2015 Fantasy Football: All-Overrated Team
It’s still early but rankings are in and ADP’s (average draft position) are being calculated. In this article I’ll be putting together a team full of players that are being overvalued and over drafted. I have tallied rankings and ADPs from a large sample size of prominent and respected fantasy sites.
QB1 Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
Romo is generally being drafted and ranked as a low-end QB1 in 12-team leagues. There are a number of issues I have with this. One, Romo is coming off an MVP caliber season and only finished 2014 as the No. 11 fantasy quarterback. It’s unlikely he has a better season in 2015 than he did last year. He lost DeMarco Murray, who took a ton of pressure off Romo, and the Cowboys made minimal effort to replace him. The team still plans to deploy a heavy run attack with a lackluster committee.
Also, Dez Bryant is threatening to sit out regular season games and at best will probably be disgruntled. His most trusted target Jason Witten will be another year older and will likely continue to decline at the age of 33. On top of all that, Romo is still a 35-year-old quarterback with a history of serious back issues. Pass on Romo this season, he’s not worth the price tag.
RB1 C.J. Spiller, New Orleans Saints
I have been quite vocal with my disdain for Spiller’s over-inflated draft stock this season. He is being drafted as a low-end RB2 and is being ranked as the RB20 for the most part. Spiller has been nothing but disappointing despite a few big games in one season three years ago. He couldn’t beat out Fred Jackson in Buffalo and has struggled to stay healthy. People are projecting him to be some sort of PPR star, however, people fail to realize that he’s not a good pass-catcher. His brightest moments came on carries when he was able to get around the corner. He is too frail to be slammed between the tackles and struggles as a receiver. His hands are subpar and his route running is worse. Do not draft Spiller in hopes of getting another Darren Sproles. All you’ll be getting is another C.J. Spiller.
RB2 Jonathan Stewart, Carolina Panthers
Stewart is pretty much right there with Spiller as a low-end RB2 in 10-team leagues. First and foremost, he hasn’t stayed healthy in four years. Over the past three seasons he’s missed 20 games. He hasn’t rushed for 810 yards or five TDs since 2009. What in the world is making people think that this guy is about to make some sort of major comeback? It’s not like he has a ton of PPR value either; he only caught more than 25 passes once in his entire career. If you want to draft a Panthers’ running back, grab Cameron Artis-Payne about 90 picks later. He’s a much better value pick.
WR1 Emmanuel Sanders, Denver Broncos
Sanders is coming off a monster season and has a ton of talent. Still, he’s being ranked right around the WR15 slot. My problem here is that Peyton Manning is visibly declining and the Broncos have made it clear they’re transitioning to a more run oriented offense this season. Of all the people on this team, Sanders has the highest potential to make me look dumb. Nonetheless, I expect him to see a major fall in fantasy production in 2015. As a matter of fact I pretty much expect everyone on the Denver offense to take a big step back.
WR2 Sammy Watkins, Buffalo Bills
Watkins is in a really bad situation this season. Drafting him as a mid-level WR2 could be a disaster. Not only is he coming off offseason hip surgery but his team isn’t doing him any favors. The Bills acquired LeSean McCoy and Rex Ryan has made it clear they want to run the ball about 40 times a game, and knowing Ryan, that’s probably only a slight exaggeration.
On the off chance the Bills do decide to throw the ball, their quarterbacks may be the worst in the league. Matt Cassel is the expected starter and his weaknesses neutralize Watkin’s greatest strength. If E.J. Manuel wins the job, he may struggle to get Watkins the ball deep or short. With so few passes to go around, Buffalo has a lot of mouths to feed. They added Percy Harvin, Charles Clay and McCoy, while F-Jax and Robert Woods will likely still play a significant role. Things don’t look good for Watkins or any of the Bills’ receivers.
WR3 Amari Cooper, Oakland Raiders
I really like Cooper and think he’ll be a star in the future. The Raiders just aren’t there yet. If you could grab him as a flex option, I love it. However, he’s being ranked as a WR3 and drafted as a WR2. That’s just way too high. Also, as much as I trust my ability to evaluate talent, the fact that the Raiders picked him does spook me a bit. Derek Carr and Cooper will grow into a solid duo, I just think it’s going to take some time for the young pair to develop.
TE1 Josh Hill, New Orleans Saints
Zach Ertz scares me too but Hill confuses me more. He’s being drafted as a TE1. Do people really believe that he can just step in and do what Jimmy Graham did? Very few TEs in the history of the league have put up the numbers Graham has. Not only that, Drew Brees is declining and the Saints are another team transitioning to a run-heavy offense. Hill is completely unproven, and it’s very dangerous to just draft him as your top TE and expect him to produce even remotely close Graham. If you want to roll the dice on a guy with 20 career receptions as your starter, you’re a bigger risk taker than me.
