Miller and Tannehill’s success on the short and intermediate routes compared to deep balls, it looks like Landry is a guy the Dolphins want to get heavily involved in the offense as soon as they can.
More than anything, Landry is a must-add in 12-team PPR leagues. In half-PPR leagues I would be adding him too, and if I was receiver strapped in a standard format I would consider stashing him for bye weeks. I am running with him in a daily GPP this week along with the Dolphins defense in the stack I previously mentioned, but at absolute worst Landry should be a guy that is on your radar.
